The Lexus UX is a stylish compact urban based SUV that has the full array of safety features. Inside it is typically Lexus, which means luxurious and well laid out. UX is comfortable more for two people as the rears seats are tight, but that’s probably the typical number anyway.

Fit and finish is excellent and heated seats are comfortable. The driver instruments and central screen easy to read but I’m not a fan of the mouse style touch pad, for the controls for the central screen.

The UX 250h comes with a 2.0-litre 131kW UX 250h regular hybrid petrol engine that drive through an AWD drivetrain and a CVT.

This provides enough driving zip for around town and will cruise easily on the freeway. Economy is excellent and we used around 5.0L/100k on our week long test. The UX was quiet and smooth to drive and is ideal as a city runabout and weekend getaway car.

Hybrid cars are often a better choice for buyers that want better economy without any range anxiety. Lexus and Toyota do hybrids as good as anyone in the market.

Priced from around $64,100 plus the usual costs it’s relatively well priced especially against the all-electric version.

Fit and finish is excellent and heated seats are comfortable. The driver instruments and central screen easy to read but I’m not a fan of the mouse style touch pad, for the controls for the central screen.

Recharging the  is simple and relatively quick, but as with all EVs you need a garage or somewhere undercover overnight and that’s a problem for a lot of people.

One thing I noticed was at full charge the range was only 250km or so and while my daily drive is around 50-80km and well covered, a weekend trip requires a bit of planning.

Priced from around $81,000 plus the usual costs its expensive when you consider that the Hybrid is some $21,000 cheaper along with excellent economy. It’s a high price to pay for a fully electric car.

Some more UX 300e thoughts

• Comfort is a feature in sitting and driving
• Quiet and smooth around town
• Its quick to charge overnight and the three year free Chargefox subscription is appreciated
• With a range of an indicated 250km its not ideal for weekends away, but ideal for daily around town driving
• Pleasantly responsive to accelerator inputs when underway and overtaking is easy
• Its packed with little luxuries I like
• I like the ‘roll on’ driving style with selectable regenerative braking
• I’m not an advocate of the ‘one pedal’ driving style and a milder regenerative braking suits my driving style
• Rear seats are cramped (as are most in this class of car)
• As many EVs are moving to a specific platform using an ICE platform limits functionality
• Having mentioned I’m not a fan of the mouse like pad I will mention it again
• Appreciation of looks and style is subjective, but I like it and it looks better in the flesh than in photos
• Boot space is ok and practical with the lip and tie down points
• Being part of the Lexus Encore program with loan vehicles will ameliorate the range anxiety for weekends away.
• Setting aside the range issue, I actually really enjoyed driving the UX 300e

With many of the latest technology features appearing in lower priced cars is it worth buying a luxury SUV? Are hybrids what they purport to be? Rob Fraser ponders these questions driving a Lexus

These questions were on my mind when we tested the Lexus NX 300h F Sport.

As soon as we started to drive the Lexus there was an familiarity about the experience that was comforting and the near $68,000 pricing is certainly not outrageous.  Lexus prides itself in providing prestige without going over the top in price. Something some European models could emulate.

I found the Hybrid excellent round town, where the nature of stop start driving is particularly suited to the dual engine configuration. On the freeway there was little difference, cruising at a constant rate doesn’t allow the hybrid to shine as much.  Overall the economy was about 5.7l/100k.

With stylish looks, packed with standard comfort and safety features and reasonably priced and with Lexus build quality, the NX 300 H F Sport is definitely worth a drive.
