Mazda CX – Mazda has introduced a series of enhancements across its Large Architecture SUV range, now delivering even more value through expanded standard equipment and revised pricing for the Mazda CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 models.

Mazda CX Models Simplified Pricing Structure

A simplified pricing structure for 2026 applies means 3.3L inline-six petrol and diesel variants are now priced equally across equivalent model grades. P50e Plug-in Hybrids, available exclusively on CX-60 and CX-80, have also been repriced and are now just $5,000 more than the equivalent G40e or D50e engine.

Customers now have greater flexibility to select the vehicle that best suits their lifestyle and driving needs without compromise, and can purchase a vehicle on preference alone – reinforcing Mazda’s commitment to choice and delivering exceptional value.

Headlining the equipment updates for 2026 is the addition and standardisation of the Sports Appearance Package on CX-90 GT grades. Black exterior trims replace chrome and extend to the signature wing, centre bumper guard, mirror caps, window mouldings, roof rails and side signature badging. The vehicle’s bold proportions are accentuated even further with 21-inch black alloy wheels that command road presence.

Safety updates

Safety in the Mazda CX-90 and CX-60 have been updated, now including Front Cross Traffic Brake (FCTB), and Cruising Traffic Support (CTS) with Driver Emergency Assist as standard, as well as the addition of Mazda Connected Services – already equipped in the CX-70 and CX-80.

New Colours

Both vehicles now sport a refreshed colour palette, with Polymetal Grey Metallic now available in lieu of Sonic Silver Metallic. Body colours for the CX-70 and CX-80 remain unchanged.

New models

Further strengthening the Mazda CX-80 range is the introduction of the Pure grade paired with Mazda’s 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D in-line six-cylinder engine, providing customers with an additional choice at the entry-point to the CX-80. This engine provides smooth, torque-rich performance with exceptional efficiency thanks to Mazda’s 48V M-Hybrid Boost, and pairs graciously with the practicality and versatility of the three-row CX-80.

Commenting on the updates, Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi said: “Our Large Architecture range already represents the very best of Mazda, combining Kodo design and exemplary craftsmanship with acclaimed Jinba Ittai driving dynamics.

“We’re now making the range even more compelling by increasing the value proposition and making each model more attainable than ever,” he added.

Mazda CX-60 – Mazda has launched its second model into the medium sized SUV segment. They already have the CX-5 which is placed in the “below $60,000” category.

The new CX-60 which comes with some new engines and mild hybrid power, represents Mazda’s unashamed push to premium vehicles.

It has three powertrain options (petrol, diesel, and PHEV) and three feature levels (Evolve, GT, and Azami).

CX-60 Exterior

The exterior is not adventurous in a category that has several manufacturers pushing the design envelope. There is, however, enough identification to pick that it is a Mazda (particularly from the front). It looks refined, but it is not a standout design either.

The vehicle, for example does not make use of modern lighting to create strip lights across the front or rear of the vehicles.

From the side it has a simple horizontal waistline crease (very slightly curved) but not some of the more aggressive, sharp angles and creases that other brands use to give a wedge-shaped appearance.

The overall appearance of the rear of the car is very typically the station wagon look and not easily differentiated from many other similar cars in the category.

There are seven colour to choose from. The standout colour is “Soul Red Crystal”.

CX-60 Interiors

The interior designs are mature in their looks, even plush if you take up some of the option packs.

The top spec Azami model gets the most distinctive interior colour choices including:

Dark black leather – Luxury Package

Tan Nappa leather seat trim (a bright tan appearance) – SP Package

Pure White Nappa leather seat trim and cloth dashboard panel with Kakenui stitching – Takumi Package (may show dirt and wear and tear over time).

The full details of the option packs are shown below.

The interior layout is easy to use and has one feature that I really like. The infotainment screen is NOT a touch screen. To move the curser to a feature you want to select, you twist a dial in the centre console so that the curser moves in steps between the options on the screen. You then press the dial to enter your choice.

It may sound a bit complicated, but it removes the stabling at a screen when you are on the move and hoping you have hit the right area. It takes a little getting used and some people initially don’t like it, but it is a more sure-footed way of moving around the screen.

Powertrains

Mazda has not given up on the internal combustion engine. The new CX-60 has two new in-line six-cylinder, turbo engines; one petrol and one diesel. Both are supplemented by mild hybrid electric motors. The third option is a four-cylinder petrol with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

The maximum power outputs at are as follows:

6 cylinder, 3.3 litre turbo petrol with mild hybrid:
209 kW @ 5,000-6,000 rpm
450 Nm @ 2,000-3,500 rpm

6 cylinder, 3.3 litre turbo diesel with mild hybrid
187 kW @ 3,750 rpm
550 Nm @ 1,500-2,400 rpm

4 cylinder 2.5 litre turbo petrol PHEV
241 kW @ 6,000 rpm
500 Nm @ 4,000 rpm

All powertrains are all-wheel drive, through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The towing capacities are:

Diesel 2,000 kg (braked); 750 kg (unbraked)

Petrol (including PHEV) 2,500 kg (braked); 750 kg (unbraked) –

The diesel capacity is reduced below the petrol figure in order to ensure adequate cooling of the engine,

Because they are only mild hybrid systems the rated fuel consumption results are not outstanding especially the petrol 6-clyinder and its high fuel consumption in urban areas.

Driving impressions

Mazda says that “the in-line six-cylinder engine is the most naturally balanced engine configuration, and brings other benefits such as packaging, thermal efficiency and crash performance”.

I am not sure what the packaging benefits are as one of the advantages of the V6 configuration was said to be its more compact design, but there is no doubt the new in-line sixes in the CX-60 sound right and perform well. They run freely without a sense of straining. I also found the suspension gives sure footed road holding which shows, for example, when overtaking under power.

The Head Up Display in the CX-60, which is in every model, is excellent. Good information that is presented clearly.

The Mazda seemed most at home on an enthusiastic drive through winding roads. However, the pleasure of more relaxed touring was diminished by non-class leading road noise and smoothness.

Furthermore, in urban situations there were a couple of times when the car gave a decided “cluck” when, for example, slowing down in an uphill situation at slow speeds. While Mazda said the benefit of the eight-speed transmission was added smoothness there may be some further work needed on the integration of the engines and the hybrid systems.

Prices

The base model Evolve is priced (excluding on-road costs) for each powertrain at:

Petrol – $59,800

Diesel – $61,800

PHEV – $72,300

To upgrade to the GT will costs an additional $8,000 while the Azami is a further $5,200 on top of that. This makes the range of prices from $59,800 to $85,500 plus on road costs.

Other thoughts

Good

The in-line 6-cylinder new engines sound good and go well

The road holding is solid

Mazda is embracing electrification

Could improve

They’re only mild hybrids, so fuel savings are not class leading especially the petrol engine powertrain.

The road noise and smoothness are not bad but not class leading for the price.

You have to move to the higher grades and option packs to get the real premium features

The integration of the engines, the electric motors and their new 8 speed automatic could be better.

Conclusions

Mazda is the second bestselling brand in Australia and in the first half of the year is just ahead of last years sales, but for the month on June they have performed particularly well.

They strive to reach a wide range of customers from their “zoom- zoom” appeal to a reputation of solid dependability.

The CX-60 is pitched at the premium market where Mazda is unashamedly aiming for. It is overall appearance and interior suits that image while its new engines have a spirited performance.

As it moves toward electrification (all Mazda models with be electrified by 2030 although the number that are hybrid versus full electric remains to be seen), they will need to refine their electrification power trains to keep up with the opposition.

Mazda CX-60 has been revealed. Mazda is moving even further upmarket with this large hybrid SUV.

The model showcases the future movement towards the EV range with a dedicated EV architecture and three powertrains. One full PHEV based on a 2.5L four cylinder direct injection petrol engine, and two mild hybrids based on 3.3l inline turbo 6 cylinder petrol and a diesel engines.

The new rear-biased i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system is also fitted to all versions of the Mazda CX-60. This is supported by Mi-Drive, which helps the driver easily switch between five different driving modes, each to suit a different driving situation: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Towing and EV (PHEV only).

Mazda CX-60 Model Reveal details

The First-Ever Mazda CX-60 is now available to order, setting a new benchmark in style, quality and performance for the brand and its Mazda Premium philosophy.

Arriving in June 2023, Mazda CX-60 is the debut vehicle from Mazda’s Large Product Group and introduces three sophisticated new powertrains. All hybridised, this includes inline-six turbocharged petrol and diesel engines and Mazda’s first-ever plug-in hybrid.

The powerplants can be mated to any one of three highly specified model grades – Evolve, GT or Azami – and customised further with safety and styling option packs.

Commenting on the new flagship model’s significance, Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi said: “The Mazda CX-60 is more than an exciting new SUV; it’s the evolution of Mazda Premium – a high-quality concentration of design, driving dynamics, technology and comfort developed around our customers and what they want from a mid-sized SUV.”

Hybrid Powertrains

Launching with a hybrid-only powertrain line-up, at the top of the range is the very first Mazda plug-in hybrid – the e-Skyactiv PHEV.

PHEV CX-60

With a combined 241 kW system output and peak torque of 500Nm from its 100 kW motor and Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre, four-cylinder direct injection petrol, the Mazda CX-60 earns the title as the most powerful road-going Mazda to date. Its 100 km/h sprint time from rest takes just 5.9 seconds.

Overall range in EV mode is up to 76 km at speeds of up to 100 km/h – comfortably exceeding the average Australian daily commuting distance by almost five times without the need to revert to the petrol engine.

Fuel consumption is also rated at a remarkably low 2.1L/100km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of just 49g/km.

The 355V, 17.8 kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery onboard battery, which is situated low in the car between the front and rear axles for an optimised centre of gravity, can be fully recharged from empty in 2.5 hours using a 7.2 kW AC charger.

Hybrid Petrol and Diesel

The six-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel both share a 3.3-litre capacity and join the line-up for the first time, with each utilising Mazda’s 48V M Hybrid Boost technology.

The large capacity actually improves efficiency with the higher volume of air enabling more complete combustion and a wider lean-burn range leading to lower fuel use and reduced NOx emissions.

In the e-Skyactiv G turbo petrol engine, this results in performance well above that of the Mazda CX-5’s 2.5 litre turbo (0-100 km/h takes 6.9 seconds – a full eight-tenths quicker), but with much better fuel economy – closer to a naturally aspirated 2.5 litre.

Mazda’s right-sizing approach to engine design gives the e-Skyactiv D turbo diesel a similar weight to that of a conventional four-cylinder diesel. It also offers a broad speed range at which lean burn can occur.

The results are impressive: the 3.3 litre e-Skyactiv D delivers a maximum power level of 187 kW and a remarkable 550 Nm of torque at 1,500 – 2,400 rpm. Acceleration to 100 km/h from rest takes 7.3 seconds, with robust in-gear performance at highway speeds for brisk overtaking and manoeuvrability. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 4.9L/100km, with CO2 emissions of 128g/km.

CX-60 Drivetrains

All engines in the Mazda CX-60 range are combined with a newly developed Skyactiv-Drive eight-speed automatic transmission. Smooth and responsive, it uses a wider gear range that delivers an optimal balance between driving and environmental performance. The use of a clutch in place of a torque converter means switching between gears is clean and rhythmic. It also enables accurate control of the M Hybrid Boost electric motor in the 48V mild hybrid system (where fitted).

This allows drivers to optimise traction, performance, handling and safety in the widest possible range of driving environments.

Technology and safety

The First-Ever Mazda CX-60 is underpinned by Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, which has been designed with a human-centric approach. It incorporates design elements such as focused body shell rigidity for driving response without lag, and controlled stiffness in different components to manage the transmission of forces to the occupant cabin, ensuring premium levels of comfort. It also uses Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) to control the posture of the Mazda CX-60 when braking at speed.

A range of i-Activsense driver assistance systems are designed to deliver safety performance for both occupants and other road users, including pedestrians.

Several of these new technologies debut in the Mazda CX-60. They include See-Through View, which builds on Mazda’s current 360° View Monitor by projecting natural footage of the vehicle’s surroundings, Hill Descent Control (HDC), which makes descending slippery road surfaces such as dirt tracks much safer, i-Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC), which can now incorporate speed limits from Traffic Sign Recognition and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Vehicle Exit Warning.

Driver personalisation

The Driver Personalisation System, another new innovation from Mazda, debuts in the First-Ever Mazda CX-60 and makes it easy for drivers to achieve their ideal driving position and enjoy Mazda’s signature Celebrate Driving experience.

When the driver enters their height via the infotainment centre display, the automatic driving position guide uses a camera to detect the location of their eyes. It then automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, Active Driving Display and door mirrors to match the driver’s eye position.

The system uses facial recognition to remember each driver’s preferences. Once the driver is detected, the Mazda CX-60 automatically restores more than 250 stored settings to match their preferences, including vehicle, audio and climate control settings. The system stores settings for up to six different users, plus guests.

The Driver Entry/Exit Assist function slides the steering wheel and seat out of the way to make it easier for drivers to get into and out of the Mazda CX-60.

Colour choices

Rhodium White Premium Metallic now joins Soul Red Crystal Metallic and Machine Grey Metallic and becomes Mazda’s third signature body colour.

Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of ‘less is more’ and created through a further evolution of Mazda’s Takuminuri painting technology, this new colour expresses strength and elegance through a Mazda-unique metallic look.

Alternatively, Mazda CX-60 customers can choose from the following colours: Jet Black Mica, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Sonic Silver Metallic, Machine Grey Metallic, Soul Red Crystal Metallic and Platinum Quartz Metallic.

Arriving in the first half of 2023, the First-Ever Mazda CX-60 will offer a hybrid-only powertrain line-up.

Customers will have three distinct and characterful engine options to choose from.

Leading the range is Mazda’s first production plug-in hybrid model, using a 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine mated to a 100 kW electric motor and 355V, 17.8 kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery. System power output totals an impressive 241 kW with peak torque of 500 Nm, making it the most powerful Mazda road car ever produced.

Two newly developed straight-six engines featuring M Hybrid Boost technology – Mazda’s 48V mild hybrid system – will also debut on Mazda CX-60.

The first is a 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D turbodiesel, producing 187 kW at 3,750rpm and a substantial 550 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 2,400rpm.

Alternatively, a high-powered turbocharged petrol unit is available, again with a 3.3-litre capacity, delivering 209 kW between 5,000rpm and 6,000rpm and 450 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,500rpm.

Each powertrain employs the rear-biased i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system and the new eight-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission, which utilises a multi-plate clutch with an integrated electric motor/generator for fast, responsive shifts and high efficiency.

Mazda CX-60 Model range

Three comprehensively equipped Mazda CX-60 model grades will be offered locally – Evolve, GT and the flagship Azami specification.

All three model grades will be highly specified, with a host of equipment fitted as standard across the board, including wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, a powered tailgate, exterior powered mirrors with auto-folding, heating and auto-dimming function and advanced keyless entry.

Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi said: “The CX-60 represents a whole new chapter for Mazda and introduces a series of firsts for the brand: an all-new platform; full plug-in hybrid technology; rear-biased all-wheel drive and state-of-the-art longitudinal powerplants.

“All of this is wrapped in our beautifully restrained Kodo Design evolution, and as we draw closer to the local introduction of this authentically premium vehicle, the 14,500+ expressions of interest we have already received are a clear indication of the level of anticipation that already surrounds Mazda CX-60.”

More broadly across the range, alloy wheel sizes will range from 18- to 20-inches, and Rhodium white metallic, a newly developed paint finish, can also be specified regardless of model grade.

Full specifications and pricing for the Mazda CX-60 range will be confirmed in quarter four of this year.

Ahead of its official market launch, Mazda Australia is commencing an intensive local testing program this month for the First-Ever Mazda CX-60.
Two pre-production vehicles are undertaking a series of comprehensive on-road assessments that will last for up to six months.

The program will measure key data in a series of high- and low-load scenarios that include powertrain stress-testing, towing capability, quality assurance, in-depth analysis of real-world driving range and other performance-related criteria. More than 30,000 kilometres will be covered during the testing phase and all data collated will be shared with Mazda’s Hiroshima R and D centre in Japan for analysis.

Australia is considered a key market for contributing to the worldwide vehicle testing regime due to its unique road composition and climatic conditions. It also represents the ideal environment for validation of Mazda’s acclaimed Jinba-Ittai driving experience, a core philosophy in the development of the Mazda CX-60.

Welcoming the arrival of the two development vehicles domestically, Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi said: “We are fully invested in ensuring our ground-breaking SUV will also masterfully deliver on the specific needs of our Australian customers.

“Our engineering team will consistently push the cars to their extremes, and these strenuous evaluations are a vital step in our absolute commitment to customer experience and continuous brand improvement.”

Director of Marketing, Alastair Doak added: “These cars are some of the very first to come off the production line, yet despite their early build schedule, the quality of fit and finish is already indicative of the authentically premium offering that the Mazda CX-60 model range represents.

“This rigorous and informative testing program is the ideal opportunity for our market to contribute to the future success of this landmark model from the very beginning.”

The two development vehicles will also be utilised to reinforce and progress the comprehensive training schedule already being rolled out internally and across the 140-strong dealer network, strengthening local knowledge and understanding in readiness for the arrival of the CX-60.

Pricing and local specification of the Mazda CX-60 will be confirmed closer to launch.
