Polestar and fast-charging battery pioneer StoreDot have successfully demonstrated the implementation of StoreDot’s Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology in a car for the first time, charging a Polestar 5 prototype from 10-80% in just 10 minutes. The fully driveable verification prototype saw a consistent charge rate starting at 310 kW and rising to a peak in excess of 370 kW at the end of charging.

This world-first demonstration of a 10-minute 10-80% extreme fast charge using silicon-dominant cells in a driveable vehicle – rather than individual cells in a laboratory environment – is the continuation of Polestar’s commitment to developing the best driving experience for the future through innovative technology partnerships. The specially commissioned 77 kWh battery pack – which has the potential to be increased to at least 100 kWh, could add 320 km of range to a mid-sized electric car in 10 minutes.

XFC test by Polestar and StoreDot battery engineers

This XFC test by Polestar and StoreDot battery engineers was designed to demonstrate proof-of-concept for XFC battery technology that could be applied to future Polestar vehicles.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, says: “Time is one of life’s greatest luxuries, and as a manufacturer of luxury electric performance cars, we need to take the next step to address one of the biggest barriers to EV ownership – charging anxiety. With this new technology, on longer journeys when drivers do stop they’ll be able to spend less time charging and be back on the road faster than before. In fact, that stop time will be more akin to what they experience with a petrol car today.”

StoreDot’s revolutionary XFC technology utilises silicon-dominant cells with an energy density on par with state-of-the-art NMC cells, and does not require specialist cooling systems in the vehicle. The experimental XFC battery’s modules have a structural function which, improves mechanical properties and cooling ability while maintaining or reducing weight levels, with high recyclability and serviceability also paramount in the design of the pack.

commercial EV batteries, fast charging rates can vary greatly

In today’s commercial EV batteries, fast charging rates can vary greatly depending on the battery’s state of charge (SOC), sometimes dropping significantly as SOC increases. During this test, Polestar saw charging speed rise from 310 kW at 10% SOC to over 370 kW at 80% SOC, proving the technology’s steady charging rate with no significant change in charging speed or efficiency whenever a driver decides to stop within this wide state-of-charge range.

Importantly, the test proves XFC technology works with today’s DC charging infrastructure, which continues to feature more high-power DC chargers of 350 kW or higher.

This means drivers will be able to spend less time stopped to charge their vehicle, which for a 10-80% charge on many modern EVs could still take around 30 minutes. By reducing that time to 10 minutes, the charging time for a vehicle with XFC technology is much closer to what you would experience when filling a car with petrol. And thanks to the consistent charge speeds on offer, with a suitable charger, consumers could stop for five minutes at 50% SOC and continue their journey with over 80% SOC.

Dr Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, comments: “We are very excited to share this impressive achievement today and proud to be on this journey with Polestar. Polestar’s commitment to acknowledge that extreme fast charging technology is necessary to make widespread electric car adoption a reality. This breakthrough revolutionises ownership by eradicating the barrier of range and charging anxiety once and for all as drivers will be able to travel long distances with the same freedom and convenience as traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles.”

StoreDot silicon batteries will enable smaller battery packs capable of extreme fast charging, leading to more accessible electric vehicles

StoreDot’s Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology will enable EV car manufacturers to design lighter EVs with smaller battery packs

XFC also means drivers needn’t worry about distance between charges or charging times allowing OEMs to rethink EV range and corresponding specifications

The result will be improved car efficiency, increased utilization of regenerative braking, reduced carbon footprint and lower costs allowing EVs will serve a broader audience

Downsizing an EV’s battery pack from an average of 80kWh to 50kWh, could save about 200kg from the EVs weight (equivalent to 3-4 people) and reduce the cost of manufacturing the car by about $4,500, depending on metal cost fluctuations and energy density improvements

StoreDot remains on target for mass production readiness of ‘100in5’ silicon battery cells next year delivering at least 100 miles of range for each 5 minutes of charging

Silicon Batteries

StoreDot, the pioneer of extreme fast charging (XFC) battery technology will soon be manufacturing silicon batteries that enable car makers to design and produce cheaper, lighter and more sustainable EVs.

With the optimal driver experience of extreme fast charging in mind, StoreDot’s technology has reached sufficient charging and discharging cycles that it will enable vehicle manufacturers to include a smaller battery pack. Smaller packs with XFC translate into improved EV specifications including better car efficiency, increased utilization of regenerative braking, reduced carbon footprint and lower costs. As a result, such affordable and lighter EVs will serve a broader audience and further enhance the adoption and transition to EVs.

StoreDot is now on track to deliver its 100in5 silicon-dominant extreme fast charging batteries to EV OEMs by next year. This transformative technology will deliver 100 miles, or 160 km of range in just five minutes of charge. As a result, EV drivers will no longer need to worry about the range between charges, or charging times, allowing car makers to re-evaluate the specifications of electric vehicles. With StoreDot’s XFC technology, OEMs will be able to optimize a vehicle’s weight and cost, rather than pushing for ever greater range and battery size.

Downsizing from an average premium vehicle requiring an 80kWh to a 50kWh battery pack could save approximately 200kg from the EV’s weight (the equivalent weight of 3-4 people) and importantly, could reduce the build cost of the car by $4,500, depending on metal cost fluctuations and energy density improvements*. The environmental impact of such a design change will be highly significant too as it will lower amount of raw materials used in each vehicle, reducing its EV carbon footprint throughout its lifecycle. XFC in smaller packs also means efficient regenerative braking as it can accommodate the corresponding recuperated high currents.

Dr Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot CEO:

“Up until recently OEMs were increasing the size of battery packs in their EVs because a proportion of drivers were transitioning from gas to electric for the first time with the known ‘range anxiety’ in their minds. Those drivers, and anyone who is an EV advocate now realize that range anxiety is no longer the most pressing issue – and won’t even be an issue at all once public charging infrastructure around the world is properly in place.

“The two remaining barriers to EV ownership are charging anxiety and cost, and StoreDot’s XFC solution was designed to assist with both. Radically reduced charging times will allow automotive manufacturers to rethink how they approach battery size and range. When charging times are no longer an issue, it makes a lot more sense to fit smaller battery packs. The cost savings could transform the accessibility of EVs and sustainability of batteries, with better car efficiency, fewer raw materials needed and less recycling at the end of their in-vehicle life.”

StoreDot’s groundbreaking XFC battery cells are now being tested by over 15 global automotive manufacturers, while the company continues to develop its manufacturing partnerships on a global scale.

StoreDot, the pioneer of extreme fast charging battery technology for electric vehicles, is encouraging global electric vehicle manufacturers to adopt more of a start-up mindset in order to bring transformational charging technologies onto the market quicker. boost EV sales

StoreDot is now on track for mass production readiness of its 100in5 silicon-dominant extreme fast charging batteries next year, delivering a range of 100 miles (160 km) in just five minutes of charge. StoreDot’s XFC battery solution solves the key ‘charging anxiety’ barrier to EV mass adoption. However, the company’s CEO is urging some automotive manufacturers to re-evaluate their traditional technology introduction timelines in order to accelerate the adoption of these game-changing batteries into new vehicles, benefitting customers while enabling a swifter uptake of EVs.

Traditionally, global car companies are locked into sequential prototyping and testing processes with timescales that fit the familiar long cycles of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle development. However, leading car companies can embrace new practices and leverage a swifter development mode enabling the introduction of the latest technologies to market faster through collaborations with startups and scaleup-ready businesses such as StoreDot.

Dr Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot CEO “We are working with many global OEMs and it’s clear that some are already changing their mindset to adopt advanced battery technologies faster. But not every OEM behaves like this, and I believe the entire EV industry will benefit from accelerating its processes and timelines if we are going to collectively undertake the seismic shift to electrification that the world needs.

“With a typical 5-year cycle to implement any new battery technology, we are encouraging global automotive manufacturers following traditional processes to adjust their methods and mindset to more agile business practices when evaluating and implementing innovative technologies. Testing of new technologies such as StoreDot’s Extreme Fast Charge – XFC – cells can be a strict, sequential, and laborious process that assumes a certain level of technology maturity. The upshot is that our game-changing batteries might not get into the hands of car buyers in a timely fashion. As charging anxiety is one of the main barriers to EV adoption, such conservative processes can have consequences for the entire battery and vehicle ecosystem and its ability to vastly and quickly improve the world in which we live.

“Of course, car makers must not ignore crucial elements such as safety and reliability testing, which are a given. But in my experience, some OEMs are still rigidly sticking to testing regimes that hinder the ability to take advantage of battery breakthroughs. Some parts of the automotive industry are currently being held back and will continue to be so unless we all adopt the agility of start-up concurrent engineering practices.”

StoreDot’s ‘100inX’ strategic technology roadmap remains on track and with better OEM process alignment it can reach the market faster. XFC technology features 100in5, 100in3 and 100in2 of miles per minute of charging – three generations of StoreDot technologies of silicon-dominant anode, semi-solid-state and post-lithium. The roadmap confirms that the timings for these to enter mass production and adoption will be delivered over the coming decade with 100in5 to be commercially ready as soon as next year, 100in3 by 2028 and 100in2 by 2032.

StoreDot’s XFC battery cells are currently being evaluated by 15 global automotive manufacturers.

StoreDot demonstrates the exceptional performance of silicon-dominant extreme fast charging battery cells capable of charging over 1000 consecutive cycles, in production ready EV form factor

Cells are now being shipped to StoreDot’s global automotive OEM partners for testing with further improvements expected by the end of the year

The 300Wh/kg, 700 Wh/l XFC cells are being shipped in pouch format

StoreDot remains on target for mass production of ‘100in5’ cells by 2024 delivering at least 100 miles of range in just five minutes of charging

StoreDot, the pioneer of extreme fast charging battery technology for electric vehicles, has proven the superior performance of its extreme fast charging battery cell technology by delivering cells that have exceeded 1000 cycles in production ready EV form factor.

The 300Wh/kg, 700 Wh/l high energy density cells are being shipped in pouch format to StoreDot’s global automotive OEM partners for intense real-world testing. The cells exhibit the promised ‘100in5’ EV performance, allowing drivers to charge consecutively 100 miles of range for each 5 minutes of charging.

StoreDot’s ‘100in5’ cells repeatedly charged from 10 to 80 percent capacity in just 10 minutes and then discharged for one hour before recharging. The EV cells achieved over 1000 of these extreme charging cycles consecutively before degrading below the 80 percent of the original capacity threshold. No noticeable degradation occurred within the first 600 cycles in which the cells were consecutively fast charged between 10 to 80 percent.

This landmark milestone follows StoreDot’s announcement in March that it had set a world record of 1200 cycles for its extreme fast charging cells in prototype format. StoreDot continues to develop the XFC technology in both cylindrical and prismatic form factors with updates expected soon on shipping those to OEM partners.

Yaron Fein, StoreDot Vice President R&D: “The latest tests represent a landmark not just for StoreDot, but also the global battery industry and the entire sustainable mobility ecosystem. Our product performance goal for 2022 was to reach 1000 cycles of consecutive extreme fast charging of 10 to 80 percent in ten minutes, with an energy density of at least 300Wh/Kg.

“I am delighted to announce that not only have we achieved our target but have also exceeded it – and we already have in our labs enhanced formulation that allows us to show further improved performance. This is the first time ever that cell performance of this magnitude has been achieved. The results stand testament to StoreDot’s relentless R&D drive, the enthusiasm of everyone in the company and to the Extreme Fast Charging vision we share with our partners.

“When a lithium battery is charged and discharged once, it is called a cycle, and typically lithium battery capacity degrades quickly in fast charging cycles. Our silicon-dominant chemistry is different, allowing EV battery cells to charge for more than 1000 cycles before degrading the battery to 80% of its original capacity.”

StoreDot remains focused on delivering its hype-free technology roadmap to global automotive companies. This relentless development program extends far into the future, where the target is to deliver 100 miles of range after just 2 minutes of charge within a decade.

StoreDot gives automotive manufacturers a clear, realistic technology roadmap for solving the Range Anxiety barrier to help create a cleaner world

Extreme fast-charge multi-patented battery technologies with proven battery chemistry can now be applied to any cell format, including the 4680 family form factor

StoreDot, the pioneer of extreme fast charging (XFC) battery technology for electric vehicles, has revealed its strategic technology roadmap, labeled ‘100inX’, which will deliver batteries capable of charging a 100 miles of range on just a 2 minute charge, with mass production readiness planned within 10 years.

StoreDot is also firmly on track for its first milestone for global automotive manufacturers: producing its silicon-dominant anode XFC lithium-ion cells at scale by 2024 that will be capable of delivering 100 miles of range in 5 minutes of charge.

In parallel, StoreDot is already at the advanced stages of developing groundbreaking semi-solid-state technologies which will further improve the batteries by 40% over 4 years – delivering 100 miles of charge time in just 3 minutes and be mass production ready by 2028.

100in5, 100in3 and 100in2 of miles per minute of charging are three generations of StoreDot technologies of Silicon dominant XFC, semi solid state and full solid state. They will be delivered over the coming decade with 100in5 by 2024, 100in3 by 2028 (40% improvement) and 100in2 by 2032 (additional 33% improvement).

Dr Doron Myersdorf, StoreDot CEO “It’s absolutely crucial that we give global automotive manufacturers a clear, realistic and hype-free roadmap for the introduction of our fast-charging battery technologies. After intense development of our silicon-dominant chemistries we will be mass-production ready by 2024, delivering a transformative product that will overcome the major barrier to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles – charging times and range anxiety.

“However, we are committed to a rapid transition to a cleaner, zero-emissions world and our strategic technology roadmap extends long after 2024, where each milestone represents an impressive performance improvement – a major impact on the driver’s experience. We are also progressing with our semi-solid state battery aiming for its production at scale by 2028, which will demonstrate a better charging experience for EV drivers in terms of miles per minute of charging.

“Our ultimate goal though, and one that is now absolutely in our grasp, is to produce cells that will revolutionize charging times, achieving 100 miles of range in only 2 minutes. This breakthrough performance that was once considered impossible – is achievable with StoreDot’s technology in just 10 years from now.”

StoreDot’s ground-breaking extreme fast charging cells will be available in both pouch and the 4680 family form factor – the formats increasingly favored by the majority of global car manufacturers. Pioneering work for these XFC cells has been undertaken with participation of global experts from Israel, the UK, the US and in China. ‘100in5’ cells of StoreDot’s XFC technology are already being tested in the real world by a number of automotive OEMs.
