Mobilize Duo – Renault has revealed the production version of the Mobilize Bento and Duo, both electric quadricycles conceived along the same lines as the Citroen Ami. Aimed at retail and business customers, the Duo and Bento were public revealed at the Paris motor show. The Duo is a two-seater quadricycle that will rival the Citroen Ami, which means it can be driven without a driving licence (depending on local regulations)

Its unlikely we will see this type of vehicle here in Australia, yet the practical applications should demand the EV Friendly government at least looks at them.

Mobilize Duo practicality.

The Bento is a micro van which swaps the rear passenger seat for a 649-litre cargo box suitable for carrying small items and equipment. Since it is technically a van, the Bento does require a licence.

They both offer a central driving position with compact dimensions (2.43m and 2.54m respectively) which should make them easy to park and manoeuvre in the busy cities for which they are intended. For instance, it has a turning circle of 6.80m – tighter than a London cab.

Customers will be able to choose from two variants of the Duo: a 45 Neo and an 80 Evo, each homologated to the L6e and L7e quadricycle regulations. The former is limited to 28mph, while the latter can do 50mph.

EV Power

Both make use of a 10.3kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery. Which is good for a range of up to 100 miles for the Duo. And 92 miles for the Bento. This is combined with a 48V electric motor from the Renault Austral mild-hybrid.

The battery takes 3hr 50min to charge from 20-80% on an AC connection. and 3hr 25min on DC. Suggesting the Duo peaks at around 3kW. Renault did not disclose the Duo or Bento’s maximum charging rates.

Renault has also yet to disclose a power figure for the 48V motor but claims that it provides “strong acceleration” up to town speeds. L6e quadricycles are legally limited to 8bhp. While their L7e counterparts can be boosted up to 21bhp. The L7e Microlino’s single motor puts out 17bhp, for reference.

Mobilize Duo interior.

It has also been claimed that the Duo and Bento have been built with comfort as a priority. Inside, it gets a heated driver’s seat and windscreen in winter, as well as manual air conditioning for summer.

The car’s interior is said to have been styled to look like a boombox. With a largely squared-off dashboard and controls that are deliberately basic so that different people can drive the vehicle without any issues. There is also a transducer installed on the dashboard. Which is said to transform the interior into a “giant loudspeaker.”

Chassis development

Its chassis has also been tweaked for comfort. With wide tracks supposedly allowing Renault to position the shock absorbers for “exceptional ride comfort” when travelling over speed bumps and potholes.

Benjamin Manceau, product leader for the Duo and Bento said. “For young apprentices or students far from public transportation, Duo is a true tool of independence. Its generous range and the need for fewer charges mean that students can enjoy their journeys without worrying about running out of power.”

Mobilize Duo sustainable production.

The cars are also produced with an eye on sustainability. The main body parts, for example the bumpers, wings, and wheel arches. Are made of 60% recycled polymers sourced from cars which were about to be scrapped. Renault claims that at the end of its life, the Duo will be “at least 95% recyclable”.

What’s more, Renault says it has gone to considerable efforts to limit the number of parts and components used in the Duo. For example, the front and rear bumpers are identical. Which helps to contribute to it using five times fewer parts than a conventional car.

Pricing for Europe

Prices for the L6 version will start at €9990 (excluding incentives) in France. Indicating that it will cost from around £10,000 in the UK. The L7 version is priced from €11,600 in France. With Evo trim adding Bluetooth, a heated seat and orange accents for €900. The Bento, meanwhile, is priced at €10,900 in France (excluding VAT).

Charge@Large – A new app is set to improve EV charging by providing drivers with real-time availability, while collecting crucial data to improve access and reliability, according to the Electric Vehicle Council.

The EVC is launching ‘Charge@Large’ today. A free app that gives instant visibility on charger status – whether it’s operational, in use by another driver, or out of order.

This real-world information will regularly be shared with governments to improve the EV charging network. Allowing them to pinpoint high-demand areas, and help address outages to improve reliability.

Huge potential

Electric Vehicle Council Chief Executive Julie Delvecchio said the app has huge potential. And over time can serve as a single source of truth for EV drivers navigating Australia’s growing charging network.

“With more than 300,000 electric vehicles on Australian roads and counting. The demand for accessible, reliable EV charging has never been greater,” Ms Delvecchio said.

“The number of public EV chargers and locations across Australia continues to expand. Nearly doubling in the last year alone for all charger types to over 8,100 public stations across 3,800 sites. But drivers need to know that the charger they’re about to use is unoccupied and working. It can be inconvenient to arrive at a charger that is out of order or already being used by someone who has just plugged in.

“The ‘Charge@Large’ app tackles multiple challenges. First, it helps reduce range-anxiety and improves EV driving experience by giving motorists real-time charger availability. Second, by sharing uptime and usage trends with government. It will lead to improvements in EV charger coverage and reliability.

“Governments that sign up will be able to find out the exact areas with high charger demand and outages. So they can support the expansion of coverage and be aware of maintenance issues.

“There are a range of EV apps out there – some offer real-time availability but are limited to specific charge point operators. While others display availability across different brands but are static and lack live updates. ‘Charge@Large’ delivers real-time charger status updates across all participating charge point operators nationwide. What also sets our app apart is its ability to give these insights a second life. By sharing it with governments to support charging network improvements.”

Charge@Large partners

Exploren, ChargeN’Go, Wevolt, Charge Hub and Sonic Charge are onboard ‘Charge@Large’ from launch. And CasaCharge and Charge Post are soon to join. The EVC continues to onboard more operators with confidential discussions ongoing. Similarly, data will initially be shared with the NSW and Western Australia governments. With discussions ongoing to engage with others.

The platform is in line to represent over 1,600 charge points across approximately 740 different sites in all states and territories. With many hundreds more expected to be live within weeks. Charge@Large has been financially supported by the NSW and Western Australian governments.

NSW Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe said the NSW Government welcomes this new app and the data it will provide. “This free resource will make driving an EV more convenient and accessible than ever. EV drivers will have access to the information they need so they can recharge when required, with confidence.”

Matt De Propertis, Founder of ChargePost said “ChargePost is excited and delighted to support Charge@Large. Motorists deserve real-time updates on available charge points. Maintaining our network to the highest possible standards is one of our primary drivers.”

Scan the QR code attached to download the app.

Kerbside Chargers – The Electric Vehicle Council has welcomed the allocation of new federal government funding that will see hundreds of new kerbside chargers installed in Australia.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced $2.4 million for EVX Australia to install 250 kerbside chargers providing 500 charge points, across metropolitan and regional areas in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.

Electric Vehicle Council chief executive Julie Delvecchio said: “It’s exciting to see the federal government allocate additional funding to expand essential EV infrastructure.”

Investing in and expanding Australia’s electric vehicle Kerbside Chargers network is crucial in accelerating the shift to EVs for three reasons:

Reducing range anxiety, making EV travel more convenient and reliable

Supporting the growing number of EV drivers, which has reached 300,000

Making it easier for even more drivers to choose EVs, helping them cut costs while creating cleaner, quieter streets.

“While most EV drivers primarily charge at home, Kerbside Chargers remain essential, especially for those long road trips, to provide confidence to travel further and stay longer at destinations. We also know that it’s tougher for many Australians to own an EV because, for example, they might live in an apartment where it’s difficult to use a charger at home.

“Australia continues to make progress on expanding the EV public charging network. In the past year alone, the number of charging locations and points has doubled to more than 1,800 public fast chargers across more than 1,000 locations nationwide.

“Electric vehicles are already clocking up tens of thousands of kilometres across Australia. When more EV drivers can comfortably charge up through an easily available and widespread charging network, range anxiety becomes a concern of the past.”

These models meet the criteria (more details below) and are ideal for those looking to transition to sustainable transportation.

This scheme is a significant component of Queensland’s Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy, which aims to lower transport emissions and encourage the adoption of safer, environmentally-conscious travel solutions.

Eligibility and Requirements E-Scooter

The E-Mobility Rebate Scheme offers substantial financial incentives, allowing eligible Queensland residents to receive a rebate on the purchase of approved e-scooter models. To qualify, applicants must be 18 years or older, residents of Queensland, and must not have previously received the rebate. Businesses are not eligible for participation in the scheme.

To qualify, E-scooters under this rebate must be designed for single-person use. They must be equipped with handlebars for steering, and must not exceed a speed of 25km/h. Additionally, they must conform to specific dimensions: no longer than 1,250mm, no wider than 700mm, and not heavier than 60kg when unladen.

Application Process E-Scooter

Prospective applicants must purchase their e-scooter from Segway Online on or after 23 September 2024, and then visit the QRIDA website to submit their applications.

Applicants should be ready with the necessary documentation, including proof of purchase, charger identification, and evidence of residency. The rebates are distributed on a first in basis. So, anyone interested needs to apply as soon as possible. Funding is limited therefore riders are encouraged to get their applications in quickly.

You cannot apply as a business or if you have already received the rebate.

Benefits of the Rebate

The scheme significantly reduces the upfront costs associated with purchasing an e-scooter, offering rebates up to $200. Beyond financial savings, the shift to e-scooters helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions and alleviates traffic congestion.

The increased adoption of e-scooters also contributes to improved air quality and reduced noise pollution in urban areas like Brisbane, offering a convenient alternative to traditional vehicles.

Take Action Now

Purchase your e-scooter from Segway Online today, then visit the QRIDA website for further details or to apply for the rebate. By participating in this initiative, you’re not only saving on purchase costs but also playing a major part in a more sustainable future. With Segway, you can support a cleaner, greener Queensland with every ride.

e-bikes – Tens of thousands of additional e-bikes could be on our roads with one change. Australia’s peak body for novated leasing said the current usage rules to qualify for tax breaks, unlike EVs, is constraining a potential surge in uptake.

Estimates from the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) show as many as 57,800 extra e-bikes could be on our roads within the first year of take-up if the fringe benefit tax (FBT) exemption had no restrictions on private use.

The FBT exemption that’s in place can apply through a salary package arrangement and help reduce the purchase price and running costs for workers. But awareness is low, and there is red tape as use is largely restricted to travel between home and work.

NALSPA chief executive Rohan Martin said interest is growing among workers and their employers for salary packaged e-bikes but changes are necessary to increase uptake.

“E-bikes are a perfect modern transport solution – they help with reducing the cost of living, increase exercise, and are environmentally-friendly,” Martin said.

“Cycling culture in Australia is still immature compared to other countries, unless you’re a lycra-clad devotee. E-bikes are changing the game.

“These E-bikes require less effort to pedal, can carry more weight and travel further distances much easier. Making them more practical and accessible for a larger number of people.

e-bikes are economical

“Riding e-bikes is a very economical way to commute. That can lead to significant savings compared to a car and even public transport. You’re not paying for parking, fares or fuel.”

The cost savings can be even greater on a novated lease as riders can get hold of one with zero upfront cost. Repayments as low as $3 a day, no GST on the purchase price. A reduction in taxable income, and no FBT if the bike is mostly used for commuting and work purposes.

“There are so many exciting new e-bike models on the market that would suit so many Australians. But the problem is awareness of the FBT exemption is low. Even if you find out about it, the current restriction on private use acts as a significant disincentive. To an employee looking to salary package an e-bike.

“The FBT exemption laws for e-bikes should be amended so that there are no limitations on private use. Just as it works for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. As we’ve seen with the success of the FBT exemption for electric vehicles. Which has helped see EV sales grow 150 per cent between 2022 and 2023. If you get the policy settings right we’ll likely see them surge in popularity.

“Before the EV FBT exemption was introduced. Battery and plug-in vehicles represented less than two percent of total SUV and passenger sales in Australia. In recent months, they have represented more than 14 percent.”

Bicester, UK and Shizuoka, Japan,

The Little Car Company, manufacturers of hand built electric scaled cars, today officially reveals the highly anticipated Tamiya Wild One MAX.

Based on the original Tamiya Wild One (58050) radio-controlled car – first released in 1985 – the Tamiya Wild One MAX has been relaunched as a full-scale vehicle and is now on sale worldwide, with road legal versions available for customers in the UK and EU.

The Tamiya Wild One MAX from The Little Car Company represents a culmination of careful design, extensive feedback from deposit holders and subsequent upgrades on the original concept to deliver outstanding performance and usability. Despite industry-wide supply delays, The Little Car Company has taken the time to listen to the community and implement improvements that enhance the overall experience.

Tamiya Wild One MAX

The Tamiya Wild One MAX comes equipped with premium features including Cobra bucket seats with 4-point harnesses, a 5″ digital screen with marine-grade switches, Brembo disc brakes all round, and adjustable Bilstein dampers paired with Eibach springs. It utilises 14″ Maxxis off-road tyres front and rear.

To enhance safety and comfort, The Little Car Company has made some modifications to the original R/C car design. The cockpit has been widened to comfortably accommodate two adult passengers, addressing a consistent request from existing deposit holders. Meanwhile, the front suspension turrets have been smoothed, improving visibility and pedestrian safety, while the front suspension itself has been upgraded from a “trailing arm” design to double wishbones. Ongoing development has seen the car increase in size, now measuring 3.6m (141.7″) in length and 1.9m (74.8″) in width. The Little Car Company has also developed a windscreen and wiper mechanism to enhance the car’s practicality.

For off-road enthusiasts, the Wild One MAX offers a ground clearance of 270mm, an approach angle of 34.1 degrees, a breakover angle of 28.4 degrees, and a departure angle of 50.8 degrees.

The Wild One MAX is powered by eight swappable battery packs, providing a total capacity of 14.4kWh, a maximum estimated range of 200km (on road) and a top speed of up to 62 mph (100km/h), with the vehicle weighing around 500kg in total. When existing deposit holders were surveyed about their interest in a road legal version, an overwhelming 95% expressed their desire for it. Consequently, each Wild One MAX has been developed by The Little Car Company to include a road legal pack in compliance with L7e quadricycle regulations* for the UK and EU markets. The Wild One MAX will be available in both left- hand drive and right-hand drive configurations.

Tamiya Wild One MAX Launch Edition

Strictly limited to the first 100 customers who place a deposit, the Launch Edition comes with exclusive features in addition to the already high specification vehicle. Once the 100 Launch Edition examples are accounted for, the company will offer the standard Tamiya Wild One MAX vehicles at the same price and in an unlimited number.

Each Launch Edition vehicle proudly displays a titanium plaque on the dashboard, acknowledging its status as one of the rare 1 of 100 Launch Edition units. The Launch Edition also encompasses a captivating carbon fibre dashboard, harmonising seamlessly with the matching carbon fibre key-fob. Additionally, in recognition of the vehicle’s influence and significance, Tamiya has decided to reintroduce a limited number of the original Wild One r/c model kits and, as part of the 100 limited-run Launch Edition package, the first 100 customers will be given a coveted Tamiya model kit of the iconic Wild One to build whilst they are waiting for delivery of their full-size car.

To add a touch of personalisation, the holographic decals that are only on the Launch Edition will be replicated at scale, allowing owners to embellish the rollbars on their r/c model vehicles to match their full-size equivalent.

Electric cars can be fun

Ben Hedley, CEO of The Little Car Company, said: “Here at The Little Car Company we are on a mission to show that electric cars can be fun. We believe that you don’t need one thousand horsepower, stomach churning acceleration or electronic torque vectoring systems to make EVs enjoyable. We’ve strived to make the Tamiya Wild One MAX an exhilarating drive by following Colin Chapman’s ethos of “Simplify, then add lightness”. In my opinion, modern cars are now too large, too fast, too complicated, and too heavy – we believe that there is an alternative. Our goal is to create innovative lightweight vehicles which bring the purity and fun back into driving.

I’m extremely proud of our talented engineering team who have brought this iconic Tamiya R/C car to life as a full-size car, capturing the nostalgia of the 1980s and bringing it to a brand-new audience with today’s technology. We also want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Tamiya community and deposit holders for their unwavering support and invaluable input throughout the design process. Their enthusiasm, suggestions and feedback have delivered what we are proud to unveil to the world today. We’re looking forward to delivering this premium spec version of the Tamiya Wild One MAX with all the “bells and whistles”. Meanwhile, development will continue for both lower specification versions and kits for future launch.”

Zapp Electric Vehicles Group Limited (NASDAQ: ZAPP) (“Zapp” or the “Company”), owner of a UK-based, high-performance two-wheeler electric vehicle brand, today announced it has been granted European patents for two components of its i300 electric urban motorcycle, which it anticipates will be ready for its first customer deliveries later this year.

The recognition from the European Patent Office relates to the i300’s Z-shaped exoskeleton and removable front fender. The grant of the patents highlights the innovative nature of the technology developed by Zapp to support the brand’s strategic vision, which encompasses the highest standards of design, performance, sustainability, manufacturing, and customer experience.

Zapp i300 exoskeleton

Zapp’s distinctive exoskeleton consists of two single-piece Z-shaped anodised aluminium components mounted on an underbone. It delivers a revolution in motorcycle chassis technology, and is central to the i300’s unique ability to combine the performance and dynamic handling of a motorbike with the step-through convenience of a scooter. The exoskeleton also endows the brand with its award-winning design language.

The fully recyclable Zapp exoskeleton solution provides numerous technical, sustainability, and commercial benefits. The two single-piece Z-shaped exoskeleton components replace a conventional-styled frame, which uses multiple connected tubes and welding points, allowing the vehicle to have a lower centre of gravity and lower weight, enhancing both handling and safety. The exoskeleton reduces the number of assembly components and also frees up space under the seat for storage. The Company believes the exoskeleton provides an ideal platform on which to base additional models and derivatives without significant additional investment.

Zapp i300 European Patents

Zapp’s second European patented component is the i300’s removable front fender, which brings a unique, almost infinite range of colourway personalisation options to the two-wheel sector for the first time. At any point after purchasing their i300, customers will be able to have the front fenders removed and replaced with new items in a colour of their choice. The personalisation upgrade will be carried out by an authorised ‘Zapper’ who will come to the customer’s home or workplace in a branded Zapp van, and perform the exchange. Going forwards, Zapp plans to collaborate with artists and leading cultural figures to create limited colourway collections.

The European patents (EP4058343 – ‘A seat-supporting structure for mounting on a motorcycle frame’ and EP4051563 – ‘Front fairing for a scooter’) further reinforce the world-class technology and design credentials of Zapp and its debut product, the i300 Carbon, which is now available to pre-order on Zapp’s website www.zappev.com.

Swin Chatsuwan, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zapp said: “The notification of not one but two European patents is enormously gratifying for Zapp and proves the innovative nature of the technology and design underpinning the brand’s i300 electric urban motorcycle. Our exoskeleton transforms two-wheeled chassis technology and is key to endowing the zero-emission i300 with the convenience of a step-though scooter and the dynamic performance of a larger motorcycle.

“Zapp’s patented removable front fenders will also revolutionise the two-wheeled vehicle category by offering customers a range of colourway personalisation options previously the exclusive domain of the supercar and hypercar sectors. The exoskeleton and the removable front fender are pivotal to Zapp’s determination to transform the two-wheeler segment with superbly designed, technically advanced, zero-emission, fun-to-ride products. However, these are just two of more than sixty novel technical aspects of the i300, which will further amplify the product’s considerable customer appeal as we move towards first deliveries commencing later this year.”
