Ford Australia is set to deliver more choice within the light-duty van segment, confirming pricing and specifications on the new 2025.75MY E-Transit Custom and Transit Custom PHEV, ahead of first deliveries starting in Q3 2025.

• Combining electrified powertrains with classic Transit DNA, both E-Transit Custom and Transit Custom PHEV set new segment benchmarks in safety equipment, packaging, and towing capability.

Pricing for Ford Transit

Four variants will be available, with the choice of plug-in hybrid or battery electric powertrains in either Long Wheelbase Trend or Short Wheelbase Sport. The Transit Custom PHEV Trend LWB and Transit Custom PHEV Sport SWB has a recommended Manufacturers List Price of $67,590 and $69,990, respectively.

Whereas the all-electric 64kWh E-Transit Custom carries a recommended Manufacturers List price of $77,590 for the Trend LWB and $79,990 for the Sport SWB variant.

Designed to maximise storage space with efficient underfloor packaging to house the batteries, all plug-in Transit Custom and E-Transit Custom variants carry the same load space of their turbo-diesel Transit Custom LWB and SWB counterparts, measuring in at 6.0m³ and 5.2m³ respectively. Maximum payload capacity, based on kerb weight, ranges between 1111kg to 1206kg depending on the variant, and braked towing capacity is 2.3 tonnes, which is class-leading for an electrified van.

Powered by a 111kW/320Nm electric motor and 86kW/209Nm 2.5L petrol engine, with a combined power output of 171kW across a wide powerband, the Transit Custom PHEV has an official WLTP fuel economy rating of just 1.7L/100km and an electric-only range of up to 54km from its liquid-cooled 11.8kWh battery.

Ford Transit Custom PHEV features three EV Drive modes

Offering drivers true flexibility while on the go, the low-emission Transit Custom PHEV features three EV Drive modes: Auto EV, EV Now, and EV Later. Auto EV automatically deploys a combination of petrol and electric power to optimise driving range and performance. EV Now, operates solely on the electric motor. EV Later, utilises the 2.5L petrol motor, preserving battery charge for when the driver chooses to switch back to either Auto EV or EV Now modes.

The zero-emission E-Transit Custom is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 160kW of power and 415Nm of torque, paired with a 64kWh battery. Plugged into a DC charger, it can charge from 15-80% in 32 minutes at a charging rate of 125kW and can fully charge from empty overnight in approximately 6.7 hours using an 11kW AC charger.​

Maximising range, particularly in winter, the E-Transit Custom features a Vapour Injected Heat Pump, which effectively recycles heat from the powertrain for use through the digital climate control system. Additionally, range and drivability are enhanced with One-Pedal Driving Mode , which intuitively controls vehicle speed using only the accelerator pedal. This feature allows the vehicle to come to a complete stop without needing to engage the brake in certain situations.

Ergonomics, safety, convenience, and comfort

Recognising that Transit Customs perform double duties as mobile offices while on the clock, Ford designers have focused on ergonomics, safety, convenience, and comfort. Interior cabin space has been optimised, with a column-mounted auto-shifter, electric parking brake and dual-front airbags repositioned into the roof, freeing up valuable cabin space for more storage. Seat upholstery is a hard-wearing cloth trim, with Sport variants accented with blue striping. The three-person front seat setup features variable heating across the outboard pews, with all three featuring individually tilting seat bases, which flip up to maximise in-cabin storage. Integrated sidesteps, wide-opening doors and a fully flat cabin floor design, further aid in convenience when entering and exiting the cabin from either kerbside or roadside.

Drivers are kept connected while on the road with a 12-inch colour digital instrument cluster, 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Ford’s SYNC® 4 . This intuitive system includes wireless Apple CarPlay^TM & Android Auto^TM , integrated navigation , an embedded 5G modem, and FordPass.

All electrified models come standard with Keyless Push Button Start, while Sport models benefit from Smart Keyless Entry. While an option on diesel- and PHEV-powered Transit Custom models, both E-Transit Custom variants feature the Secure Visibility Pack as standard, which integrates a Digital Rear View Mirror fed by a camera on the rear load door with a built-in Dash Cam, while removing glazing from the load area to increase security.

Door configuration

The standard configuration includes a kerbside single sliding side load door and rear twin barn doors, with optional rear liftgate door and dual sliding side load doors available for $700 and $1000 respectively.¹ In LWB models, there’s space for up to four standard Euro Pallets, LED Load Area Compartment Lights and up to eight tie-down loops, making it a highly practical and versatile commercial van.

The exterior design of the Transit Custom PHEV has been refined to optimise aerodynamics, featuring a sleek front fascia that is designed to improve range and efficiency. The E-Transit Custom takes aero-efficiency a step further, with a unique trapezoid grille, featuring polygon detailing that directs airflow to key powertrain components. Sport models dial the design up another notch, with larger 17-inch matte black alloy wheels in lieu of the 16-inch steel wheels, Sport body kit, rear spoiler, and stripes package that run the length of the van—a nod to the original Transit Sport that debuted nearly two decades ago.

Overview

The MY25.75 Ranger PHEV line-up will consist of four variants at launch; XLT, Sport, Wildtrak, and the special launch edition Stormtrak. The Manufacturers List Price (MLP) for all four models is as follows:

Ranger PHEV Powertrain

The Ranger PHEV adds a fifth powertrain option to the Ranger lineup, combining a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine with a 75kW electric motor (e-motor) and 11.8kWh (usable) battery that delivers the off-road and towing capability that Ranger customers need for work and play.

Combining both the combustion and electric power results in maximum total system outputs of 207kW at 4600rpm, and 697Nm at 2500rpm. The 2.3-litre petrol engine is tuned for optimised hybrid efficiency, and produces 138kW at 4600rpm, and 411Nm at 2700rpm.

A new Modular Hybrid Transmission (MHT) integrates Ranger PHEV’s e-motor between the engine and transmission, allowing for a range of hybrid and EV modes that owners can use to tailor their driving experience to meet their specific needs. The traction battery is packaged between specially engineered frame rails underneath the rear loadbox.

The MHT allows the Ranger PHEV to benefit from the same go-anywhere abilities of the existing Ranger line-up, with a mechanical transfer case ensuring both axles can deliver the required power to all four wheels – even when climbing steep and rugged hills.

Braking transmission etc

Ranger PHEV’s MHT also incorporates regenerative braking, allowing the driver to capture and store energy during braking, which would otherwise be lost. This system is activated by decelerating (either releasing the accelerator pedal, or applying the brake), and can be observed through the EV Coach in the driver cluster screen.

Ranger PHEV carries over the advanced full-time 4WD system first introduced to Ranger with the 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel. It utilises an electronically controlled on-demand 2-speed transfer case. This system offers the driver 2H, 4A, 4H, and 4L as available modes of operation.

When 4A is selected, the system continuously varies power to the front wheels for optimum performance for all on-road conditions. It also features a locking rear differential that elevates its off-road capabilities in rugged and rough terrain.

Not only does the Ranger PHEV have more power and torque than any of its diesel siblings, it is also efficient with a claimed combined fuel economy of just 2.9L/100km.

“All owners need to do is plug the Ranger PHEV in every night to charge the battery like they would their phone,” said Myles Hartley, General Manager of Electric Vehicles, Ford Australia.

“The power to unlock incredible fuel saving is in the hands of owners, with Ranger PHEV’s drive modes giving drivers the ability to complete entire trips without using the combustion engine or saving the battery for when it will be at its most efficient – such as slow stop-start traffic.

“Even without a charged battery providing electrical assistance, the 2.3-litre EcoBoost has proven to provide impressive highway fuel economy figures. And for when getting off the line quickly is a top priority, Ranger PHEV benefits from the ‘Sport’ drive mode that was previously exclusive to Ranger Raptor, which engages the hybrid system to deliver as much power and torque as possible with a sharp throttle calibration.”

Pro Power Onboard

Pro Power Onboard is available for Australians for the first time with Ranger PHEV, with every variant in Australia coming equipped with the ‘high output’ 6.9kW system as standard.^[2] With a single 10-amp, 2.3kW socket in the cabin, and twin 15-amp, 3.45kW sockets in the tray, Pro Power Onboard uses the 11.8kWh battery to provide potentially hours of energy to worksite equipment, campsites, or even a caravan directly from Ranger PHEV.

“Pro Power Onboard is a game changer for Ranger owners,” said Phil Millar, Chief Program Engineer, Ford Ranger PHEV.

“Now instead of having to carry a heavy generator or batteries that take up precious room and can often be very noisy, a Ranger PHEV owner can plug virtually anything they might want to power directly into the vehicle itself.”

“With 15-amp sockets in the tray, that’s equivalent to having a powered caravan park site with you anywhere you might want to explore – the possibilities are almost endless!

“We’ve engineered Pro Power Onboard for maximum convenience in real-world situations. It functions with the car locked and when it is plugged in to charge, plus if the battery should deplete completely the 2.3-litre EcoBoost then kicks in to keep everything running.”

EV Drive Modes

Ranger PHEV allows customers to choose how and when they wish to utilise the capability provided to them by their high voltage battery. Replacing the auto stop-start button in the centre console is the “EV” button, allowing customers to select from four EV Drive Modes.

“The different drive modes in Ranger PHEV gives the freedom of flexibility to owners in how they want to utilise the vehicle’s hybrid powertrain,” said Thomas Smith, Product & Retail Marketing Manager – Commercial EVs.

“In Auto EV the Ranger PHEV will choose between the combustion engine and battery to prioritise maximum power or efficiency, depending on driver demands. If you only have a handful of short trips that day, leave the Ranger PHEV in Auto EV and let the vehicle take care of everything.

No Range Anxiety

“But if you know you only have a single journey for the day, and will end your trip with charging available, you might choose EV Now for example. This means the Ranger PHEV will only use power provided by the battery and provide maximum fuel saving.

“On the flipside, if you know you have a long drive ahead of you and want to keep your electric driving range for when it is most effective, or you’d like to save the battery to use Pro Power Onboard at your destination, EV Later prioritises the combustion engine to maintain the Ranger’s current state of charge.

“Finally, EV Charge turns the combustion engine into a generator to help put juice back into the battery. A perfect use case for this might be when an owner is travelling and doesn’t have access to a wall socket but uses Pro Power Onboard to power their items when camping –

by selecting EV Charge when driving between destinations they’ll ensure they arrive at the next night’s location with a battery ready to power their amenities through the night.”

Towing and Payload^[3]

Not only does the Ranger PHEV maintain the 3,500kg braked towing capability that the nameplate has become famous for, it is also able to carry more than any other PHEV dual-cab ute – with a payload that exceeds its nearest competitor by almost 200kg.

With a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 3500kg across the four-variant line-up, the Ranger PHEV boasts an impressive 973kg of payload (based on minimum kerb weight) in the XLT.

A unique-to-PHEV loadbox design which is longer than the regular Ranger means the tray length now exceeds 1600mm and is able to accommodate two European pallets. Payload figures for the Sport, Wildtrak and Stormtrak are 934kg, 885kg, and 808kg respectively.

Adding the hybrid powertrain brings unique benefits when the Ranger PHEV is hitched up and towing a load, such as exceptional launch capability from a standstill due to the additional torque from the electric motor which can be particularly beneficial when towing a heavy load up a hill – for example hauling a boat out of the water at the local ramp.

“We know how important carrying and towing heavy loads is to our Ranger customers, so this was a top priority in the development of Ranger PHEV,” Millar added.

“But there is more to safe towing and hauling ability than numbers on a spec sheet – we’ve also ensured Ranger PHEV comes fitted with class-leading technology like our integrated trailer brake controller.^[4]

“Beyond just a simple trailer brake controller, the Ranger PHEV’s system is fully integrated with the rest of its active safety suite, meaning features like the electronic stability control factor in the trailer’s brakes and activate them as necessary.”

Clever tech like the Trailer Light Check is standard across the range, while Pro Trailer Back-Up Assist is optional on Sport variants and standard on Wildtrak and Stormtrak.^[5]

Gross Combined Mass (GCM) for Ranger PHEV is 6580kg.

Additional Changes

The first-ever hybrid Ranger brings with it several changes unique to the PHEV, such as the electronic fuel filler release. Regular petrol engines manage fuel vapour and petrol tank pressures during the regular combustion process.

However, as PHEV drive cycles involve periods where the engine is not run for an extended period, fuel vapours and tank/fuel filler pressures need to be managed. As a result, the Ranger PHEV’s fuel filler door is locked until the button is pressed and the vapour purged. This button is located on the dash.

Additionally, a new push/pull door can be found on the passenger side of the vehicle for Ranger PHEVs charge port, indicated by a debossed lightning bolt symbol. The port’s auto lock function ensures the cable remains fixed during charging.

Ranger PHEV not only has a unique visual wheel design, but they are also wider than standard compared to diesel variants, have new lip mouldings, and a bespoke tyre which has been developed to carry higher loads to manage the incremental weight of the High Voltage Battery whilst maintaining payload and handling ability.

Given Ranger PHEV can drive almost silently in EV Now mode, it comes fitted with an Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS). AVAS uses an externally mounted speaker to alert pedestrians of the approaching quiet vehicle, decreasing the risk of being involved in a collision. The system is on when the vehicle is moving up to 30kph when the engine is not operating.

Finally, unlike its combustion-powered siblings, the Ranger PHEV utilises high voltage electric air conditioning and heating to ensure optimum operating conditions, including when the petrol engine is off.

The all-electric Ford SuperVan 4.2 will attend a further two events in Australia as part of its local tour, with stops at both the Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival and Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix locked in for the 2000-horsepower E-Transit racer.
SuperVan 4.2 will take part in on-track dynamic demonstrations at both events, while also being joined by a number of road and race vehicles from the wider Ford family for static display.

News of the additional events

The news of the additional events follows SuperVan 4.2’s official arrival in Australia late last week, with the electric demonstrator completing a successful shakedown test at Sydney Motorsport Park on Tuesday, February 13.

The test allowed the Ford team to complete system checks ahead of SuperVan 4.2 making a series of high-speed demonstrations at the iconic Mount Panorama circuit during both the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour and Thrifty Bathurst 500.

“SuperVan 4.2 was built to thrill crowds, and demonstrate the capability of Ford’s electric performance vehicles, so we are very excited to be able to show more Aussies what makes this the most exciting van on earth,” said Sriram Pakkam, Senior Manager, Formula 1 and EV Demonstrators, Ford Performance.

While Romain Dumas will be at the helm of SuperVan 4.2 as it takes on the challenge of Mount Panorama, a number of special guests will don their race suits to steer the electric monster at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival and Australian Grand Prix.

Adelaide Motorsport Festival

The Adelaide Motorsport Festival has quickly become a must-attend event for Aussie rev-heads, with SuperVan 4.2 to bring a taste of the future. SuperVan 4.2 will be joined on track by a supporting cast of Ford road and race cars.

During the Australian Grand Prix, SuperVan 4.2 will tackle the Albert Park circuit with a special guest at the wheel on Thursday, March 21. It will then be on display at the Ford Performance Experience display in the Fan Zone from March 22 to 24, allowing Aussie racing fans a chance to see the electric demonstrator up close and personal alongside the all-new seventh-generation Mustang Dark Horse, and all-electric Mustang Mach-E GT.

“Ford is on an exciting electrification pathway, and SuperVan 4.2 is a great illustration of what electrified performance can mean,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia.

Ford’s E-Transit SuperVan 4.2 is set to electrify Australia’s Mount Panorama racing circuit during the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour race weekend with a series of thrilling public demonstrations.

The all-electric demonstrator vehicle will be unleashed upon Australia’s most famous racing circuit with Romain Dumas at the helm in a series of runs set to thrill onlookers during both the build-up to Australia’s international GT3 enduro, and the Thrifty Bathurst 500 Supercars season opener the following weekend.

Mount Panorama is the latest stop on SuperVan 4.2’s global tour, with the track monster previously conquering the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in the USA.

Along with high-speed demonstration runs during the race weekends, SuperVan will be on display throughout the Bathurst ‘SuperFest’ week and taking part in a number of public activations, allowing Australian racing fans their first opportunity to see the latest iteration of the iconic concept’s lineage.

“Driving SuperVan 4.2 is always a huge privilege and after the successful outing at Pikes Peak, I am delighted that the Ford Performance team keep finding new and exciting ways to push the envelope. With 1400 horsepower being delivered to all four wheels, SuperVan 4.2 already has an impressive track pedigree. During its assault on the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb the all-electric racer finished second outright and first in class – smashing the class record in the process.

This was thanks to a number of key upgrades since it was first revealed, as SuperVan 4.0, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2022, including the shedding of almost 400kg of weight, an enhanced battery and electric motors, and a new aerodynamic package capable of generating two tonnes of downforce at 240km/h.

The Legend of SuperVan

The Repco Bathurst 12 Hour will be the first appearance of any Ford SuperVan on Australian soil, marking a historic moment for the famous nameplate which has thrilled racing fans around the world for more than fifty years.

There have been a number of high-performance Transit concepts throughout Ford’s history, with the very first, SuperVan 1, making its debut at Brands Hatch in the UK on Easter Monday, 1971.

The original SuperVan was powered by a mid-mounted 400 horsepower version of the monstrous V8 that powered the GT40 to victory at Le Mans.

SuperVan 1 became an instant hit, performing on-track demonstrations around the United Kingdom, demonstrating the type of dynamics that define Ford’s Transit nameplate.

It would be 13 years before the sequel, SuperVan 2, stormed onto the scene at the Donnington Truck Grand Prix in 1984. A year later, SuperVan 2 used all its Cosworth DFL V8 to achieve a stunning 280km/h at Silverstone.

In 1994 the same car underwent a massive upgrade, transforming into SuperVan 3 with a new seven-eighths scale fibreglass body and 650 horsepower Cosworth ‘HB’ V8, and would continue to perform public demonstrations until 2001.

Supervan 3 underwent a full restoration in 2004, recommencing public demonstrations to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Ford Transit range.

The SuperVan name would then return in 2022 with the debut of SuperVan 4.0. Gone were the combustion engines of previous generations, replaced with four cutting-edge electric motors and a 50kWh battery.

A collaboration between Ford Performance and STARD, SuperVan 4.0 is capable of accelerating to 100km/h from a standstill in less than two seconds.

Ford will offer customers a plug-in hybrid version of Australia’s favourite 4×4 pick-up from early 2025. Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will provide electric driving capability. Combined with the adventure-ready versatility and work-ready dependability customers have come to expect from Ranger.

The first-ever Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will mark a significant step forward in Ford’s plans to offer a wide range of powertrain options for customers in the mid-sized pick-up segment.

“The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid is a best-of-both-worlds solution for work, play, and family. Offering customers zero-tailpipe emissions EV driving for short trips, or hybrid performance that delivers incredible on- and off-road performance,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand.

“Ranger Plug-In Hybrid will bring all of the towing and payload capability our Australian customers expect of Ranger, and with Pro Power Onboard for the first time, Ranger owners will have power for both work and play.”

Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will deliver more torque than any other Ranger, thanks to a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor and rechargeable battery system. It can be driven in pure electric mode for more than 45 kilometres² without using a drop of fuel or producing tailpipe emissions, helping customers save at the pump.

This EV-only capability will be extremely useful for Australian Ranger customers, with more than half travelling 40km or less per day³.

The targeted maximum braked towing capacity of the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid is 3,500 kg⁴ – the same as the rest of the Ranger line-up.

Ranger PHEV – Pro Power Onboard

Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will also feature Pro Power Onboard, enabling customers to power their tools and appliances on a worksite or remote campsite by plugging them into power outlets embedded in both the cargo bed and the cabin. That means noisy, bulky, heavy generators can be left at home, leaving more space in the cargo bed for other gear and equipment.

In addition to having on-demand electricity, Ranger Plug-in Hybrid’s EV drive modes will give customers more flexibility in deciding how and when to use the EV battery power.

Ranger Plug-In Hybrid also comes equipped with Ranger’s proven four-wheel-drive capability, selectable drive modes and advanced driver safety and driver assist features⁵.

Kicking off the line-up in Australia is the Mach-E Select which is priced from $79,990* (MLP). This model boasts a 71kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery mated to a single electric motor which delivers 198kW and 430Nm of torque via the rear wheels. New for 2023, the LFP battery will allow Ford to offer the Mach-E with fresh technology proving to be exceptionally durable, using fewer high-demand, high-cost materials and with the ability to sustain fast charging as it approaches maximum capacity. The Mach-E Select will offer a driving range of up to 470 kilometres¹.

Mustang Mach-E Select is generously equipped with a large 15.5-inch infotainment screen (standard across the range) running Ford’s latest-generation SYNC® 4A² system. For enhanced visibility when parking a 360-degree camera⁷ is standard as is a B&O³ sound system with 10 speakers and subwoofer. Wireless phone⁴ charging as standard means you can conveniently charge your compatible smartphone without the hassle of a charging cable.

Across the line-up there’s plenty of room for five people with excellent leg and headroom in the front and back. There are ISOFIX mounts on the two outboard seats and top tether anchors for all three back seats, making installing child seats easy. The rear seats fold 60:40 to increase rear luggage space when needed.

Mach-E Select features Black Onyx Sensico seats in the front and back; a premium artificial leather upholstery. The front seats are eight-way powered.

As the performance-oriented model in the line-up, Mach-E GT features MagneRide® Active Suspension which can adjust up to 1000 times a second allowing the dampers to respond in real-time to changing road conditions or driving style. The system also automatically adjusts damping force based on the selected drive mode.

Speaking of drive modes, GT adds Untame Plus⁶ to the modes available on the other models: Active, Whisper or Untame. This setting is designed for closed-course driving only and adjusts everything from battery cooling to steering to throttle response, traction and stability controls, all-wheel drive strategy and ensures consistent power and torque delivery for longer-lasting thrills.

Ensuring it stops as well as it goes, Mustang Mach-E GT runs Brembo® Flexira front performance brakes, 20-inch alloys wrapped in bespoke Pirelli tyres.

Reserve Mustang Mach-E online

In addition to announcing pricing, Ford Australia confirmed it will open online ordering for Mustang Mach-E from around 2pm AEST this afternoon.

“Mustang Mach-E represents a shift from the traditional and will appeal to a wide range of buyers,” added Danni Winter, Marketing Director, Ford Australia. “This is why we’ve made the decision to offer customers the chance to reserve their vehicle online. It’s a natural part of our digital evolution and allows our customers to shop with their Authorised Ford EV Dealer 24/7.”

To purchase a Mustang Mach-E, customers will need to access the Ford Australia online reservation portal [insert link here]. After choosing their variant, customers will need to create a Ford Account and pay a set reservation fee of $1000 to the selected Authorised Ford EV Dealer.

“Online reservation not only adds a level of convenience to the vehicle purchase process, but also allows for the management of wait times based on reservation by series,” Winter said.

Mustang Mach-E forms an important part of Ford’s electrified future in Australia, with a plan to launch at least five electrified vehicles Down Under by the end of 2024.

The Escape is actually a comfortable small to mid-sized SUV that looks quite stylish and is quite pleasant inside.

The front leather seats have electric adjustment and lumbar support for the driver, smart phone connectivity and wireless charging, Head up display and a host of other little luxuries that make daily driving better.

The engine is a 2.5L hybrid petrol engine with a 14.4KWH (kilo watt hour) battery. It produces a combined output of 167kW and drives the front wheels through a CVT.

Overall the real world distance of the EV mode is about 45-50km, this is enough for my daily drive, but the hybrid petrol engine allows excellent economy without any range anxiety.

Driving the Escape is easy. You can select from four different modes to select when and how to use the EV only power.

The surprise is the price. It’s actually well priced from $54,440 plus the usual costs and is a good entry point into the world or electric driving. It is however substantially more expensive than the normal petrol Escape.

More Ford Escape ST-Line PHEV details

The Escape PHEV is Ford Australia’s first EV offering. Following the launch of Escape in late 2020, the 2022 PHEV completes the Escape line-up, giving customers more options in the mid-size SUV segment.

This is the first step for Ford Australia in introducing at least five electrified vehicles by the end of 2024.

The Escape PHEV delivers the driving range and freedom offered by a traditional internal combustion engine alongside the efficiency and refinement of an electric powertrain.

The power-split architecture combines a 2.5L four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, electric motor, and generator with a 14.4kWh lithium-ion battery, for a combined 167kW of power. With a combined fuel economy figure of 1.5L/100km and 33g/km of CO2 ¹ Ford’s first PHEV in Australia will deliver electric driving range in excess of 50 kilometres.

The battery can be charged using a passenger-side front guard mounted charging port and is automatically replenished on the move using regenerative charging technology that captures the kinetic energy normally lost during braking.

Drivers can choose when and how to deploy battery power using four different modes: EV Auto, EV Now, EV Later and EV Charge.

When the vehicle is in EV Now mode, and the battery reaches its lowest state-of-charge, Escape PHEV will automatically revert to EV Auto mode, supplementing the petrol engine power with electric motor assistance.

Ford owner benefits

Escape PHEV will be backed by Ford’s five-year, unlimited kilometre factory warranty, with the electric motor and high-voltage system parts, including the battery, covered by an eight-year/160,000km (whichever comes first) warranty.

Escape PHEV eligible owners can take advantage of all the Ford service benefits on offer, such as a Service Loan Car, Auto Club Membership including National Roadside Assistance as well as Sat Nav Map Updates. With service intervals every 15,000 km/12 months, eligible Escape PHEV owners will pay a maximum of $299³ per A & B scheduled services for the first four services up to 4 years/60,000km (whichever comes first).

Ford will soon introduce the van for which small businesses have been waiting. The all-new E-Transit Custom, the all-electric version van designed from the ground up to deliver new levels of productivity to customers in the one-tonne van segment. Continuing to build on Ford’s reputation as a commercial vehicle leader in Australia, the E-Transit Custom forms part of the brand’s plan for at least five electrified vehicles in showrooms by the end of 2024.

Ford brought the global power of its research, engineering and software capabilities to bear on E-Transit Custom, combining advanced electric vehicle technology and services to help businesses work more effectively, and simplify the transition to electric vehicles.

Inspired by insights from small and medium businesses, E-Transit Custom offers innovative customer experiences based on cloud connectivity and digital technologies.

Next-generation battery technology enables a targeted range of 380 km¹ and 124kW fast-charging ability. E-Transit Custom will deliver outstanding performance for a range of customer needs.

As a great optional feature, the cab is also a business hub, with a flexible workspace including smart features like a steering wheel that tilts to become an ergonomic holder for laptops and tablets.

The digital innovation is combined with no-compromise load carrying and capability. E-Transit Custom delivers a 100 mm lower load floor for easier access. Independent rear suspension and motor power help deliver a new level of driving experience for customers.

E-Transit All-electric power with uncompromised capability

E-Transit Custom’s capable new EV powertrain was designed to help small businesses and independent tradespeople – who previously relied on diesel powertrains to support their business needs – to make the switch to electric.

“Our customers made Transit Custom the most popular commercial vehicle in Europe, and we’ve listened to those customers for well over 50 years,” said Jim Farley, president and CEO, Ford Motor Company. “The new E-Transit Custom was designed and engineered to meet their needs – a Transit for the new era, but one that can still get its hands dirty when a job needs doing.”

E-Transit Custom’s 400-volt, 74 kWh useable battery pack uses advanced 81.2 Ah pouch cells shared with the Ford F-150 Lightning. The battery enables a targeted range of up to 380 km¹. The battery’s direct-to-body mounting improves durability and reduces weight for optimum range.

Australian-spec vehicles will offer a 160-kW motor that delivers 415 Nm of torque. The drive motor is fitted directly to the vehicle’s rear floor, removing the need for a dedicated subframe, and is rotated 90 degrees to maximise load space and reduce weight and complexity.

E-Transit Custom uses a vapour-injected heat pump technology to heat and cool the cabin, fitted as standard to all vehicles. This new system is designed to deliver improved energy efficiency for optimum driving range.

A new brake-by-wire system enables increased range and delivers one-pedal driving capability. The system blends friction braking with regenerative braking that harvests energy during deceleration to top up the battery for extra driving range. Drivers can stop the van without using the brake pedal when in one-pedal drive mode. The system is designed to use the friction brakes frequently enough to prevent the discs from rusting or pitting.

E-Transit Charging for easy energy management

E-Transit Custom’s 11 kW AC three-phase onboard charger is capable of fully recharging the battery in 7.2 hours, so customers will be able recharge overnight after a shift.

E-Transit Custom also supports DC fast charging up to 124kW for a 15-80 per cent recharge in 41 minutes. A new charge profile front-loads the energy to enable quick, useful top-ups; in lab testing, the system delivered almost 38 km of range in just 5 minutes using a 124kW charger.

Deep insights deliver a flexible ‘office’ experience

Small businesses use their vans’ cabs as offices and canteens every day, and deep customer engagement from human-centred design lab D-Ford has made E-­Transit Custom better than ever at serving as both. A new tilting steering wheel headlines the Mobile Office option pack and can become an ergonomic stand for tablets and laptops as well as a flat-topped table to make writing and lunch breaks more comfortable.

E-Transit New platform, new level of customer focus

Every small business’ van is their billboard. E-Transit Custom’s confident stance, rebalanced proportions and full LED exterior lighting with distinctive light bar sets a new design benchmark for one-tonne vans. To maximise range, the flat floor, unique honeycomb grille, wind-cheating wheel designs and even rear light cluster shapes were developed using more than 800 different aerodynamic simulations, delivering a CdA improvement of more than 10 per cent compared to the previous-generation Transit Custom.

The load floor has been lowered by 100 mm compared to the outgoing Transit Custom, to make loading cargo and accessing the cab easier. Engineers comprehensively analysed packaging, materials, safety and weight to deliver an architecture that integrates the battery into the load floor above the sill flange, eliminating the need for separate crash structures. Other underbody components are “shrink-wrapped” around the battery for optimum space and weight efficiency.

As a long wheelbase panel van with a maximum load length of 3,450 mm, E-Transit Custom offers load volumes of 6.8 cubic metres, or 9.0 cubic metres with the high roof option.

As on the larger E-Transit, all E-Transit Custom vans are fitted with semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension to contribute towards the lower floor height and to improve steering precision, handling and traction. The front wheels and strut towers have also been moved further forward, resulting in improved foot space and footrests for occupants in the front, as well as a shorter front overhang for more confident parking and manoeuvring.

E-Transit Custom’s standard suite of driver assistance systems include Pre-Collision Assist, Lane-Keeping System, Driver Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Assist, Wrong Way Alert, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera.

High-tech interior suits every vocation

E-Transit Custom offers a more spacious cab and increased secure storage compared to the outgoing model. The column-mounted gear shifter, electronic handbrake and “squircle” steering wheel combine to help cross-cab access – a valuable feature for drivers who park in tight areas and want to avoid getting out into live traffic.

Every E-Transit Custom is fitted with a 13-inch landscape touchscreen angled towards the driver for ease of use, as well as Ford’s advanced SYNC 4 communication and infotainment system.

Ford designers went to such lengths when considering how owners would use E-Transit Custom that even the grains on materials used in the cabin and load area are designed to use textures that avoid trapping dirt and water, giving the best balance between offering a firm footing for wet or muddy boots and enabling heavy items to slide in and out easily.

As van drivers often occupy the cabin alone, a new Driver Focus Mode option uses sensors to direct airflow only to occupied seats. An intelligent windscreen monitors temperature and humidity, and automatically makes small heat and airflow changes to proactively keep the windscreen clear for improved efficiency and ease of use.

All Transit Custom variants will be built by Ford Otosan – Ford’s joint venture in Turkey.

But improved battery performance and management started to show promise and Tesla made electric cars sexy with incredible acceleration.

The next stage of their growing acceptance has been in motor racing and now Ford has shown an electric Mustang on the drag strip.

They have held a match race between their hotted up 5.2 litre supercharged V8 petrol Mustang and a hotted up electric model at the NHRA Nationals in Indianapolis.

The petrol car won by a whisker but not before the electric car showed its potential by lifting the front wheels off the ground when it started its run.

The electric Mustang is rated at 1,044 and finished just three 100^th of a second behind.

Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have agreed to support a harmonized single-port fast charging approach – called DC-fast charging with a Combined Charging System – for use on electric vehicles in Europe and the United States. Live charging demonstrations will be conducted during the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 (EVS26) May 6-9.

The combined charging system integrates one-phase AC-charging, fast three-phase AC-charging, DC-charging at home and ultra-fast DC-charging at public stations into one vehicle inlet. This will allow customers to charge at most existing charging stations regardless of power source and may speed more affordable adoption of a standardized infrastructure.

The International Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has chosen the Combined Charging System as the fast-charging methodology for a standard that incrementally extends the existing Type 1-based AC-charging. The standard is to be officially published this summer. ACEA, the European association of vehicle manufacturers has also selected the Combined Charging System as its AC/DC-charging interface for all new vehicle types in Europe beginning in 2017.

The charging system design was based on the collaborative review and analysis of existing charging strategies, the ergonomics of the connector and preferences of U.S. and European customers. The Combined Charging System was developed for all international vehicle markets and creates a uniform standard with identical electrical systems, charge controllers, package dimensions and safety mechanisms.

The system maximizes capability for integration with future smart grid developments through common broadband communication methods regardless of the global location of the charging system. The combined charging approach will reduce development and infrastructure complexity, improve charging reliability, reduce the total cost-of-ownership for end customers and provide low maintenance costs.

Commercially available combined charging stations are projected to be available later this year. All committed OEMs have vehicles in development which will use the Combined Charging System. First vehicles using this technology will be launched to the market in 2013.
