Partnering with Electric Vehicles (EV) experts, Electrogenic, Babcock will convert four in-service military Land Rovers, two protected vehicles and two general service, from diesel fueled to EV using a drop-in kit and modified battery system.

The vehicles will then be put to the test by the Armoured Trials and Development Unit (ATDU) in a series of experimental battlefield / military scenarios, which will assess performance over steep terrain, wading and towing, and different climate-related conditions.

Chris Spicer, Babcock’s Managing Director of Engineering and Systems Integration – Land, said: “This is a great opportunity to investigate alternative engine technology, which will enable the British Army to extend the life of its Land Rovers as diesel becomes obsolete. I’m excited to see how the converted Land Rovers perform in a test environment against diesel and hybrid equivalents.

“Sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy and by partnering with Electrogenic, we’ll be supporting the MOD to be prepared for the shift to electric vehicles from 2030 and the UK in reaching its goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 .”

Babcock International

Babcock International was awarded the contract by Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), the procurement arm for the UK Armed Forces. Corporal Bryan Munce, from the Armoured Trials and Development Unit (ATDU) at MOD Bovington, said: “ATDU is supporting Defence to fully realise the strengths and weaknesses of electric vehicle technology through Project LURCHER. Mobility performance, exportable power, signature and cost reduction are just some of the considerations we will explore while partnering with Electrogenic and Babcock. In understanding what could enable our forces, it also informs MOD of potential threats to be cognizant of, to enhance our strategic approach.”

Steve Drummond, Co-Founder of Electrogenic, added: “We are delighted to be working with Babcock, and we’re immensely proud to be putting our market-leading EV technology to the ultimate test with the British Army. To be selected is a testament to the sophistication of our technology, and our years of experience developing Land Rover EV conversions.

“At the core of our offering, is the ability to have total control over every element of the electric drivetrain. As a result, our EV technology elevates performance – particularly when in adverse conditions and off-road – to a whole new level. It’s the ideal fit for military vehicles.”

Electrogenic classic car EV conversions,

British EV technology company Electrogenic, known for its market-leading classic car EV conversions, has fitted the first of its revolutionary ‘drop-in’ conversion kits to a customer’s classic Porsche 911.

This first ‘plug-and-play’ conversion, which features the Oxford, UK based firm’s proprietary EV powertrain technology, future-proofs this lovely classic 911. The electrified classic now combines sensational, clean performance with excellent everyday useability and total reliability.

The ‘drop-in’ kits feature the innovative tech that has underpinned Electrogenic’s sustained growth in recent years – developed and honed over the course of countless bespoke EV conversion projects.

Steve Drummond, Co-Founder, Electrogenic, said: “We’re delighted to present the first customer car fitted with one our revolutionary drop-in kits. The ‘plug-and-play’ kits have been designed to breathe new life into iconic, much-loved models, so it feels appropriate that the first kit-equipped car to be delivered is a Porsche 911 – the most iconic, revered sports car of them all.”

The classic Porsche 911 conversion is just one option from the firm’s comprehensive ‘drop-in’ kit range, offered under Electrogenic’s recently Expanded ‘Powered by Electrogenic’ technology arm. The outfit also offers ingeniously packaged, easy to install, EV powertrain solutions for the Land Rover, Jaguar E-Type and Triumph Stag, future-proofing these iconic models.

The drop-in kits are carefully designed to be straightforward to install; they can be easily fitted by a qualified technician. Slotting neatly into the existing architecture of the vehicle, they are also entirely reversible.

The kits are offered alongside Electrogenic’s world-renowned bespoke conversions.

Landmark first customer car

The first customer car to sport a drop-in conversion is a stunning, ‘Irish Green’ Porsche 911. Originally a 1985 G-Body, ‘backdated’ by the owner to evoke the iconic 2.7 RS, the car is now brought right up to date thanks to Electrogenic’s sporting ‘E62’ 911 package.

The E62 kit features the latest 160kW water-cooled motor. Compact yet potent, the cutting-edge EV powertrain sends 215bhp and 230lb/ft to the rear wheels through a neatly integrated single-speed, fixed ratio transmission. With great reserves of seamless power, the 0-60 mph sprint is dispatched in less than 5 seconds – not dissimilar to a modern 911.

For those after even more performance, Electrogenic also offer an E62s package, with a 240kW motor putting out 320bhp and 310lb/ft. E62s gives the classic 911 eye-opening, modern supercar levels of performance: 0-60 mph takes just 3.8 seconds, and the rampant, relentless acceleration is sustained deep into triple digit speeds.

Both kits equip the 911 with 62kWh of brand-new, OEM-grade batteries, densely packed together using Electrogenic’s ingenious mounting system, and nestled low down in the car. They slot in at the font, where the fuel tank was located, and within the engine bay – improving weight distribution vs the standard car. Both E62 and E62s conversions deliver 180-200+ miles range in real world driving.

Thanks to the use of the latest, lightweight componentry, the increase in mass is kept to a minimum; the electrified 911 weighs only 100kg more than a conventionally powered example.

The sophisticated packages have been extensively developed by Electrogenic’s engineering and software development teams to include all the modern features a driver could need. The 911 has carefully optimised Eco, Sport and Traffic profiles, honed over the course of an extensive testing programme, along with energy-recouping regen for the brakes and throttle. The settings are infinitely configurable and can be tailored to an owner’s specific requirements.

Elsewhere, the 911’s original instruments have been repurposed to display vital information such as range and charge speeds, while the cabin is now kept toasty with a super-efficient, discreetly installed, electric heater.

The kits – which are compatible with both G-Body and 964 generation 911s include rapid CCS charging as standard, for total convenience. A full charge via CCS takes around 50 minutes.

Drummond: “The delivery of this special 911 marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Electrogenic. The kits enable us to offer our market-leading, ‘plug and play’ EV technology to customers around the globe, and at scale, taking our business to a whole new level.

“We’ve been inundated with interest from all over the globe since we launched the kits, and we’re now looking forward to delivering truly transformative clean and reliable electric motoring to enthusiasts the world over, working in close partnership with our fast-growing network of installers. This really is just the start, so stay tuned for further exciting announcements in the coming months.”

Background: Cutting Edge Technology, Developed in Britain- Electrogenic

The drop-in kits feature Electrogenic’s sector-leading, proprietary EV technology – the tech that has underpinned the company’s rapid rise and sustained growth in recent years. The kits are defined by their quality and depth of engineering, developed in-house by a research and development team comprising leading automotive engineers, programmers and electrical experts.

The range of drop-in kits reflects Electrogenic’s approach of developing and manufacturing its own technology, which includes in-house designed software, printed circuit boards (PCBs) and digital dashboards, as well as bespoke Battery Management Systems and vehicle charging technology.

The drop-in kits also use highly innovative mechanical componentry, including a unique system for creating high-density battery packs, as well as exceptionally compact in-line and transverse reduction gearboxes, all manufactured in the UK. The cleverly packaged units ensure that for each ‘drop-in’ kit variant, the existing vehicles’ existing structure and architecture is preserved. This approach ensures that all Electrogenic conversions are entirely reversible.

The ‘drop-in’ kit range is offered internationally through a rapidly-growing network of partner installers; these include several outfits in the USA. The kits are offered alongside Electrogenic’s world-renowned bespoke conversions.

Steve Drummond, co-founder, Electrogenic said: “We’re delighted to announce Xerbera and TATC as the first partners in our exclusive installer network, and Electrogenic’s initial entry into the US market.

“We’ve been inundated with enquiries from North America since we first revealed the kits, which convert automotive icons to sophisticated EV power, so we’re delighted to have such fantastic partners serving customers across the pond.

“In TATC and Xerbera we have two partners whose values are very much aligned with ours; they both place quality of workmanship and customer service front and centre in what they do. They also share our broader vision; they’re both driven to convert these wonderful, iconic vehicles to run on clean, sustainable electricity.”

By leveraging the international network of exclusive partners, Electrogenic will cater to the significant global demand that exists for its highly-innovative EV conversion technology – delivering dynamic, sustainable and reliable electric motoring to a wider audience than ever before – taking the company as a whole to an exciting new era.

All works will be carried out with Xerbera’s customary quality and attention to detail, creating silent, powerful, go-anywhere Defenders equipped for adventuring in a low-carbon world. The Texas firm will also carry out conversions of Jaguar E-Types, Porsche 911s, and other models that become powered by Electrogenic.

Transformative EV technology, developed in the Britain

Electrogenic’s innovative range of kits is produced under the outfit’s recently expanded ‘Powered by Electrogenic’ technology arm, and comprises options for the Land Rover Defender, Jaguar E-Type, classic Porsche 911 as well as the Triumph Stag – with different specifications of battery and motors available – catering a broad range of customer needs and budgets.

Land Rover Defender: transformed performance on and off road

The innovative range of Powered by Electrogenic drop-in kits kicks off with an expanded range of road-optimised Land Rover Defender EV conversion packages, available for all pre-2016 Defender 90, 110 and 127 models.

The new variants follow on from the Agricultural Defender drop-in kit revealed earlier this year – developed in partnership with Innovate UK and tested extensively as part of the working fleet on Worthy Farm, home of the Glastonbury Festival.

The expanded Defender EV conversion range will comprise three different variants, each tailored to suit different customer needs. All offer transformed driveability and performance in both on and off-road driving scenarios. The range starts with the E62 kit, which packs a 62kWh battery supplying a 120kW water-cooled motor, delivering a real-world range of 120 miles in mixed driving, with more in urban or off-road use.

Moving up the range, there are the E70 and E93 packages, with 70kWh and 93kWh of battery capacity respectively. Both pack a 150kW motor, offering immediate, muscular acceleration up to motorway speeds and beyond – elevating Defender performance to a new level. In real-world driving E70 and E93 converted Defenders deliver 130 and 150 miles of range respectively.

All Defender conversion kits drive through a fixed-ratio transmission, retaining permanent four-wheel drive, along with high and low range gear select for exceptional off-road driveability. With ample, instantly available torque, all variants make light work of ascents, even when towing a heavy trailer.

Batteries are packaged under the bonnet and beneath the boot floor – ensuring that interior and luggage space are in no way compromised – while the proprietary drivetrain technology is carefully integrated into the vehicle’s existing architecture, so no modifications are required.

Jaguar E-Type: performance to match timeless looks

Powered by Electrogenic have developed state-of-the art drop-in kits to modernise another British automotive icon, and to many the most beautiful car of all: Jaguar E-Type.

Options are again available to suit a variety of customer needs – compatible with both E-Type coupes and convertibles. The range starts with the E43 kit, which features a 43kWh battery and a 120kW water-cooled motor, all neatly packaged to slot into the E-Type’s existing structure, and offering 150 miles of real-world range. Those seeking more touring range can opt for the E62r kit, which packs a larger 62kWh battery, again feeding a 120kW motor – giving the sleek 1960s machine a range of 200+ miles.

Powered by Electrogenic has also developed a high-performance E-Type EV conversion kit, the E48s variant, which marries a 48kWh battery with a high-output 150kW motor, for modern sports car performance – 0-60 mph is dispatched in under 5 seconds – along with a real-world range of 160+ miles.

Powered by Electrogenic EV conversion kits – carefully designed so as to be entirely reversible – give the E-Type the reliability, driveability and effortless performance to match its looks.

Porsche 911: an iconic sports car readied for the future

Powered by Electrogenic has also created an EV conversion drop in kit for what many consider to be the most iconic sports car of all: the Porsche 911. The exhaustively engineered and tested packages give this famously practical machine a new lease of life, combining sensational, clean performance with excellent everyday useability and total reliability.

Two variants of the 911 drop-in kit are offered – compatible with G-body and 964 911s – the E62 and high-performance E62s – both of which pack 62kWh batteries nestled low down in the car, replacing the fuel tank and within the engine bay – improving the weight distribution versus a standard car. Both versions deliver 200+ miles of range in real world driving.

The sporting E62 package features a 160kW motor enabling it to hit 60 mph in under 5 seconds – not dissimilar to a modern 911. For those after a truly thrilling package, the E62s kit features an even more potent, 240kW motor, giving the classic 911, eye-opening, modern supercar levels of performance. 0-60 mph takes just 3.8 seconds, and the rampant, relentless acceleration is sustained deep into triple digit speeds.

All Powered by Electrogenic drop-in kits drive through single speed, fixed ratio transmissions.

All variants are capable of up to 6.6kW AC charging, as well as rapid CCS charging, for total convenience. A full charge via CCS takes circa 50 minutes for a 62kWh battery, and 75 minutes for a 93kWh battery.

Further details on Electrogenic’s global network of installation partners will be announced in the coming weeks and months.

Expressions of interest are now being taken for Land Rover Defender, Jaguar E-Type and Porsche 911 drop-in kits.

Pioneering classic car electrification specialist Electrogenic has created an all-electric Citroen DS. The 1971 DS is a fresh and exciting version of an all-time great French motoring icon, renowned for its beauty and luxurious drive.

The Oxford-based company has retained and improved the car’s famous ‘magic carpet’ ride, combining it with a silent, zero-emission electric powertrain.

Pioneering classic car electrification company, Electrogenic, creates the first professionally converted battery electric Citroen DS

The company has created an innovative electric pump for the hydro-pneumatic suspension ensuring the car maintains its famous ‘magic carpet ride’ – silently

A better version of itself – the silent, zero-emission electric powertrain enhances the DS’s comfortable and serene driving experience

Creating what is believed to be the first professionally converted electric Citroen DS, Electrogenic has removed the car’s original 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and replaced it with a ‘Hyper9’ brushless electric motor. This produces 120bhp, allied with 235Nm of instant torque – both of which are substantial increases over the original. Power is delivered to the front wheels through the car’s existing manual gearbox.

Housed within the DS’s sleek saloon body is a 48.5kWh battery, offering a real-world range of approximately 140 miles on every charge. The car is fitted with a 29kW charger, which will charge the batteries in around two hours. Both the battery size and charger type can be tailored to suit the type of driving an owner will use it for. An optional ‘range extender’ battery provides customers the choice to extend the range of the car to over 200 miles.

One of the DS’s defining features is its hydro-pneumatic suspension system, which enables it to self-level, and is responsible for the car’s famously plush ride quality. Rather than using the original noisy mechanical pump, Electrogenic has created a silent electric pump, which delivers a more sophisticated ride than the original.

Electrogenic always maintains the beauty of the original car when converting classics to electric power, so the DS’s distinctive design remains unchanged. The absence of exhaust pipes and a subtle new “DS EV electronique” decal on the boot, are the only visual clues to the car’s new electric powertrain.

Steve Drummond, Director and Co-Founder of Electrogenic “Repowering classic cars with all-electric drive brings a number of benefits, from ease of use to reliability and performance gains. But with our conversions, the aim is always to enhance the original characteristics of the car. In this respect, the Citroen DS was ideally suited to an electric conversion – the silent powertrain adds to the serene driving experience and fits perfectly with the character of the car.”

Ian Newstead, Director and Co-Founder of Electrogenic “It seems right to use modern technology to future-proof a car that was so far ahead of its time when it came out in the 1950s. Our conversion breathes new life into the DS and means that future generations can continue to enjoy its charm for decades to come.

“As with all first-time conversions, the DS presented us with unique challenges. In this case adapting the hydro-pneumatic suspension to run without the combustion engine. The old pump was so noisy that it detracted from the silent drive of the car, but our new electric pump solved the issue completely. As with every conversion, the DS has added further to our knowledge of converting beautiful classics.”

The Citroen DS has been converted to a customer’s specification. Electrogenic uses its leading, proprietary EV technology to sympathetically convert a wide range of classics to electric power, including recent world first conversions of the Triumph Stag and the first professionally converted four-wheeler Morgan.
