Mazda CX – Mazda has introduced a series of enhancements across its Large Architecture SUV range, now delivering even more value through expanded standard equipment and revised pricing for the Mazda CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 models.

Mazda CX Models Simplified Pricing Structure

A simplified pricing structure for 2026 applies means 3.3L inline-six petrol and diesel variants are now priced equally across equivalent model grades. P50e Plug-in Hybrids, available exclusively on CX-60 and CX-80, have also been repriced and are now just $5,000 more than the equivalent G40e or D50e engine.

Customers now have greater flexibility to select the vehicle that best suits their lifestyle and driving needs without compromise, and can purchase a vehicle on preference alone – reinforcing Mazda’s commitment to choice and delivering exceptional value.

Headlining the equipment updates for 2026 is the addition and standardisation of the Sports Appearance Package on CX-90 GT grades. Black exterior trims replace chrome and extend to the signature wing, centre bumper guard, mirror caps, window mouldings, roof rails and side signature badging. The vehicle’s bold proportions are accentuated even further with 21-inch black alloy wheels that command road presence.

Safety updates

Safety in the Mazda CX-90 and CX-60 have been updated, now including Front Cross Traffic Brake (FCTB), and Cruising Traffic Support (CTS) with Driver Emergency Assist as standard, as well as the addition of Mazda Connected Services – already equipped in the CX-70 and CX-80.

New Colours

Both vehicles now sport a refreshed colour palette, with Polymetal Grey Metallic now available in lieu of Sonic Silver Metallic. Body colours for the CX-70 and CX-80 remain unchanged.

New models

Further strengthening the Mazda CX-80 range is the introduction of the Pure grade paired with Mazda’s 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D in-line six-cylinder engine, providing customers with an additional choice at the entry-point to the CX-80. This engine provides smooth, torque-rich performance with exceptional efficiency thanks to Mazda’s 48V M-Hybrid Boost, and pairs graciously with the practicality and versatility of the three-row CX-80.

Commenting on the updates, Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi said: “Our Large Architecture range already represents the very best of Mazda, combining Kodo design and exemplary craftsmanship with acclaimed Jinba Ittai driving dynamics.

“We’re now making the range even more compelling by increasing the value proposition and making each model more attainable than ever,” he added.

The 2026 Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida has arrived to shake up a segment drowning in look-alike, feel-alike appliances.

The Junior is Alfa Romeo’s most audacious gamble in years. On paper, it sits on a shared Stellantis platform underneath the Peugeot 2008 and Jeep Avenger. In reality, it drives, looks, and feels like nothing else in the segment. Arriving at an indicative drive-away price of around $51,000 – $54,000 depending on state, it isn’t bargain territory for a light SUV. But you’re not paying for sheet metal — you’re paying for a dose of Italian soul that the other brands simply cannot replicate.

What does the 2026 Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida look like?

Indeed, the Junior is proof that good design transcends platform-sharing. At 4170mm long and 1780mm wide, it is genuinely compact — a full 360mm shorter than the Alfa Romeo Tonale — yet it wears its size confidently, with taut flanks, a bold Scudetto Leggenda shield grille, and sharp LED lighting that signals intent before you even turn the key.

Moreover, the exterior repays close attention. The glossy black body kit, the twin exhaust outlets (Ibrida only), the side-mounted number plate that pays homage to classic Alfa GT coupes, and the 18-inch Petali diamond-cut alloy wheels all earn lingering looks. Six exterior colours — all named after districts of Milan, a cheeky nod to the car’s short-lived “Milano” naming saga — include White Sempione, Black Tortona, Red Brera, Blue Navigli, Arese Steel, and Galleria Light Grey. Each one suits the Junior’s purposeful stance beautifully.

What is the 2026 Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida like inside?

Step inside, and the Junior’s Italian character doesn’t let up. The cabin carries a cockpit quality — the high centre console, the angled 10.25-inch infotainment screen tilted toward the driver, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel that is thin-rimmed and perfectly shaped. The Spiga interior trim in black cloth and leatherette with red contrast stitching injects warmth into what could otherwise feel like a cave. Aluminium pedals and door sills, soft-touch surfaces on the dash and upper doors, and ambient lighting all contribute to an atmosphere that is genuinely premium — well above what you find in the Mazda CX-3 or Toyota Yaris Cross.

Additionally, the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster renders crisp, twin-dial graphics in classic Alfa style. The matching central infotainment screen responds quickly, and its menu structure is logically arranged with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard. A wireless charging pad is also included — a thoughtful touch for a car aimed at urban commuters.

Storage

The Junior Ibrida doesn’t pretend to be a people-mover. Front occupants enjoy a commanding, cocooned driving position with excellent seat support, while storage for daily essentials — a large central bin, door pockets, and a handy shelf beneath the infotainment screen — is well considered. There is no traditional glovebox; instead, a compact but useful storage compartment sits ahead of the passenger seat.

However, there is no frunk (front boot), which is expected given the front-wheel-drive, north-south powertrain layout. What you do get is a 415-litre boot — genuinely impressive for this class, beating the Lexus LBX (402L) and Audi Q2 (405L). The boot floor is flat and high, accepting three to four small suitcases side-by-side with ease. The hands-free powered tailgate with foot-sensor activation is a practical real-world feature and comes standard.

Rear seat and boot space

Despite its many strengths, this is the Junior’s most significant real-world compromise. The rear seat is best described as a 2+1 in practice — two adults sit comfortably, but three abreast is a squeeze. Headroom suits occupants up to around 180cm, though the sloping roofline clips taller passengers. Legroom is tight but liveable for short to medium trips. There is a rear USB port for charging devices, and a 60:40-split folding rear seat expands cargo capacity meaningfully when required.

Furthermore, with rear seats folded the boot grows to approximately 1250 litres — a practical, flat loading area suitable for flat-pack furniture, a weekend away, or a large dog crate. Folding the seats is straightforward and doesn’t require a PhD in engineering, which regular users will genuinely appreciate.

Technology and connectivity

The Junior’s cabin tech impresses from the moment the car wakes up. The 10.25-inch touchscreen sits at a natural eyeline angle and runs an intuitive menu system that takes no more than a few minutes to master. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect reliably, and the wireless charging pad keeps phones topped up without fuss.

In addition, the digital cockpit pairs with a suite of connected services including live traffic satellite navigation, SOS emergency calling, and remote access via the Alfa Romeo smartphone companion app, with the first 12 months complimentary. The DNA drive mode selector — Dynamic, Natural, and Advanced Efficiency — is a genuine differentiator, adjusting throttle response, steering weight, and hybrid energy management to suit your mood or conditions.

What sets the Alfa experience apart is how cohesive it all feels — less like a tech demo, more like a car Alfa Romeo has tuned from the inside out to feel a particular way. Even the ADAS warning chimes reportedly sound softer and more melodic than the shrill alerts found in class rivals; a small but telling detail about how deeply Alfa has considered the ownership experience.

One-Touch Features

Engine and drivetrain

Under the bonnet, the Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida pairs a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine with a 21kW electric motor integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, fed by a 0.9kWh 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack. Combined system output reaches 107kW and 230Nm to the front wheels. Several Peugeot and Citroën products share this fundamental powertrain, but the Junior deploys it with characteristic Alfa verve.

In practice, the claimed fuel consumption of 4.1L/100km on the NEDC cycle translates to mid-fives to low sixes in real-world driving — impressive for a non-plug-in hybrid. A 44-litre tank requires 95 RON premium unleaded. The 0–100km/h sprint takes a claimed 8.9 seconds, and the Junior tops out at 206km/h — honest, workmanlike figures that feel more engaging behind the wheel, thanks to the chassis tuning.

What’s the 2026 Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida like to drive?

This is where the Junior transcends its platform-shared DNA. The steering carries genuine weight and precision, communicating road texture in a way that the Jeep Avenger and Peugeot 2008 siblings simply do not. The chassis feels alert and willing, encouraging corner entry with confidence. As a result, Alfa Romeo has engineered something that punches well above its cubic capacity — a light SUV that genuinely rewards enthusiastic driving.

At highway speeds, the Junior settles into an easy, refined cruise and suppresses wind and road noise well for the class. In urban environments, the mild-hybrid system deploys its electric motor to smooth low-speed manoeuvres and take-offs, making city driving stress-free. The dual-clutch gearbox occasionally hunts for ratios in slow traffic — a known characteristic of this transmission type — but it largely behaves itself. Selecting Dynamic mode genuinely transforms the experience: throttle response sharpens, the engine holds revs longer, and the Junior becomes a surprisingly lively urban companion.

Safety features

ANCAP and Euro NCAP have not yet tested the Junior Ibrida — a notable caveat for safety-conscious buyers. Nevertheless, the car comes standard with a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite:

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection

Blind-Spot Monitoring

Lane-Keep Assist

Adaptive Cruise Control

Traffic Sign Recognition

Front, Side and Rear Parking Sensors

Reversing Camera with stitched surround-view display

Driver Attention Monitoring

Owner benefits

On the ownership side, Alfa Romeo offers a solid 5-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty alongside 5 years of complimentary roadside assistance — the latter extendable by 12 months at each authorised dealer service visit throughout the vehicle’s life. That roadside coverage is a genuine differentiator against several rivals.

Alfa Romeo schedules servicing every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first — more frequent than some Japanese rivals — and service costs exceed the class average, with a five-year package totalling approximately $3,106. Buyers should factor this into the total cost of ownership calculation. Alfa Romeo does not formally offer a factory capped-price servicing programme, though its online calculator provides cost estimates in advance.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, the 2026 Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida is a car that defies expectations at every turn. On paper, a Stellantis-platform mild hybrid with a three-cylinder engine and tight rear seat should be nothing special. In reality, it is the most characterful, design-led, and genuinely engaging light SUV you can buy in Australia for under $55,000 drive-away. For more context, see our guide to the best hybrid SUVs in Australia.

Admittedly, it won’t suit every buyer. Families with three rear passengers will find it snug, servicing costs are real, and the absence of an ANCAP rating leaves a question mark for those who prioritise five-star safety credentials above all else. However, for the urban professional who wants a car that sparks joy, turns heads at the café, and makes a weekday commute feel like it means something — the Junior Ibrida is Alfa Romeo’s most important car in a decade. And it just might be the revival the brand has been waiting for.

Designed according to the concept of ‘Dignified Performance’, Mazda has crafted the CX-70 with a focus on dynamic involvement and features expressive and sporting styling, abundant space and exemplary levels of in-cabin luxury to match.

This striking design extends inside the CX-70, with a two-row cabin that is brimming with Takumi craftsmanship as well as sophisticated technologies and appointments.

A load space offering up to 923 litres of seats-up capacity and a vast 2,015 litres in total when the second row is folded down enables owners to pursue their passions with no compromise.

At launch, the First-Ever, All-Hybrid Mazda CX-70 offers two compelling powertrain options. Mazda’s latest 3.3-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engines, available in either petrol or diesel, deliver assertive performance and impressive efficiency.

Mazda’s advanced e-Skyactiv G turbocharged petrol is the brand’s most powerful mass-production powerplant, delivering up to 254 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque. Alternatively, the 187 kW e-Skyactiv D turbocharged diesel unit offers up to 550 Nm of torque from as low as 1,500 RPM. Both engines are supported by Mazda’s M Hybrid Boost 48V mild hybrid technology and utilise Mazda’s eight-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission.

Rear-biased i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard across the range, as is front double wishbone and rear multi-link suspension to ensure an engaging, entertaining drive that emphatically delivers a Jinba Ittai experience.

Mazda CX-80 – Mazda has launched the all new Mazda CX-80 to replace the older popular CX-8. This is a seven seat family AWD SUV. It comes in a choice of grades as well three engine choices.

Mazda CX-80 October 2024 Update

Mazda’s newest and most accessible seven-seat family SUV – the First-Ever, All-Hybrid Mazda CX-80 – is ready to join the brand’s range, developed and specified to offer Australian families genuine SUV practicality, sophisticated technology and exceptional value for money.

The exterior design concept of the Mazda CX-80 is ‘Graceful Toughness’, which blends SUV utility with the intelligence and elegance that underpins Mazda’s ‘Kodo – Soul of Motion’ design language.

The spacious and luxurious seven-seat cabin is a showcase of craftsmanship, comfort and flexibility.

Mazda CX-80 engine choices

Customers will have three highly efficient engine choices when the CX-80 goes on sale this month. The CX-80 PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) headlines the powertrain range. It delivers up to 241 kW of power and a maximum torque of 500 Nm by combining its 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine with a 129 kW electric motor, which is powered by a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. An electric-only range of up to 65km is available, and charging from 20 to 80 per cent at the maximum 7.2 kW AC rate takes as little as 90 minutes.

The CX-80 PHEV returns an impressive 2.7 litres per 100 kilometres, with CO2 emissions of only 64g/km (combined cycle, according to ADR 81/02 testing).

Mazda’s latest 3.3-litre turbocharged e-Skyactiv G (petrol, 209 kW/450 Nm) and e-Skyactiv D (diesel, 187 kW/550 Nm) six-cylinder engines are also available. Both take advantage of Mazda’s M Hybrid Boost 48 V mild hybrid technology for even greater performance and efficiency, with frugal combined fuel consumption of 5.2l/100km for the diesel and 8.4l/100km for the petrol.

Mazda’s eight-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission and rear-biased i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD) are fitted across the CX-80 range, while a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension setup reward occupants with a dynamic yet comfortable experience.

The three-row CX-80 is offered in four equipment-rich model grades: Pure, Touring, GT and Azami. All offer a highly compelling value proposition.

V-Active technology – The upgraded Toyota HiLux range has officially gone on sale in Australia, bringing with it new V-Active technology on select double-cab 4×4 variants, refreshed exterior styling and additional specification that bring valuable enhancements for customers.

New HiLux range touches down in Australia with new styling and technology

V-Active technology improves fuel consumption, powertrain smoothness

New HiLux range available from $26,475 plus on-road costs

Pricing for the new HiLux range starts from $26,475 plus on-road costs for the entry-level 4×2 WorkMate single-cab chassis, while V-Active technology is available starting with the 4×4 SR double-cab chassis from $54,130 plus on-roads.

Along with other specification upgrades, the addition of V-Active technology comes with a price premium of as little as $590, providing excellent value for customers.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the enhanced HiLux range brought welcome enhancements to the range that ensure it remains a popular choice for tradespeople and adventure-focused customers alike.

“Rugged reliability and incredible capability have ensured the Toyota HiLux has been a favourite choice for a vast range of customers needing a quality pick-up for work or play,” Mr Hanley said.

V-Active for a small price premium

“The addition of V-Active for a small price premium, along with other valuable specification and styling improvements ensure the HiLux is more desirable than it has ever been.”

Available on select 4×4 double-cab SR, SR5 grades as well as the luxurious Rogue, V-Active technology adds a motor generator, 48-volt battery and DC/DC converter to the tried-and-true 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrain and six-speed automatic transmission, bringing benefits to fuel economy, powertrain smoothness and off-road ability.

The addition of V-Active technology allows for the fitment of a stop-start system to the turbo-diesel engine which plays a role in helping reduce fuel consumption by up to approximately 10 per cent compared to 2.8-litre engines without V-Active technology.

The 48-volt system makes the stop-start system impressively smooth and seamless, with a significant reduction in vibrations when restarting the engine compared to an engine not fitted with V-Active technology. The speed of the engine restart is also noticeably short, adding to the smooth nature of the start-stop system.

Fitting a 48-volt system also allows the engine to be switched off for longer than a typical internal-combustion engine when stopped in traffic, with owners able to choose from either a ‘Normal’ or ‘Long’ setting which increases the time the engine is switched off while the air conditioning is running.

Engine idling speed is reduced in V-Active technology grades, reduced from 720rpm to 600rpm.

Braking energy is recovered by the motor generator when decelerating, which contributes to a natural braking feeling to make driving easier. When accelerating, the motor generator can contribute power assistance in areas of lower engine efficiency to increase responsiveness and make acceleration smoother.

Multi-Terrain Select

HiLux variants equipped with V-Active technology add Multi-Terrain Select, which includes six selectable modes that enhance wheel traction in a range of road surfaces.

When in high range, MTS can be set to Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud and Deep Snow, while low range offers Auto, Sand, Mud and Rock modes to optimally deploy power and maximise traction.

The motor generator unit has been positioned high in the engine bay to ensure the V-Active technology system retains the excellent off-road ability of the HiLux.

All core HiLux grades with the exception of the WorkMate and SR single-cab and petrol variants gain a new front-end visual refresh which includes new front bumpers and a honeycomb mesh grille.

At the rear, WorkMate, SR, SR5 and GR Sport pick-ups offer a gloss black rear bumper while the Rogue sports a unique dark grey finish.

SR5 grades add dark-finished LED headlamps, gloss black exterior mirrors, door handles, tailgate handle and powder-coated sports bar for pick-up body styles.

Additional convenience is provided for all pick-up grades with the fitment of a tailgate damper with lift assist, which consists of a gas strut and steel cable. SR double-cab pick-ups with automatic transmissions add front and rear parking sensors.

Double-cab automatic SR5 grades gain a wireless charger which is also applied to the Rogue and GR Sport flagship along with two rear USB-C ports for greater charging capability.

It provides a little extra power and torque and improves economy by about 10%

More Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid details

e-Boxer mild hybrid system and transmission

Hybrid Crosstrek variants feature Subaru’s hybrid electric power unit system that combines Motor Assist with two of Subaru’s core technologies – Boxer engine and Symmetrical AWD.

The electric motor is placed near the vehicle’s centre of gravity, while the battery and other components are placed above the rear axle, allowing the lowest possible centre of gravity and balanced front/rear vehicle weight distribution.

The system includes a 2.0-litre direct injection petrol Boxer engine, an electric motor inbuilt in the rear of the CVT, and a 118.4-volt battery placed under the rear cargo floor.

A prime benefit of an electric motor is its ability to produce elevated levels of torque instantaneously, providing enhanced driveability and engagement. Motor Assist helps enhance X-Mode’s rough road capability, for example, by enabling easy torque control at low speeds over tough terrain.

All-new Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid variants, which feature the e-Boxer engine, are equipped with the TH580 Lineartronic® CVT with 7-speed manual mode.

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid S final thoughts

I like the Subaru Crosstrek. Perfect size for an adventure based urban AWD SUV.

As this is a hybrid, I was looking for more fuel benefits, but its good for a mild hybrid.

The Crosstrek hybrid ‘S’ model is packed with features and is easy to drive and live with.

There is a hefty $3500 price premium over the petrol version. That’s a lot of fuel I could buy.

HiLux Revo BEV Concept

For the first time on Australian soil, Toyota showed the HiLux Revo BEV Concept, hinting at the future of the HiLux in all-electric guise.

Originally unveiled in Thailand late last year, the HiLux Revo BEV Concept is an urban-focused two-wheel drive pick-up designed for short-range use, featuring a wealth of proprietary technologies under the skin.

The HiLux Revo BEV Concept is in Australia to take part in testing and evaluation on local soil to help further the development of alternative powertrain technologies in Australia’s favourite vehicle.

Toyota BZ4X

While the HiLux BEV remains a concept, customers will soon be able to purchase or lease Toyota’s first production BEV when the new bZ4X arrives in Australia in early 2024.

This will be the first of three production battery-electric vehicles due in Australia over the next three years further expanding Toyota’s electrified lineup.

All new C-HR

As Toyota continues to develop more battery-electric vehicles, it is committed to growing its hugely successful hybrid range and displayed for the time in Australia, the all-new hybrid-only second-generation C-HR.

The 1.8-litre hybrid front-wheel drive Koba and 2.0-litre hybrid all-wheel drive GR Sport were both on display showcasing the stylish new premium small SUV that is due on sale early in 2024.

Designed, engineered and built in Europe, the all-new C-HR makes significant strides in styling, technology and refinement, while doubling the content of recycled plastic used in the vehicle compared to the current-generation C-HR for a reduced environmental impact.

LandCruiser Prado Mild Hybrid

Further demonstration of Toyota’s growing electrification of its vehicles was evident in the display of a production HiLux and pre-production version of the all-new LandCruiser Prado, both fitted with 48-Volt Technology.

The 48-Volt Technology is combined with the 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission and comprises an additional 48-Volt battery, small electric motor-generator and other components to help reduce fuel consumption.

Both vehicles are due to launch in Australia in 2024 and the pre-production Prado prototype is being used for extensive testing across the Australian landscape.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid

Another vehicle on display demonstrating Toyota’s diverse approach to electrification was the full-size hybrid Tundra pick-up.

In a Toyota first, 300 Tundras will be converted to right hand drive locally by Toyota partner Walkinshaw Automotive Group and leased to selected potential customers for a real world evaluation and validation program.

Upgraded 70 series

Australia is a unique environment and Toyota remains committed to providing the right vehicles for all customers with the showcase providing a first in-the-metal look at the significantly upgraded LandCruiser 70 Series.

The upgraded 70 Series features updated styling and the new option of a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a six-speed automatic transmission – the first time this combination has been offered on the 70 Series range.

Toyota HiLux GR Sport

Joining the battery-electric concept and HiLux with 48-Volt Technology was the production HiLux GR Sport, the new flagship of the HiLux range offering improved performance in off-road conditions and a swathe of upgrades while retaining the HiLux’s strong 3,500kg braked towing capacity1.

More than just a set of visual enhancements, the HiLux GR Sport offers a wider wheel track with enhanced suspension, brakes and tyres, and improved performance from the tried and tested 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, with the new apex off-road grade arriving in local showrooms in September.

The broad range of vehicles and technologies within the Toyota stable that were on show demonstrate the brand’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while providing the right technology for customers at the right time.

But Toyota’s development of new technologies and applications doesn’t end there.

Toyota Mirai FCEV

Toyota has been leasing a small number of Mirai FCEVs to progressive organisations for the past two years an its long-term investment in hydrogen fuel-cell electric technology may also offer an appropriate solution for zero-tailpipe-CO2-emission commercial vehicles.

In the UK, Toyota recently showed off a HiLux Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric Concept that uses the same Toyota FCEV system currently found in the production Mirai.

The system combines a 330-cell solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell stack, three high-pressure hydrogen tanks, a large lithium-ion battery, electric motor and rear transaxle.

In the Mirai, it develops 134kW/300Nm driving through the rear wheels, with the 5.6kg hydrogen tank capacity delivering a strong WLTP driving range of 650km2.

The hydrogen HiLux concept is currently being developed into prototype vehicles in partnership with the UK government, built at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Burnaston, England.

Along with hydrogen fuel-cell electric powertrains, Toyota is also developing internal-combustion engines powered by liquid hydrogen as seen in vehicles like the GR Corolla H2 race car as announced by Toyota Motor Europe earlier this year.

Volvo XC40 – Last week I drove the Volvo XC40 Ultimate B5 Dark AWD SUV. Here is a mid-sized European SUV that is stylish and spacious. It has a somewhat edgy appearance with a boxy tailgate. It’s a look that grown on you.

Inside the layout is practical and comfortable.

I particularly like the heated front seats with electric adjustment for the driver and the vertical style central touch screen.

The driver feels at home with a thicker steering wheel and clever and different transmission lever.

Rear seats are spacious and comfortable. There is good rear leg and head room for this size vehicle. Boot space is equally spacious.

The XC40 B5 is powered by a mild hybrid 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine. There is reasonable power with 183 kilowatts and torque of 250 newton metres. This drives through an all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

At times around the suburbs, it felt a little slow to start with, but was smooth and easy to drive. Economy is rated at 7.2l/100k but we used around 10 litres per 100 kilometres around town.

The Volvo XC40 Ultimate B5 Dark we tested was priced at $69,690 including options, plus the usual costs.

This is a Motoring Minute

More Volvo XC40 B5 Dark details

XC40 B5 Dark Exterior

First up I like the chunky, quirky styling. It’s got a bit of an edge to it.

The car I drove came in the optional Fjord Blue colour which was appealing.

The front bonnet with its sloping detail lines flows into the grill and LED lights. It’s a sleek style yet bold as well.

From the side it sits a bit upright, with a high roof and boot lone. This contrasts with the coupe/Sportback style many smaller SUVs are going with these days.

Its chunky and stylish and the 20-inch alloy wheels with low profile tyres compliment it.

From the rear it looks typically Volvo.

What is the XC40 B5 Dark like inside?

This is the first Volvo I’ve driven in a while, and it takes a little getting used to.

Overall impressions were uncluttered, northern European and inviting.

Seats are comfortable and supportive with electric adjustments. I get cold in the mornings so the heated seats as part of the climate option pack were appreciated.

Almost the first thing you see is the tall central touch screen. This is becoming a style trend these days and its practical and mirrors our phones.

The Orrefers crystal transmission lever is an unusual touch.

Touch sensitivity was a little delayed, but it was easy to use.

Rear seats are designed for two people really and getting in and out is a little tight. Head room is generous though.

One advantage of the high style boot line is a large boot space. The middle seats fold 60/40 with a ski port. The boot opens nice and high so taller people don’t hit their head.

XC40 B5 Engine and drivetrain

The XC40 has a 2.0L 4-cylinder mild hybrid petrol engine. It drives all four wheels through an AWD system and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

There is a stop/start function. It works well but can be a bit intrusive

It comes with front and rear disc brakes and 20″ 5-Double Spoke Black Diamond Cut Alloy Wheels

XC40 B5 comes with MacPherson Strut front and multi-link rear suspension and a Touring Chassis.

What is the XC40 B5 like to drive

For the week I drove mostly around town with a linger weekend drive as well. Perhaps typical of what buyers would do.

Overall, it was easy to drive. There was a slight hesitation at times, through the stop start function. I usually turn these off, but you can’t in the XC40. That was a little frustrating.

There was one time where I was coming into a roundabout and the stop start function kicked in, but when I went to go it hesitated, dangerous in a busy intersection. That’s why I don’t like them.

But it was responsive to everything I asked it to do. Its not a sports SUV by any means but I would say zippy. The 2.0L engine has enough get up and go for everyday driving.

Volvo XC40 B5 Dark final thoughts

The XC40 is a little quirky and edgy. Its comfortable with a lot of luxury features.

Around town and on longer drives it cruises easily.

The option packs on the test vehicle were worth the money and complete the package.

At a touch under $70,000 its also well priced.

Yep, worth a test drive if you’re looking for a premium small to mid-size SUV.

Mazda CX-60 – Mazda has launched its second model into the medium sized SUV segment. They already have the CX-5 which is placed in the “below $60,000” category.

The new CX-60 which comes with some new engines and mild hybrid power, represents Mazda’s unashamed push to premium vehicles.

It has three powertrain options (petrol, diesel, and PHEV) and three feature levels (Evolve, GT, and Azami).

CX-60 Exterior

The exterior is not adventurous in a category that has several manufacturers pushing the design envelope. There is, however, enough identification to pick that it is a Mazda (particularly from the front). It looks refined, but it is not a standout design either.

The vehicle, for example does not make use of modern lighting to create strip lights across the front or rear of the vehicles.

From the side it has a simple horizontal waistline crease (very slightly curved) but not some of the more aggressive, sharp angles and creases that other brands use to give a wedge-shaped appearance.

The overall appearance of the rear of the car is very typically the station wagon look and not easily differentiated from many other similar cars in the category.

There are seven colour to choose from. The standout colour is “Soul Red Crystal”.

CX-60 Interiors

The interior designs are mature in their looks, even plush if you take up some of the option packs.

The top spec Azami model gets the most distinctive interior colour choices including:

Dark black leather – Luxury Package

Tan Nappa leather seat trim (a bright tan appearance) – SP Package

Pure White Nappa leather seat trim and cloth dashboard panel with Kakenui stitching – Takumi Package (may show dirt and wear and tear over time).

The full details of the option packs are shown below.

The interior layout is easy to use and has one feature that I really like. The infotainment screen is NOT a touch screen. To move the curser to a feature you want to select, you twist a dial in the centre console so that the curser moves in steps between the options on the screen. You then press the dial to enter your choice.

It may sound a bit complicated, but it removes the stabling at a screen when you are on the move and hoping you have hit the right area. It takes a little getting used and some people initially don’t like it, but it is a more sure-footed way of moving around the screen.

Powertrains

Mazda has not given up on the internal combustion engine. The new CX-60 has two new in-line six-cylinder, turbo engines; one petrol and one diesel. Both are supplemented by mild hybrid electric motors. The third option is a four-cylinder petrol with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

The maximum power outputs at are as follows:

6 cylinder, 3.3 litre turbo petrol with mild hybrid:
209 kW @ 5,000-6,000 rpm
450 Nm @ 2,000-3,500 rpm

6 cylinder, 3.3 litre turbo diesel with mild hybrid
187 kW @ 3,750 rpm
550 Nm @ 1,500-2,400 rpm

4 cylinder 2.5 litre turbo petrol PHEV
241 kW @ 6,000 rpm
500 Nm @ 4,000 rpm

All powertrains are all-wheel drive, through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The towing capacities are:

Diesel 2,000 kg (braked); 750 kg (unbraked)

Petrol (including PHEV) 2,500 kg (braked); 750 kg (unbraked) –

The diesel capacity is reduced below the petrol figure in order to ensure adequate cooling of the engine,

Because they are only mild hybrid systems the rated fuel consumption results are not outstanding especially the petrol 6-clyinder and its high fuel consumption in urban areas.

Driving impressions

Mazda says that “the in-line six-cylinder engine is the most naturally balanced engine configuration, and brings other benefits such as packaging, thermal efficiency and crash performance”.

I am not sure what the packaging benefits are as one of the advantages of the V6 configuration was said to be its more compact design, but there is no doubt the new in-line sixes in the CX-60 sound right and perform well. They run freely without a sense of straining. I also found the suspension gives sure footed road holding which shows, for example, when overtaking under power.

The Head Up Display in the CX-60, which is in every model, is excellent. Good information that is presented clearly.

The Mazda seemed most at home on an enthusiastic drive through winding roads. However, the pleasure of more relaxed touring was diminished by non-class leading road noise and smoothness.

Furthermore, in urban situations there were a couple of times when the car gave a decided “cluck” when, for example, slowing down in an uphill situation at slow speeds. While Mazda said the benefit of the eight-speed transmission was added smoothness there may be some further work needed on the integration of the engines and the hybrid systems.

Prices

The base model Evolve is priced (excluding on-road costs) for each powertrain at:

Petrol – $59,800

Diesel – $61,800

PHEV – $72,300

To upgrade to the GT will costs an additional $8,000 while the Azami is a further $5,200 on top of that. This makes the range of prices from $59,800 to $85,500 plus on road costs.

Other thoughts

Good

The in-line 6-cylinder new engines sound good and go well

The road holding is solid

Mazda is embracing electrification

Could improve

They’re only mild hybrids, so fuel savings are not class leading especially the petrol engine powertrain.

The road noise and smoothness are not bad but not class leading for the price.

You have to move to the higher grades and option packs to get the real premium features

The integration of the engines, the electric motors and their new 8 speed automatic could be better.

Conclusions

Mazda is the second bestselling brand in Australia and in the first half of the year is just ahead of last years sales, but for the month on June they have performed particularly well.

They strive to reach a wide range of customers from their “zoom- zoom” appeal to a reputation of solid dependability.

The CX-60 is pitched at the premium market where Mazda is unashamedly aiming for. It is overall appearance and interior suits that image while its new engines have a spirited performance.
