Repositioned IONIQ 5 model ranges make Hyundai’s popular medium EVs even more enticing, with prices reduced by $8,000 – excluding IONIQ 5 N.

The price reductions also bring minor specification changes across model ranges.

A revised  range – excluding 5 N – makes driving a leading-edge EV more accessible, now starting from $68,200. The Premium N Line variant also receives Leather sport seats with N Logos (replacing the previous suede seats).

The revised  ranges are available to order now, with arrival into dealerships commencing from June. All quoted prices are Manufacturer List Price.

Physically, the IONIQ 5 plays a brilliant optical illusion. In photos, it looks like a compact 1980s hatchback, but in person, it is a massive, 4.6-metre-long family crossover with a wheelbase longer than a Toyota LandCruiser. Arriving with an indicative drive-away price of around $76,200 for this base trim, it isn’t cheap. However, with the upgraded 84 kWh battery now standard across the range, this is arguably the most complete, head-turning, and ultra-fast-charging family EV on the market.

What does the Hyundai IONIQ 5 2026 look like?

The IONIQ 5 remains one of the most striking cars on the road that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie. At 4655mm long and 1890mm wide, it has a planted, wide stance with incredibly sharp geometric creases running down the sides.

The highlight of the exterior is the retro-inspired “Parametric Pixel” LED lighting at the front and rear, giving it an unmistakable 8-bit digital signature. Crucially for the 2026 model, Hyundai has subtly redesigned the front and rear bumpers for better aerodynamics and finally, mercifully, added a rear windscreen wiper.

What is the Hyundai IONIQ 5 2026 like inside?

The interior is designed around a “Living Space” theme, taking full advantage of the dedicated electric platform’s completely flat floor. The cabin feels immensely airy and open. Eco-friendly materials are used throughout, including recycled PET bottles and plant-based yarns, yet it all feels premium and robust.

The Elite trim features excellent, highly adjustable seats. A brilliant 2026 update is the revised, sportier 3-spoke steering wheel and a reworked centre console that finally brings physical shortcut buttons for your seat heating, ventilation, and parking cameras.

Storage

Because there is no transmission tunnel, the IONIQ 5 features the “Universal Island”—a massive centre console that can slide back and forth, allowing the driver to easily slide across to the passenger side to exit if parked tightly.

Instead of a traditional drop-down glovebox, it features a unique sliding drawer that holds significantly more. Under the clamshell bonnet, the RWD model offers a 57-litre “frunk,” which is just big enough to neatly store your charging cables away from your groceries.

Rear seat and boot space

The IONIQ 5 boasts a gargantuan 3000mm wheelbase, which translates to true limousine-like legroom for rear passengers. The rear seats are electrically adjustable and can slide forward or backward to prioritize either passenger legroom or boot space.

The boot is an expansive and flat 520 litres. While the raked rear window cuts slightly into tall item storage, it is extremely wide. Fold the rear seats down, and you get a cavernous 1580 litres of cargo space.

Technology and connectivity

Stepping inside the 2026 IONIQ 5 introduces you to the latest ‘ccNC’ software architecture. Visually, the dashboard is clean and airy, dominated by dual 12.3-inch displays seamlessly integrated into a single white-bezel panel. Functionally, the new system is blazingly fast and, thankfully, brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the board.

Complementing this digital array is the newly revised steering wheel and the addition of the much-requested physical buttons on the centre console. Consequently, you can keep your eyes on the road; instead of tapping through three touchscreen menus just to turn on your heated seats on a winter morning.

Beyond the screens, the tech is genuinely life-enhancing as it retains its famous V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability, turning the car into a massive rolling power bank.

Engine and drivetrain

For 2026, Hyundai streamlined the range and gave every model the big battery. This Elite RWD is powered by an 84 kWh battery feeding a single electric motor on the rear axle. It produces a very healthy 168 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque.

The undisputed trump card of the IONIQ 5 is its 800-volt architecture (a feature usually reserved for Porsche and Audi). This allows it to plug into a 350kW ultra-rapid charger and pull over 230 kW of power, meaning a 10% to 80% charge takes a mind-blowing 18 minutes. The official WLTP range is an excellent 570 kilometres (on 19-inch wheels).

What’s the Hyundai IONIQ 5 2026 like to drive?

The IONIQ 5 is the ultimate cruising machine. Because the heavy battery is mounted low in the floor and the wheelbase is so long, it irons out Australian country roads with a luxurious, planted composure.

With a 0-100 km/h time of roughly 7.5 seconds, the RWD Elite isn’t a sports car, but the instant torque makes it feel effortless and sprightly around town. The steering is light and predictable, and the cabin insulation is superb, making it a phenomenally quiet place to spend a long road trip.

Safety features

The IONIQ 5 carries a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. The 2026 model is packed with Hyundai’s ‘SmartSense’ active safety tech:

• Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (with Junction Turning/Crossing)

At around $84,000 drive-away, it commands a premium price, but it backs it up with premium 800V technology, jaw-dropping design, and a lounge-like interior that genuinely makes your daily commute better. If you have the budget, this remains one of the finest electric vehicles on sale today.

The online pre-sale on the Hyundai Australia website will open on September 15 for 12 hours, starting at midday and running through until midnight AEST.

It will only be available to pre-order on this date, which coincides with N Birthday – the day the N brand was unveiled for the first time, at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Customers will be able to configure IONIQ 5 N in their combination of options and exterior colour before securing their order with a $2,000 deposit, with initial deliveries scheduled for Q1 2024.

Pre-sale customers will receive a special gift package which includes a Hyundai N x Pelican set featuring two cases and a torch, as well as additional N merchandise, with a total value of around $1,000.

IONIQ 5 N versions

IONIQ 5 N will be offered in a single highly equipped variant at $111,000 (MLP) with a choice of two options: Vision Roof at $2,000 and Matte Paint at $1,000.

Vehicles will be built to order in each customer’s chosen combination of option(s) and exterior colour – there is no pre-configured specification.

The palette includes Performance Blue Matte, Performance Blue, Abyss Black, Cyber Gray, Ecotronic Gray, Atlas White Matte, Atlas White, Gravity Gold Matte and Soultronic Orange.

Detailed Australian specifications for IONIQ 5 N will be announced closer to launch.

N E-GMP platform

A technological tour de force developed on the E-GMP platform, IONIQ 5 N features WRC-inspired integrated drive axle all-wheel drive with dual electric motors delivering a combined 478 kW with N Grin Boost applied.

High-performance hardware includes electronically-controlled suspension, an electronic limited-slip rear differential (e-LSD), and forged 21-inch aluminium wheels wrapped in bespoke 275/35R21 Pirelli P-Zero tyres.

A quick-ratio steering rack and N-tuned brakes, featuring 400mm front discs clamped by four-piston monobloc calipers, further demonstrate track bred pedigree.

IONIQ 5 N’s exterior is headlined by an N Mask graphic fascia featuring air curtain and air flap apertures, a lip spoiler, and EV N-exclusive ‘Luminous Orange’ lower highlight which continues into the side skirts.

A wing-type rear spoiler, orange-accented rear diffuser and air outlet, plus an array of black trim parts complete its aggressive image.

The motorsport theme continues inside with N-branded interior elements including the newly designed N steering wheel, sports seats, scuff panels and metal pedals.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 looks like a hot hatch with a bright interior that focuses on using the space inside the vehicle

The new Kia EV6 is a more flowing design and while classified as an SUV has strong elements of a large sedan.

Both are available with the same one electric motor two-wheel drive or a two electric motor AWD

The base model EV6 AIR is listed at $68,000 while the base Ioniq 5 is listed at nearly $72,000.

The difference is in features. The Hyundai base model has extras such as

• Fully Automated Parking assist
• Driver Fatigue warning
• Side airbags and seat belt pretensioners for the rear passengers
• Ventilated rather than solid disc brakes on the front

One of the most obvious differences was the operation of the door handles.

In both cases they are flush with the door but in the Kia you had to press one end to get it to pivot out.

The Hyundai’s handles would automatically extend to be able to more easily open, whenever the car was unlocked.

One of the other advantages of this is that you could tell if the car was locked from a distance.

The shape of a vehicle can mean so much to a person from their own perspective.

I drove behind a KIA EV6 and had a flash of memory of the Citroen DS.

The rear with the small protrusions from the top of the roof, in the Citroen they were blinkers in the Kia that provide puddle lights. The windows and roof Even from the front with a bonnet that slopes down. The tail slops down a bit on the Kia although the line is broken by the rear airfoil.

The nose of the car sloping down also had a memory spike for me.

My artistic friend felt I was stretching the image a bit but then again he thought the Hyundai Ioniq 5, from directly front on, reminded him of the DeLorean!

I had the stylish and new IONIQ 5 as well as the neat Kona EV. Both with an estimated range of over 400km, both at the forefront of the EV push and both really nice to drive.

The IONIQ 5 is a purpose built Electric car that is designed for a family and comes in either a rear wheel drive or AWD version. It’s quirky and futuristic and above all quiet. I drove the AWD version and it certainly is stylish, packed with comfort, safety and luxury features and has an abundance of storage spaces.

The Kona electric is different it’s based on the smaller SUV Kona and is more traditional in its interior design and functionality.

For both cars there are choices of battery size, which also means different range availability.

When I was a kid we would often drive long distances of 1000km plus for family holidays. These cars are not designed for that type of driving. But would I have one for around city driving, where often the maximum distance driven a day is less than 100km. Yes I would, they are ideal for that and reduce localised emissions.

I would just have to clean out my garage so they fitted for charging

The long wheelbase and short overhangs give cabin a TARDIS-like feeling. 72.6Kwh of batteries forms a flat interior floor on which the furniture can be rearranged at will.

The front end is punctuated by pixelated LED lights, and the bumper has a hidden array that only comes on at night.

The first 240 were lassoed by lucky lads and lassies in only 2 hours. Buyers late off the mark will have to wait until next year.

IONIQ 5 Cabin:

The cabin is calm and clean, and extremely well designed.

Everything has a purpose, and materials are recycled, or able to be recycled. Even the hides tanned  in an “eco-friendly”. To compliment the white leather, is a white linen-look fabric looks like something from a modern club. The paint is eco friendly, and many of the processes have been made friendlier to the environment.

Both rows of seats are electric, there is a flat floor and sliding centre console, so passengers can to either to the either side to alight.

The full array of Hyundai assistance extends to the usual safety and driver aids, as well as fully automated parking. In driverless mode, you get out of the car and press the parking button. The car then moves into the parking bay you’ve selected.

Those driver and safety aids are crucial to a 5-Star rating. What’s more, the tech is easy to use. It doesn’t need big hugs every time you need it.

Compared to Tesla, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 cabin feels lighter, and more spacious, and unlike Tesla, there is Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

This is a car that acknowledges passengers are as important as the driver. All seats are heated and electrically adjusted, and the front seats add cooling as well. Finally, as well as 2 memory slots for the driver, there are 3 memories controlling all 5 seats. You can relax while you charge, by raising the ottoman on either or both of the front seats, turning them in to 1^st-class lie-flat beds.

It is all white and relaxing.

Charging:

Charging is something that we all should consider.

Our local shopping centre has many chargers, both free and paid. There are free 15w chargers, a 22w Tesla destination chargers, and some newly installed Chargefox 50w and 350w chargers.

It was easy enough to set up my Chargefox account. It needed only a couple of minutes putting in my first and last name, and credit card.

For an hour I following the instructions.

I went from charger to glove box and back again. My patience evaporated with each trip.  After a dozen times trying to start charging, I rang Chargefox helpdesk.

I was eager to test out my “World first patented ultra-fast 400V and 800V multi-charging technology,” and all I was getting was grief.

After a short wait, the agent put me on hold. After a short wait, the agent told me someone else had difficulty with an IONIQ 5. “Thanks for that,” I said. He then declared the problem was that the IONIQ 5 could not take a fast charge. “Cobblers,” I uttered. I informed him that I have my “World first patented ultra-fast 400V and 800V multi-charging technology” on board, and this very car had charged happily at other fast chargers.

I then called Hyundai.

It transpired that after much ado, the Hyundai people found that if you held the charger firmly into the car’s socket while starting the app with the other hand, the magnetic lock would then grip properly and charging will begin.

I did that, and it worked.

IONIQ 5 Drive

The charge rang up around 450 CO2-free kilometres. All Chargefox stations use power created with green power only.

Before you set off, there are buttons to get the chair where you want it. They are firm but extremely cosy.

A quick press of the “ON” button, brings the dash to life. The crystal clear 12” infotainment screen also fettles car settings. It works smoothly first time every time, and if you can work an iPhone, the IONIQ 5 is easy, with every menu making perfect sense.

In front of the driver is a second 12” screen in the same bleached-white theme. It the light and bright theme makes the cabin feel even more spacious and calming.

A column mounted gear stalk keeps the console free of clutter. Once on the move, activating i-peddle means the brake is rarely needed. Our rear-wheel-drive version had 160kw and 350Nm, which is more than enough get the Hundai up to highway speed in 7.4 seconds.

The ride is smooth, though tight mountain bends soon showcase the heft in the batteries. What feels light on the highway, suddenly gets heavy, fast. You feel it moving under you, and even thought the centre of gravity is low, you can’t work miracles with hundreds of kilos trying to pull you sideways.

Active steering is used by the Lane Keep Assist, Lane Trace Assist, and the remote parking assistant. The latter will park the car for you after you get ou, as previously mentioned. It goes without saying the accident prevention system will try to avoid a crash, or brake heavily if something unfortunate is imminent.

IONIQ 5 has everything a large petrol or diesel SUV has, and more. Most SUVs aren’t used to off-roading anyway.

Conclusion:

There is way too much about IONIQ 5 to mention here.

The exterior design is instantly recognisable, the cabin lives up to the claim of being truly beautiful, while being both comfortable and practical. There are clever gizmos, a great 5 year warranty, 12 month servicing at only $220 each ($804 for the 48mnth/60,000km service), and an excellent build quality. Hyundai and Genesis frequently top the JD Power surveys.

It trumps Tesla in every way possible.
