Hammer Head Design Language Underpins Athletic New Camry Hybrid Styling

The new-generation Camry features a stylish, evolutionary exterior design based on Toyota’s dynamic Hammer Head design language, that offers a sportier and more sophisticated look to match the improved performance of the new Camry.

At 4920mm, the new Camry is slightly longer than the outgoing model by 35mm, while its 1445mm overall height, 1840mm width and 2825mm wheelbase remain the same.

The Hammer Head design, first seen on the bZ4X Battery Electric SUV and new C-HR introduced earlier in 2024, is immediately signified by the Camry’s C-shaped headlight cluster and forward-sloping bonnet.

Lighting

Daytime running lights (DRLs) frame the inner section of the headlight cluster to accentuate the dynamic C shape, with an upper grille section connecting the two headlights giving the new Camry’s front fascia a sense of width and solid presence.

The headlamp cluster on Ascent grades feature a combined high/low beam LED module on the outer section of the headlamp, while Ascent Sport and SL grades separate high and low-beam lights into individual modules. The DRLs on Ascent Sport and SL also double as the turn signals for a more integrated and premium appearance.

Illumination performance, especially the spread of light, has been improved over the outgoing Camry to provide a better view for night driving.

New look grill

A new-look lower grille features a stylish horizontal pattern which transitions to a diamond-shaped mesh around the outer edges to create a 3D-like effect that contributes to the Camry’s more aggressive stance. LED foglamps integrate neatly into the outer sections of the lower grille, completing the front lighting signature.

Racing-inspired functional air curtains and corner canards have been placed on the outer edges of the lower bumper, feeding air through to the wheelarches to improve the new Camry’s aerodynamics.

Further aerodynamic improvements have been achieved by reshaping the edge of the bonnet facing the windshield, along with the A-pillars and rain gutters, to give the Camry a more slippery shape.

At the rear, the taillights follow the Hammer Head styling profile with a C-shaped design matching the headlights, that are integrated with a sculpted rear-end to emphasise the width and solid stance of the car.

Wheels and Tyres

Both the Ascent and Ascent Sport are offered with elegant multi-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/55R17 tyres, while the flagship SL steps up to 18-inch alloys with a contrast dark and bright machined finish that provides a sporty and sophisticated look and are shod in 235/45R18 rubber.

The new Camry range is offered in a choice of eight exterior solid crystal pearl, metallic and mica metallic paint finishes across the range, consisting of Glacier White, Frosted White, Silver Pearl, Liquid Mercury, Eclipse Black, Jasper Red, Precious Bronze and Saturn Blue.¹

Improved Technology, Comfort And Elegant Design For Camry Interior

Along with the new-look exterior, the Camry’s cabin has also undergone a considered redesign which enhances functionality and usability and brings a new, artistic visual flair.

A unified interior feel is achieved through a consistency of high-quality materials across the seats, instrument panel and doors, paired with bright silver metal accents which further add to the premium ambience.

The new elegant dash neatly integrates the driver’s instrument cluster, multimedia touchscreen and climate control vents into a single stylish unit that flows seamlessly into the doors providing a wrap-around cosseting feeling for occupants.

On the passenger side, sculpted horizontal slats stretch across the dash into the multimedia unit, emphasising the width of the cabin and providing a special visual touch.

The lower edge trim of the dashboard on the passenger side cascades down into the centre console, matching the trims on the driver and front passenger doors to further emphasise the high-quality consistency in styling.

Drivers are provided with clear and easy-to-read information with a 7.0-inch colour digital instrument cluster on Ascent and Ascent Sport grades, which can be configured in six different display layouts to suit individual preferences.

These include casual, smart and sporty themes with a central digital speed readout surrounded by a circular dial that can be configured as either an analogue-style tachometer or hybrid system indicator.

Camry Hybrid SL

The Camry SL steps up to a 12.3-inch full digital display offering a broad scope of customisable vehicle information, with the choice of displaying no dial, a central tacho dial, or two dials – tachometer and speedometer – with a central digital speed readout.

Further custom options enable the driver to choose readouts and information showing navigation, fuel consumption, trip information, active safety systems and more.

The Camry SL grade also features a standard colour head-up display, which can be configured into four different modes ranging from a full display showing driving speed, speed limit and active safety information, to a minimalist configuration showing driving speed only.

A standard digital rearview mirror on the SL provides additional driver support by enabling the projection of an image of the rear-facing camera to enable a wide field of view unobstructed by rear occupants or headrests. The mirror can be easily switched between digital and glass mirror modes via a toggle switch at the bottom of the mirror.

All controls for the various head-up display, MID, multimedia, phone, audio and active safety functions fall easily to hand on the newly designed steering wheel, with a more expansive array of buttons to improve functionality.

The new steering wheel shape better fits in the driver’s hands with a soft-touch urethane finish on the Camry Ascent and leather-accented wrap on Ascent Sport and SL grades.

All models feature tilt and telescopic adjustment to gain the ideal driving position with the SL version gaining power adjustment and steering wheel heating functionality.

Toyota’s latest multimedia system

Complementing the host of advanced technology for the driver is Toyota’s latest multimedia system projected on to an 8.0-inch touchscreen display on Ascent grades. Ascent Sport and SL grades step up to a 12.3-inch multimedia screen with all screens offering higher contrast with direct bonding technology which removes a layer of air in the touchscreen to reduce glare and reflectivity.

This latest generation multimedia system features cloud-based satellite navigation, AM/FM/DAB+ radio, Bluetooth^® connectivity and compatibility with wireless Apple CarPlay^® and Android Auto. Audio comes in the form of a six-speaker system on Ascent and Ascent Sport, while SL versions receive a premium nine-speaker JBL^® sound system with 265mm subwoofer, providing clear and powerful audio playback.

Air Conditioning

Below the multimedia screen sits a simply laid out air conditioning control panel for the dual-zone automatic climate control system, which now features a more environmentally-friendly 1234yf refrigerant along with remote air conditioning function. Camry SL grades also feature Nanoe^® X air ionisation technology which is designed to improve air purity in the cabin and remove airborne bacteria, mould and viruses.

A mix of touchscreen functionality and physical buttons are used to control the multimedia and climate control system, providing users with a blend of simple, familiar operation and neat, seamless integration.

New design for seats

While the interior design of the new Camry offers a peaceful, calming ambience, occupant comfort has been enhanced with newly designed seats which have been engineered to provide support and reduce fatigue on long drives.

The new seats feature a modified seat cushion shape to increase the area of contact with the body to disperse sitting pressure and create a snugger and more comfortable feeling.

Ascent grade seats are upholstered in a high-quality fabric and offer six-way driver and four-way front passenger manual adjustment. Ascent Sport grades provide additional convenience with eight-way power adjustment with lumbar support for the driver seat.

Camry SL extends the same power upgrade to the front passenger seat, along with leather-accented upholstery and a seat and steering wheel position memory function for the driver.

The flagship SL provides even greater comfort for occupants with three-stage heated and ventilated front seats while ingress and egress is made easier with an automatic slide-away function that pushes the seat to its rearmost position when the driver enters and exits the vehicle.

Storage compartments

Between the front seats, the Camry’s centre console offers plentiful amenity for occupants with a pair of cupholders, console tray, 7-litre console box and, on Ascent Sport and SL grades, a 15W wireless smartphone charger⁷.

Other charging options include two USB-C charging ports, one USB data port, a 12V socket inside the console box, and two more USB-C ports for rear passengers.

Along with the 7-litre centre console box, other storage options in the Camry cabin include front and rear door bins capable of holding a 600ml bottle or tablet, and two extra rear cupholders in the centre drop-down armrest.

The boot offers a generous 524-litre luggage area which can be further expanded by folding the 60:40 split-fold rear seats.

First 5th-Gen 2.5-Litre Hybrid Electric Powertrain In Australia

The new Camry becomes the first Toyota vehicle offered in Australia with the fifth-generation 2.5-litre Hybrid Electric powertrain that delivers significant improvements compared to the outgoing Camry model.

New Hybrid Electric powertrain, standard on all three Camry grades, has been designed to deliver enhanced performance with improved throttle response and controllability, increased output, reduced weight and lower fuel consumption.

The new generation Hybrid Electric powertrain combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a hybrid transaxle incorporating a pair of electric motor generators, and a lithium-ion hybrid battery, to drive the front wheels.

All elements of the Hybrid Electric system have undergone modifications and refinement resulting in a peak combined power output of 170kW, an increase of 10kW over the outgoing Hybrid Electric Camry, while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

All Camry grades offer remarkably low combined fuel consumption of just 4.0 litres per 100km¹, which is impressively replicated in both the urban and extra-urban cycles.

CO2 emissions have dropped below 100 grams per km across the entire range, with each grade recording average emissions of 91 grams of CO2 per kilometre

hybrid transaxle has undergone significant revisions

The hybrid transaxle has undergone significant revisions to improve efficiency and reduce its size and weight.

Differential gears for the transaxle have been downsized, lubricated with new transaxle oil which offers 50 per cent lower viscosity than automatic transmission fluid in the normal operating temperature range (20°-50°).

A new dry sump construction allows for significantly less transmission fluid to be required, thanks to the use of a differential ring gear-driven oil pump and resin lubrication pipe which efficiently distributes oil through the transaxle’s gears.

The weight of the transaxle case has been reduced by 20 per cent thanks to the use of computer aided engineering.

Hybrid Electric system makes use of a new compact multi-axis motor generator

The fifth-generation Hybrid Electric system makes use of a new compact multi-axis motor generator mounted on the front axle, which offers increased output over the outgoing generation while providing a more compact construction.

A newly developed magnet and electromagnetic steel plate is used for the motor generator, while the number of magnets inside the motor have doubled from three to six to help increase overall output to 100kW and 208Nm.

The more powerful motor generator helps reduce the required output of the petrol engine, which contributes to a 300-500rpm reduction in engine speed during acceleration, making for a natural feeling of acceleration with lower noise levels.

Power for the motor generator is facilitated by a compact 4.0Ah lithium-ion battery mounted underneath the rear seats, with cooling provided by a duct and blower under the left rear seat that enhances reliability and performance of the battery.

The power control unit in the fifth-generation Hybrid Electric system features a double-sided cooling system which reduces loss reduction rates by 7.8 per cent, contributing to reduced overall fuel consumption.

A range of improvements have also been made to the Camry’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, resulting in an increase in maximum power output of 7kW compared to the previous Hybrid Electric model, with the upgraded A25A-FXS engine producing a maximum 138kW of power at 6000rpm, and peak torque of 221Nm available from 3600-5200rpm.

Extra low-friction engine oil helps enhance fuel economy by retaining low friction in a range of temperature ranges and usage conditions while the adoption of D4S direct fuel injection – replacing the previous port injection – also helps improve efficiency.

The Camry’s engine makes use of dual variable valve timing with assistance from an electric motor on the intake side (instead of oil pressure) to improve both fuel economy and engine output.

Exhaust systems

Modifications have also been made to the cooling and exhaust systems including a variable cooling system to aid engine warm-up, with a radiator air guide fitted between the radiator grille and cooling system to efficiently channel the air into the radiator.

The new exhaust system features a three-way catalyst that cleans hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide at the same time, helping to reduce tailpipe emissions.

CVT Transmission

The fifth-generation Hybrid Electric system drives the front wheels via an electronic continuously variable transmission, with three drive modes on offer, consisting of Normal, Eco and Sport mode, along with an EV mode which allows the Camry to be driven solely on EV power over short distances and at low speeds.

Along with improvements to output, weight reduction and efficiency, the fifth-generation Camry Hybrid Electric system has also been engineered to offer drivers improved throttle response and easy controllability.

In the new Camry, the Hybrid Electric system can maintain maximum drive force for longer as the vehicle speed increases, helping to provide an improved feeling of continuous acceleration.

The system also detects the uphill/downhill gradient of the road surface and tailors acceleration and deceleration to suit the situation at hand to make driving as smooth as possible.

Chassis Refinements Improve Driveability, Quietness Of Camry

The new-generation Camry is underpinned by the rigid and lightweight TNGA-K platform, offering a range of improvements to the new model’s chassis and drive components to provide a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

Engineers have reinforced the rigidity and sound protection of the Camry’s body with a range of upgrades including the fitment of brackets and braces on the underfloor crossmembers, and repositioning of the rear-seat belt anchor fastening points which better helps occupants get out of the vehicle in the event of a collision.

Tie-down holes in the undercarriage have been eliminated to enhance anti-corrosion performance, while extra sealing around the doors, windows and windshields reduces the impact of wind and road noise.

Suspension details

The Camry’s MacPherson-strut front and multi-link rear suspension systems have been revised and retuned to provide an ideal blend of ride comfort and handling performance.

The coil springs and shock absorbers have been retuned for each individual grade, while the front suspension features a resin case for the strut bearing for a more direct driving feel. Front and rear axle hub and bearings have been optimised with improved rigidity, further bettering the Camry’s handling response.

Steering feel and responsiveness

High-quality steering feel and responsiveness comes courtesy of a rack parallel-type electric power steering system with increased rigidity for the gear box and steering column support providing a more direct feel.

Vehicle speed sensitive power assistance provides a light steering feel at low speeds and responsive feel at higher speeds, facilitated by a motor control unit which senses steering torque to provide the variable steering feel.

Two of the four steering gear box installation points are connected to the suspension member without the use of a rubber bush which improves turning responsiveness.

Braking

A new electrically controlled braking system has been introduced on the new Camry featuring a pump motor which creates on-demand pressure to better provide brake feel and control.

The brake system’s new hydraulic booster uses sensors to detect how much the driver is depressing the brake pedal, and finely controls the braking force between regenerative braking and hydraulic brake force to maximise energy recuperation while allowing natural brake feel.

Latest Active Safety Technology, Toyota Connected Services Makes Camry More Advanced Than Ever

Active safety technology has been enhanced on the new Camry with the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense¹ driver assistance features, introducing new systems as well as improvements to existing technologies.

Helping facilitate the improvements are a new camera sensor with a much broader scope of view and object detection, improved forward millimetre wave radar sensor, and the addition of two radar sensors scanning the outer front and sides of the vehicle.

The pre-collision system with autonomous emergency braking has been enhanced with improved detection, designed to be able to identify and brake for motorcycles as well as vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, the latter of which are also now recognised at night.

If the pre-collision system detects the possibility of a collision, it will issue audible and visual warnings encouraging the driver to brake. If the driver begins to brake, the system may add additional braking pressure if it determines a collision is possible, and will forcibly depress the brake pedal if the potential for a collision is high while also maintaining brake pressure once the vehicle comes to a stop.

Intersection collision avoidance support

Intersection collision avoidance support, which previously supported the detection of pedestrians and oncoming vehicles when turning at an intersection, now also detects vehicles crossing laterally at an intersection to further reduce the likelihood of a collision.

The engineers added acceleration suppression at low speed on the new Camry, which is designed to detect a potential collision if the driver strongly depresses the accelerator in front of obstacles while driving slowly, such as in a parking lot.

If the situation meets the parameters, the system will restrict drive force and control the brakes.

Active cruise control

Further enhancements have been made to the active cruise control, including increasing the number of preceding vehicle distance settings from three to four, while also providing smoother deceleration and acceleration when approaching and overtaking a preceding vehicle.

The system now also features turn signal-linked control, which when following a preceding vehicle travelling slower than the set speed will begin preliminary acceleration when the driver activates the turn signal in anticipation of overtaking, making for a smoother and more natural driving experience. If a vehicle is detected in the overtaking lane, the Camry will not add acceleration.

Likewise, if the Camry activates its turn signal to change into a lane with a preceding vehicle travelling slower than the set cruise control speed, the system will begin preliminary deceleration before moving into the adjacent lane.

The active cruise control system is also linked with the road sign assist, designed to detect speed signs and offer the driver the option to instantly change the set vehicle speed to reflect the speed limit.

Curve speed reduction is now activated earlier when the system detects the vehicle needs to reduce speed to safely navigate a corner, making for a smoother drive experience.

A new driver monitor camera mounted on the steering wheel above the steering column is designed to check the status of the driver, issuing alerts if it detects that the driver is distracted.

Lane functionality

When the lane trace assist (LTA) function is activated, and the driver monitor camera detects that the driver is not responding to repeated prompts or alerts, the system in the Camry slowly brings the car to a halt and activates the hazard lights.

Lane departure alert (LDA) also offers a driver monitor linking function and warns of a possible lane departure earlier if it detects that the driver is distracted.

The engineers enhanced the overall LDA function to prevent any intervention from the system if it judges the driver has deliberately left its lane to avoid a roadside obstacle, but they designed it to issue alerts and provide steering input to keep the Camry inside its lane.

LTA keeps the Camry centred within its lane and takes into account obstacles in adjacent lanes and on the roadside such as cyclists. When vehicles or cyclists are in an adjacent lane, LTA offsets its tracing position from the lane centre to ensure safe passing of vehicles in other lanes, replicating the behaviour typical of drivers.

Blind spot monitor that is standard across the range now includes a new safe exit assist feature, which is designed to help prevent collisions with cyclists and other road users when the driver is exiting the vehicle on the roadside.

Other Safety features

If the system detects another road user is approaching the Camry and a collision is possible, the right exterior mirror will illuminate. If the driver continues to open the door, the indicator will flash along with a buzzer and voice notification to alert the driver.

All new Camry grades come equipped with automatic high beam, which autonomously changes the high beams to low beam when it detects the presence of an oncoming car.

Excellent passive occupant protection is provided with eight SRS airbags including the fitment of a front centre airbag between the two front seats.

Rear seats offer ISOFIX anchor points for the outboard seats, along with top tethers for child safety seats.

Toyota Connected Services

Additional convenience for the customer is provided with the standard application of Toyota Connected Services, facilitated through a data communication module.

Connected Services offers customers a range of welcome and complimentary features through the Toyota Essentials package including
