Two-grade Toyota HiLux BEV range on sale in May, priced from $74,9901

All-electric HiLux available as a double-cab dual-motor AWD with SR and SR5 trim

HiLux BEV perfect for fleet customers looking to reduce tailpipe emissions

Joining the newly launched ninth-generation turbo-diesel HiLux range, the breakthrough HiLux BEV has been designed with government fleets, mining and construction sectors in mind, helping to reduce the tailpipe emissions of fleets while retaining the signature quality, durability and reliability (QDR) inherent in Toyota vehicles.

HiLux BEV is ready to tackle the harsh Australian environment

To ensure the HiLux BEV is ready to tackle the harsh Australian environment its diesel-powered sibling is so familiar with, Toyota has conducted a comprehensive and sustained testing program in collaboration with leading mining fleets.

These vehicles have been trialled extensively in real‑world, high‑demand environments, from hot temperature remote outback operations to off‑road terrains, providing Toyota with robust insights into performance, durability, and capability. This validation program reinforces Toyota’s unwavering commitment to quality, durability, and reliability.

HiLux BEV Models

The battery-electric HiLux is being launched in Australia exclusively with the double-cab body style and dual-motor AWD powertrain, in mid-spec SR guise and luxurious SR5.

The range opens with the SR double cab-chassis, with the SR pick-up body style also available from $76,4901. The flagship BEV grade is the SR5 pick-up, which asks $82,9901.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations John Pappas said the arrival of the HiLux BEV marked an important addition to Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to electrification.

“Offering both Australian businesses and private buyers the choice of a HiLux with zero tailpipe emissions is a crucial step forward in providing consumers the right powertrain for the right application, at the right time,” Mr Pappas said.

“This is an exciting time for Toyota; bringing in an electric version of the much-loved HiLux pick-up finally gives businesses and fleets the option of low-emission motoring mixed with Toyota’s extensive parts and servicing network.

“In fact, Toyota has already been testing the HiLux BEV for months on mine sites in temperatures nearing 50°C, ensuring the performance of this new powertrain matches the tried-and-tested HiLux diesel.

“Private buyers looking to make the switch to an electric pick-up now have the backing of Toyota quality, durability and reliability.”

HiLux BEV Performance

HiLux BEV is underpinned by a battery-electric powertrain consisting of a newly developed 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery and dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, providing strong and tractable driving performance.

The dual-motor AWD comprises a front motor producing 82kW and 206Nm, and a more powerful rear unit capable of 129kW and 269Nm of output.

Combined system output for the HiLux BEV is 144kW, with torque distribution variably controlled between the front and rear axles during on-road driving to provide high-traction full-time AWD.

For off-roading, Toyota’s sophisticated Multi-Terrain Select traction control system offers six different drive modes to suit the conditions underfoot, adjusting the amount of wheel slip to keep the vehicle moving in low-traction situations.

The 59.2kWh battery offers 150kW CCS2 DC charging capability, which can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 30 minutes. 10kW three-phase AC charging capacity can take the battery from 10 to 100 per cent charge in approximately 6.5 hours.2

Driving range for the pick-up grades is rated at 315km3 on the NEDC cycle, while the SR cab-chassis is rated at 245km.4

Suspension modifications

To accommodate the battery-electric powertrain, the HiLux BEV features its own, uniquely developed suspension system with frame reinforcements, beefed-up MacPherson strut front suspension and a De-dion rear leaf spring setup which accommodates the rear electric motor while retaining the live axle setup of the HiLux.

Ventilated disc brakes provide strong stopping power and energy recuperation via regenerative braking, while 2000kg of maximum braked towing capacity5 is offered across the HiLux BEV range.

HiLux BEV – Toyota has updated its HiLux range for 2026. Amongst the details were two bits of interesting information. They are releasing an electric HiLux in 2026 and there is a Hydrogen FCEV planned for 2028.

Toyota HiLux BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle)

As part of Toyota’s philosophy of providing solutions for buyers across many pathways, the HiLux BEV will be available mid-2026. It aimed mainly at fleet buyers. This includes the three levels of government that have to tick green boxes.

Available in double-cab 4×4 SR and SR5 guise, an electric motor will underpin BEV grades on each axle, paired with a lithium-ion battery. The company will reveal further details on the BEV powertrain closer to its local launch in H1, 2026.

As best as we can determine from overseas releases the details are as follows.

Powered by a 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery.

dual electric motors (205Nm front, 268.6Nm rear) providing “permanent all-wheel drive”.

715kg payload (approx.).

1600kg towing capacity (approx.); and

a WLTP driving range of approximately 240km.

As you can see from these estimated details, they won’t use the HiLux BEV for heavy duty work. It aims at light duty close proximity driving.

Now to the HFCEV – Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

Hydrogen has been mooted as an alternative for petroleum based products for some time.

A few manufacturers have dabbled with it over the years.

There are two key issues. The production of Hydrogen and the infrastructure.

Producing hydrogen is energy inefficient for the most part.

Second is the infrastructure. There are plenty of petrol stations around and hydrogen can easily replace LPG. However, that hasn’t happened and it’s a chicken and egg situation.

Toyota Australia has presented a range of exciting new production and concept vehicles showcasing Toyota’s diverse powertrain technologies, headlined by the HiLux Revo BEV Concept.

Alongside the HiLux Revo BEV Concept, the showcase saw Toyota present a number of new vehicles due to arrive in Australia over the next 12 months including all-new LandCruiser Prado, hybrid C-HR and fully-electric bZ4X, upgraded LandCruiser 70 Series, two new HiLux variants, and the RHD full-sized pick-up Tundra.

“The vehicles displayed at our showcase include a diverse range of electrified vehicle technologies, showing Toyota’s commitment to leaving no motorist behind,” Mr Hanley said.

“Whether it’s battery-electric vehicles, fuel-cell electric, or hybrid-electric, Toyota is dedicated to offering customers a wide range of powertrain options on the journey towards carbon reduction.”

HiLux Revo BEV Concept

For the first time on Australian soil, Toyota showed the HiLux Revo BEV Concept, hinting at the future of the HiLux in all-electric guise.

Originally unveiled in Thailand late last year, the HiLux Revo BEV Concept is an urban-focused two-wheel drive pick-up designed for short-range use, featuring a wealth of proprietary technologies under the skin.

The HiLux Revo BEV Concept is in Australia to take part in testing and evaluation on local soil to help further the development of alternative powertrain technologies in Australia’s favourite vehicle.

Toyota BZ4X

While the HiLux BEV remains a concept, customers will soon be able to purchase or lease Toyota’s first production BEV when the new bZ4X arrives in Australia in early 2024.

This will be the first of three production battery-electric vehicles due in Australia over the next three years further expanding Toyota’s electrified lineup.

All new C-HR

As Toyota continues to develop more battery-electric vehicles, it is committed to growing its hugely successful hybrid range and displayed for the time in Australia, the all-new hybrid-only second-generation C-HR.

The 1.8-litre hybrid front-wheel drive Koba and 2.0-litre hybrid all-wheel drive GR Sport were both on display showcasing the stylish new premium small SUV that is due on sale early in 2024.

Designed, engineered and built in Europe, the all-new C-HR makes significant strides in styling, technology and refinement, while doubling the content of recycled plastic used in the vehicle compared to the current-generation C-HR for a reduced environmental impact.

LandCruiser Prado Mild Hybrid

Further demonstration of Toyota’s growing electrification of its vehicles was evident in the display of a production HiLux and pre-production version of the all-new LandCruiser Prado, both fitted with 48-Volt Technology.

The 48-Volt Technology is combined with the 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission and comprises an additional 48-Volt battery, small electric motor-generator and other components to help reduce fuel consumption.

Both vehicles are due to launch in Australia in 2024 and the pre-production Prado prototype is being used for extensive testing across the Australian landscape.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid

Another vehicle on display demonstrating Toyota’s diverse approach to electrification was the full-size hybrid Tundra pick-up.

In a Toyota first, 300 Tundras will be converted to right hand drive locally by Toyota partner Walkinshaw Automotive Group and leased to selected potential customers for a real world evaluation and validation program.

Upgraded 70 series

Australia is a unique environment and Toyota remains committed to providing the right vehicles for all customers with the showcase providing a first in-the-metal look at the significantly upgraded LandCruiser 70 Series.

The upgraded 70 Series features updated styling and the new option of a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a six-speed automatic transmission – the first time this combination has been offered on the 70 Series range.

Toyota HiLux GR Sport

Joining the battery-electric concept and HiLux with 48-Volt Technology was the production HiLux GR Sport, the new flagship of the HiLux range offering improved performance in off-road conditions and a swathe of upgrades while retaining the HiLux’s strong 3,500kg braked towing capacity1.

More than just a set of visual enhancements, the HiLux GR Sport offers a wider wheel track with enhanced suspension, brakes and tyres, and improved performance from the tried and tested 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, with the new apex off-road grade arriving in local showrooms in September.

The broad range of vehicles and technologies within the Toyota stable that were on show demonstrate the brand’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions while providing the right technology for customers at the right time.

But Toyota’s development of new technologies and applications doesn’t end there.

Toyota Mirai FCEV

Toyota has been leasing a small number of Mirai FCEVs to progressive organisations for the past two years an its long-term investment in hydrogen fuel-cell electric technology may also offer an appropriate solution for zero-tailpipe-CO2-emission commercial vehicles.

In the UK, Toyota recently showed off a HiLux Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric Concept that uses the same Toyota FCEV system currently found in the production Mirai.

The system combines a 330-cell solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell stack, three high-pressure hydrogen tanks, a large lithium-ion battery, electric motor and rear transaxle.

In the Mirai, it develops 134kW/300Nm driving through the rear wheels, with the 5.6kg hydrogen tank capacity delivering a strong WLTP driving range of 650km2.

The hydrogen HiLux concept is currently being developed into prototype vehicles in partnership with the UK government, built at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Burnaston, England.

Along with hydrogen fuel-cell electric powertrains, Toyota is also developing internal-combustion engines powered by liquid hydrogen as seen in vehicles like the GR Corolla H2 race car as announced by Toyota Motor Europe earlier this year.
