Camry Hybrid – Toyota Australia has paused order-taking for variants due to extraordinary demand that has seen 90 per cent of customers of the popular mid-size sedan opt for the petrol-electric models.

Despite substantially improved supply since May across most of Toyota’s new-vehicle range, the broad appeal and high level of orders for these fuel-efficient cars has resulted in customer wait times remaining above two years.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the order pause decision demonstrated the company’s commitment to transparency by adopting measures that respect the deep trust placed in the Toyota brand by our customers.

“I want to assure all Toyota customers that we are doing everything possible to increase supply for Australia and to expedite delivery of vehicles as they arrive,” Mr Hanley said.

“Our global production teams have consistently adopted countermeasures that have improved the supply of components affected by global shortages, such as semiconductors,” he said.

“Throughout this journey, we are particularly humbled that our local customers have maintained their trust in Toyota and remained loyal to our brand,” he said.

In the nine months to September 30, new deliveries totalled 7,130 vehicles – of which 6,490 were hybrid variants.

Toyota RAV4 GXL Hybrid 2WD could be the perfect urban SUV. I spent a week in this car and its priced from $40,450 plus the usual costs.

Its well styled, not too big so it is easy to navigate our tight city streets and carparks, yet big enough for weekends away with friends if you like.

As an SUV you sit up higher and the body shape allows more luggage room than a sedan.

The RAV4 GXL Hybrid comes with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor generator that drives through a six step CVT.

As you would expect the economy is outstanding and we averaged around 5.0L/100K on our test.

The RAV4 GXL also comes with LED projecta headlights, LED foglights, Digital radio, illuminated door switches, rear seat reminder and LED interior lights.

Its no surprise that Toyota sells a lot of RAV4 Hybrids, they are easy to live with, economical, comfortable and practical. Pretty much everything a buyer will need.

Is the RAV4 GXL 2WD Hybrid the perfect urban SUV. Well that’s a big call but it’s pretty good.

Toyota RAV4 GXL Hybrid final thoughts

Like a lot of Toyota vehicles the RAV4 does very little wrong. It fits the criteria of lots of room inside for minimised exterior footprint.

It looks stylish and has held its style well. The lower spec hybrids offer good value and outstanding economy in a comfortable package.

Personally I would take the AWD version though for a touch added safety.

It no wonder Toyota sells a heap of RAV4 SUVs.

Unlike the Nissan Proto, the Toyota Rhombus concept is squarely aimed at changing the current style of vehicle. The exterior looks like something from the whacky races.

There are huge pods as the front that protrude out like the cheeks of trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie. The windscreen starts at the front of the vehicle and bulgers back to an A pillar in line with the steering wheel, which is in the centre of the car making only one front seat, obviously for the driver.

The main body is an elongated oval so there is only one seat at the very back but two small seats facing inward in the middle creating a lounge room pit style area.

The RHOMBUS is a battery electric vehicle concept car developed by TMEC, Toyota’s base for R&D in China.

The word Rhombus suggests a derivation not from an oval but from a square that is leaning over. In geometric terms a rhombus has equal length sides and opposite sides are parallel. For this reason, it is sometimes called a diamond.

Toyota said it plans to roll out more than 10 battery electric vehicle models globally in the next five or six years, with a sales target of more than 5.5 million electrified vehicles worldwide by 2030.

When the vehicle was first muted it was suggested that it could be a taxicab in Europe by 2021 but that was before COVID struck

In a move that highlights how old some motoring enthusiasts are getting and how the future is in the younger generations Toyota has said that the RHOMBUS aims to suit the values and lifestyles of drivers born after 1990.

Some years ago, Toyota had a top-down directive that they would no longer build boring cars. In saying this they accepted that this would mean that some people would like the deigns and some would definitely not like them. Based on the response at the Chicago Motor Show and on social media, the Rhmobus has achieved this result.
