Hybrid variants Design

The Hybrid variants carry over the petrol C5’s distinct exterior design, but receives unique 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The same applies to the interior with all variants coming standard with dual 12.3-inch display screens (instrument cluster & multimedia touchscreen), synthetic leather seats with front seats heating, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Chery’s intelligent voice command.

Under the skin is where the key differences lay with these C5s utilising a series-parallel hybrid system, which combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous electric motor.

Together, the combined output figures of 165kW/295Nm are sent to the front wheels through a single-speed dedicated Hybrid Transmission.

Fuel usage is rated at 4.9L/100km on the combined cycle while only emitting 111g/km of CO2.

Like all Chery products, safety is at the core of the C5 Hybrid, which comes equipped with a large array of smart and passive safety features. Sportage Hybrid added for 2026 Sportage 

The updated Sportage line-up advances Kia’s growing range of hybrid models with the introduction of all-wheel drive Hybrid variants.

As with the existing diesel powertrain, 1.6T Petrol variants (SX+ and GT-Line) are now matched with an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The four trim level range continues as with the outgoing model, divided into S, SX, SX+ and GT-Line.

Exterior design

The new Sportage’s front end features multiple refreshed design elements that evolve the ‘Opposites United’ philosophy, including front bumper design, vertically stacked star map headlights, bold indicator lights and a proud new grille.

Taking design cues from the Sorento, the new Sportage stylishly cements its place as part of the modern Kia range.

The rear design of the new Sportage has been subtly tweaked to appear more contemporary, with redesigned tail-light graphics and revised rear bumper elements that enhance its overall rugged appearance while complementing the new signature front lighting design.

All four trim levels feature new alloy wheel designs, with the hybrid GT-Line featuring a unique 18-inch design compared to the 19-inch wheels fitted to petrol/diesel GT-Line variants.

Wolf Grey and Heritage Blue also now join the range as two new premium paint options.

Interior design

All 2026 Sportage variants feature a redesigned two-spoke steering wheel, enhancing the interior with a modern and contemporary look.

Additionally, a 12.3-inch multimedia display is now fitted to all variants, which steps up to the latest Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) technology.

Comfort and convenience

This ccNC technology brings Kia Connect connected services to the Sportage for the first time.

While the government is trying to force everyone to drive electric cars, Toyota has made a brave, but intelligent choice. 

The move means that Corolla and Camry sedans and the Corolla Cross, RAV4 and Kluger SUVs are now 100-per-cent HEV for customer orders.

This expands Toyota’s HEV-only family to nine models. Joining Yaris Cross SUV, Corolla and Yaris hatches, and new-generation C-HR SUV. GR models continue unchanged as they are not offered with a hybrid alternative.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said this landmark development will accelerate a sales trend that has seen hybrid sales at record levels.

Consumer demand for HEV

“Toyota has been implementing our HEV strategy over an extended period. And remains committed to innovating across a diverse array of powertrains. Which is the essence of our multi-pathway approach to decarbonisation,” Mr Hanley said.

“This approach was central to global decisions, made in the earliest planning stages. That the 2024 new-generation C-HR and Camry models would be offered exclusively with hybrid powertrains,” he said.

“Around the same time, consumer demand in Australia for hybrid models was rising consistently. Including in 2020 when our overall hybrid share near-doubled to more than one-quarter of our total sales. And it has continued to grow ever since.

“Faced with this surging demand, we were confident in the future of HEV as the dominant powertrain of choice for most passenger cars and SUVs, which led us to make decisions that would ultimately impact on sales of petrol-only models.”

Mr Hanley said ongoing developments, including the upcoming mandated new-vehicle efficiency standard, confirmed the foresight of Toyota’s strategy.

Toyota Hybrid history over two decades

“Toyota has more than two decades of experience in batteries, motors and other electrification technologies with recognised benefits for fuel efficiency and emissions.

“We have also made significant local investments to educate consumers and promote broad acceptance and demand for hybrid-electric vehicles.

“As a result, we are seeing more Australian motorists than ever embracing the practicality and smooth performance of this technology, as well as the fuel-saving benefits and lower CO2 tailpipe emissions compared with equivalent petrol-only cars.¹

“Our HEV share reached a record 33.5 per cent last year and has jumped to 46.6 per cent in the first five months of this year, including 48.9 per cent in May.

“So far this year, our total HEV sales have more than doubled to 46,821 vehicles compared with the same period last year with all models continuing to attract strong demand..

“At the same time, we have worked closely with our production teams in Japan to increase supply, which has substantially reduced wait times on popular models like RAV4 Hybrid.

“Overall, we have now sold more than 430,000 HEVs in Australia since we launched the original Prius in October 2001.”

With a driveaway price of $41,000 The Jolion H2 HEV is $8,000 more than their non-hybrid Ultra version. You can certainly get cheaper small non-hybrid SUVs from MG, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and even Mazda but the level of equipment in the Haval hybrid is quite substantial.

As a Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) SUV the 450 brings the best of all worlds, especially with the electronic AWD capability. This means up to a bit over 80km in fully electric mode, and a very economical hybrid back up mode.

The beauty of the PHEV is that most daily trips around the city are often less than the 80km, so it’s possible to drive for the majority of the time on electric mode alone. Plugging in nightly though may prove a problem for some people.

The backup hybrid removes any range anxiety and allows for longer trips without worry. The F Sport is smooth, quiet and comfortable to drive and I would guess most buyers would be a couple so its big enough.

As it’s an F Sport, it is full of little styling, comfort and luxury features that buyers want. That’s a good thing because at nearly $90,000 plus the usual costs it’s expensive.

Lexus is definitely making the most of its hybrid engines and the PHEV adds another benefit to the range.

Lexus NX450h+ drive experience

EV Priority mode ensures the electric motors will power the NX 450h+ even when the accelerator is fully pressed, continuing to operate solely on electric power for a maximum amount of time.

In Auto EV/HV mode, the petrol engine will only activate when the accelerator is fully pressed or in situations that require brisk acceleration, for example during high-speed overtaking.

In HV mode, the powertrain emulates the balanced performance of the renowned hybrid-electric Lexus systems, maintaining a level of battery charge by starting and stopping the petrol engine as required.

Battery Charging mode engages the petrol engine to help recover charge if it drops below the level required for EV-only driving, for maximum driving flexibility and assistance in ensuring situations such as city driving can then utilise electric power.

Drivers will also be able to choose from performance-oriented drive modes that control the powertrain, transmission, suspension and vehicle stability control to best suit particular roads and a driver’s preferred driving style.

The Lexus NX 450h+ even further leverages the Lexus Driving Signature by enhancing the highly rigid and dynamic Global Architecture-K (GA-K) platform, complete with E-Four all-wheel-drive including variable torque distribution.

Using a range of sensors measuring G forces, yaw rate, speed and steering angle, the E-Four system can split the front-to-rear torque distribution in ratios between 100:0 and 20:80.

Combined with the standard Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) incorporating a firmer Sport S+ damping mode, the NX 450h+ provides a balance of ride comfort and refinement matched with direct steering and agile handling.

Bold and stylish design

The all-new Kia Niro features a bold and dynamic design inspired by Kia’s acclaimed ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy. Taking strong influence from the 2019 HabaNiro concept car, its stylish and bold crossover looks are combined with a high-tech two-tone body and optional contrasting C-Pillar.

The all-new Niro’s front-end features the latest evolution of Kia’s signature Tiger Face, which extends from the bonnet to the rugged bumper below. Striking ‘heartbeat’ daytime running lights (DRLs) add to the unique yet contemporary look, while a bold skid plate and cladding enhance the car’s rugged character.

The side profile combines clean character lines with a bold Aero C-Pillar, a highly distinctive shape with an aerodynamic vent helping to improve overall efficiency levels. These measures have enabled the all-new Kia Niro to achieve an impressive drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.29. The meeting of the distinctive C-Pillars with the striking boomerang-shaped LED taillights further add to the vehicle’s sporty stance.

At the rear, these LED taillights sit alongside uncomplicated surface treatments for a concise and aerodynamic styling combination, while the heartbeat-shaped rear reflector, rugged skid plate and lower bumper help to complement the all-new Niro’s front-end design.

The second-generation Niro offers a choice of eight expressive exterior colours across the range including Cityscape Green which is new to Kia’s colour pallet, Snow White Pearl, Aurora Black Pearl, Mineral Blue, Interstellar Grey, Runway Red, Steel Grey and Clear White, all sporting a gloss black lower cladding (excluding EV GT-Line in Snow White Pearl).

For the first time, the Niro range provides options for personalisation with a choice of contrasting C-Pillar colours in the GT-Line trims; Cityscape Green and Mineral Blue can be combined with a gloss black C-Pillar (HEV and EV GT-Line), while the EV GT-Line in Snow White Pearl can be paired with a C-Pillar and cladding in Steel Grey.

Innovative and minimalist interior

Premium and eco-friendly materials create a minimalist contemporary feel while modern digital displays and interior controls, have been optimally placed to further enhance the user-friendly operating experience.

The entry HEV S comes with a 4.2” Multi-Function LCD cluster. The simplistic digital display has been designed to replace analogue gauges to maintain a high-tech image across the entire range. The EV S trim incorporates the 10.25” digital cluster with an 8” AV touch screen.

The GT-Line trim in both HEV and EV variants provides a high-tech panoramic high-definition digital display screen that integrates both the instrument cluster (10.25”) and infotainment features (+10.25”) in one streamlined package. The system has been designed to be easy to use with pin sharp graphics and a highly intuitive layout, enabling users to personalise, access and operate the vehicle’s connectivity, usability and functionality features with ease and confidence.

Located below the centre screen lies an integrated touch sensitive infotainment and climate control system that removes clutter for a clean and coherent look and ensures front seat occupants can access these important controls without the need to scroll through multiple menus.

Within easy reach of the driver lies the stylish centre-console incorporating a modern look with a high-gloss black surface finish. Here, the driver can operate the all-new Niro’s electronic dial-type shift lever (HEV GT-Line & EV S/GT-Line), the design of which saves space and is convenient and intuitive to operate. A variable large-capacity cupholder tray and a wireless Qi charging pad (GT-Line) are also close to hand.

The front passenger premium relaxation seat in the EV GT-Line can recline at the touch of a button while parked or charging to enable the passenger to relax in supreme comfort. Across the range, the front seats incorporate convenient rear-mounted coat hangers and USBC charging.

The all-new Niro’s dimensions have grown over its predecessor, with a length measuring 4,420mm, a width of 1,825mm, a height of 1,545mm HEV/1,570mm EV, and a wheelbase of 2,720mm (increased length 65mm HEV/45mm EV, width 20mm and wheelbase 20mm).

By repositioning the Niro’s 12V battery out of the wheelhouse and instead integrating it alongside the high-voltage battery at the bottom of the rear seats, boot load capacity for the Niro HEV model reaches an impressive 425 litres (VDA), up 15 litres over its predecessor.

As a clear statement of Kia’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, the all-new Niro showcases recycled materials inside the cabin. The headlining is made from recycled PET materials, the seats are made from Bio PU with Tencel from eucalyptus tree fibres, and BTX* free paint is used on the door panels to minimise the impact on the environment and reduce waste.

Powertrains and local tuning deliver an efficient driving experience

The all-new Kia Niro is available with two highly efficient FWD electrified powertrains, Hybrid Electric (HEV) and full Electric (EV), and both variants are available with a choice of two specification options: the base S trim and the newly appointed flagship GT-Line trim.

A highly efficient Smartstream 1.6-litre GDI engine featuring improved cooling, friction and combustion technologies helps power the HEV models. The powerplant ensures competitive fuel efficiency, with the all-new Niro HEV capable of achieving 4.0 litres/100 kms combined fuel consumption.

The four-cylinder unit produces a maximum output of 77.2kW along with 144 Nm of torque. When combined with the 32kW permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, the HEV model produces a combined maximum power output of 104kW and 265 Nm of torque.

The 1.6-litre GDI engine is mated to the second-generation 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (6DCT) that has been carefully engineered and optimised to increase efficiency and reduce weight.

The 64.8kWh electric option is paired with a Single Speed Transmission (reduction gear), provides 150kW power and 255Nm of torque, and a single charge driving range of 460 kilometres.

The EV variant of the all-new Niro combines its outstanding 460km (WLTP) range with a top speed of 167km/h and 0-100km/h taking just 7.8 seconds. Furthermore, Niro EV’s low drag coefficient of 0.29 ensures minimum aerodynamic resistance and maximum energy efficiency.

Topping up the EV’s 64.8kWh lithium-ion polymer battery from 10-80 per cent takes just 43 minutes with a suitable DC rapid charger. The all-new Niro comes with a standard CCS2 charging port for added convenience. AC and DC charging times for the all-new Niro have improved over the outgoing model.

Kia’s smart regenerative braking system enables drivers to choose from a series of regeneration levels to easily slow the car and recuperate kinetic energy to maximise driving range. The system can calculate the amount of regeneration required using radar and road gradient information. The system allows the car to harvest the maximum amount of energy from its brakes while bringing the vehicle to a gentle halt.

The next-generation Niro EV gains in braked towing capacity which is now 750kg (previously 300kg) opening up the possibilities for zero-emission adventures. The HEV maximum braked towing capacity remains at a capable 1,300kg.

Tuned for Australian roads

The all-new Kia Niro has undergone an extensive local ride and handling program to ensure it is suitable for Australia’s unique road conditions and driving styles. This is also Kia Australia’s first full ride & handling program since the start of the pandemic with the opportunity to tune the MDPS (steering) map.

The result, is car like handling with nice and flat body control and minimal roll coming into corners, providing driver confidence. A significant improvement over the outgoing model and comparable to European benchmarks.

Impressive safety and convenience features

Safety has been a top priority during the development of the all-new Niro. As a result, the vehicle’s high-strength lightweight body features a multi-load front impact structure to ensure passengers benefit from outstanding levels of safety in the event of a front-end collision.

 The active and passive safety credentials of the all-new Kia Niro range have also been boosted over the outgoing model adding Centre Side Airbag, Multi Collision Braking (MCB), Electronic Chromic Mirror (ECM), Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist (RCCA) and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA) as standard across all trim levels.

Other standard safety features include Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), High Beam Assist (HBA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), Rear View Monitor (RVM), Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA), and Rear Parking Sensors.

GT-Line trims gain Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist Reverse (PCA-R), Safe Exit Assist, Front & Rear Parking Sensors, Power Child Lock and the Emergency Service ‘eCall’ through the Kia Connect functions.

Kia Connect and convenience features fit seamlessly into everyday life

To suitably symbolise the change to GT-Line as the new top trim, both HEV and EV GT-Line variants offer an extensive list of upgraded convenience and comfort features such as Heated and Ventilated Seats (Front), Heated Steering Wheel, 10.25″ Digital Driver Cluster, Head-Up Display (HUD), Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA-Entry), Smart Power  Tailgate, Wireless Qi Device Charger , Telematics (Kia Connect) and Smart Key  with Push Button Start.

The EV GT-Line, representing the flagship model of the range, also receives a Power Tilt and Sliding Sunroof, Front Passenger Premium Relaxation Seat, 8 Speaker Harmon/Kardon Premium Sound System and Exterior Vehicle to Load Adaptor (V2L).

Interior V2L is standard across the all-new Niro EV range, a function offering significant charging flexibility. An Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) enables up to 3.6kW of power to be discharged from the vehicle’s battery. Inside the cabin, a handy charging port located under the rear seats allows passengers to charge devices from the vehicle’s battery without the need for additional adapters.

GT-Line models come with both the interior and exterior V2L function. The adapter plug enables the car to charge anything from external domestic appliances to other EVs (with a trickle charger).

 The all-new Niro includes an extensive range of high-tech features designed to make life easier both behind the wheel and away from the car, as this is the first Kia model available in Australia to offer Kia’s Connected Car Services system; Kia Connect.

Kia Connect provides customer benefits in safety and security, control, connectivity, and LIVE services by using telematics to transfer real time data such as weather and traffic information, charging station information and more.

An advanced Voice Car Control system featuring Natural Voice Recognition technology allows occupants to control key vehicle systems such as temperature and audio settings with ease.

The Kia Connect smartphone app allows users to connect with their vehicle remotely. Drivers can sync calendars, plan journeys with online navigation and access onboard features including live traffic alerts and real-time weather forecasts. Valet Mode enables customers to monitor their vehicle remotely when it is being driven by another user, providing added peace of mind.

We’ve driven the Hybrid and PHEV over the last few weeks, so here are our thoughts:

Niro exterior:

Niro lacks the road presence of Sorento and Seltos. There, I’ve said it. Well someone had to!

Niro is front wheel drive its the familiar tiger-nose grille, and has a strong resemblance to the previous generation Sorento.

Sadly, only the Sport variant gets LED headlights.

Niro Cabin:

Niro feels cosy, with mood lighting is adjustable to your favourite. The colour scheme is all dark and moody, intones of black and grey.

The infotainment screen sits flush with the dash. There is DAB radio, but the wireless Apple CarPlay has been a little moody. It also connects by USB, but occasionally the connection either fails.

Sound is very good as befitting a car of this price range.

Buttons and switches are backlit, and well laid out.

Interior space is well used with rear seat riders having enough room for shorter trips. Rear seat warnings appear on the dash to make sure you don’t leave someone napping when they shouldn’t be.

Niro Drive:

Ride is quite smooth. Like all cars with big batteries, there is a certain intangible feeling about them the handling.

Both the EV and PHEV have a small electric motor between the engine and 6-speed DCT. Power is 104kw and 265Nm, which is more than enough for city use.

Niro feels subdued, but slip the DCT in to Sport, and it really comes to life. The PHEV makes the best use of the stored energy. After the 50-60km of range depleted, the PHEV operates like a regular hybrid. Remember, hybrids charge themselves with relying on wall chargers.

Highway speeds make great use the driver aids such as lane assist and active blind spot monitor. You should plan overtaking by selecting the Sport mode in the gear lever.

A 6-Speed DCT is unusual in an EV, and is much preferable to the dreadful CVT we normally find.

COVID prevented local tuning for this model. Instead, KIA has used the European/Korean tuning, which takes a softer approach. The new model is due in a year and will have Graham Gambold’s sporty edge.

We mainly did  city driving, with only brief freeway speeds of 100kph. Niro is slightly noisier than Seltos or Sportage, even in EV mode.

Fuel economy is good, with 3.8L/100k for the hybrid, and 1.3L/100k in the PHEV. The latter no doubt includes regular wall charging. If a buyer charges each night, most of the time will be spent in EV mode. In that case, KIA suggests running the petrol tank down at least every 6 months.

As in most hybrids, excess energy is stored in the batteries to be used later.

Finally, there is a space-saver spare for the PHEV and hybrid. I have a strong aversion to repair kits which never seem to work.

Conclusion:

With on-road costs, the EV tops out the range at $70,990 (in NSW) and that is a shedload of money. Our Sport PHEV is $53,990, which is $3,500 over the MRRP.

While Niro has a neutral feel on the road, we would like to try it with Australian tuning. We judged  the PHEV to be the best proposition and balance between price and performance. In an ideal world, the EV would not be $15,000 more.

Australian government is against any kind of zero emissions technology and will stand in front of it whenever it can. Most other countries in the developed world acknowledge the importance of reducing pollution of all kinds, but without Australian government help, Australian buyers will continue to pay the price of their negligence.
