For BYD, the MY26 ATTO 3 EVO represents that moment.

The popular mid-size EV SUV ushers in a significant evolution of the vehicle that landed BYD into Australian driveways in late 2022 and help transition the brand to where it is today.

A striking new exterior design, a completely refreshed interior, and the choice of two drivetrains broadens the appeal of the ATTO 3 EVO.

As before, two versions are offered: Dynamic and Premium. Same by name, but different by nature.

The front-drive Dynamic is equipped with a 60.48kWh BYD Blade Battery with 150kW and 310 Nm, delivering up to 420kms¹ of driving range according to the WLTP test cycle, reaffirming this variant’s strong practicality and daily driving suitability.

But this is where the ATTO 3 familiarity stops and a brighter light shines, with the ATTO 3 EVO Premium changing the game.  It parks its front-drive layout in favour of a more classical and engaging rear-drive configuration, injecting more driving fun and performance into the mix.

The flagship variant also features BYD’s acclaimed e-Platform 3.0 EV architecture, with a larger Blade Battery with 74.88kWh capacity and outputs of 230kW and 380Nm to produce a zero to 100km/h sprint time of 5.5 seconds.

The new e-Platform 3.0 EV architecture also doubles the system voltage to 800V and DC charging capability to 220kW, slashing the Premium’s 0 to 80 per cent state of charge (SoC) time to 25 minutes. The Dynamic grade retains its 400V architecture and 110kW DC charging capability.

BYD ATTO 3 EVO details

A new look for a new era

The BYD ATTO 3 EVO has the same external dimensions as the outgoing model at  4,455mm long, 1,875mm wide and 1,615 tall.  Wheelbase also remains unchanged at 2,720mm.

But its clothes are different. The Dragon Face theme remains, but the design is now more stylish, more contemporary, and more striking.

Stronger lines and angles dominate the front bumper and create greater depth, with the outer sides of the air intake dominated by a pronounced crease.

The daytime running lights now extend fully across the fascia, adding to the ATTO 3 EVO’s road presence. The overall look is more geometric and purposeful, but still unmistakably ATTO 3.

The visual transformation continues with a cleaner side profile. Most noticeable is the slimmer side skirts, now integrated smoothly into the side aesthetic.

At the rear, the trademark Chinese‑knot LED tail lights now stretch across the full width of the vehicle, producing a more distinctive presence at night. The rooftop spoiler also receives a new flared design at each end, with the integrated centre stop light transitioning from a single horizontal bar into more sporting vertical twin stripes.

The lower rear bumper, too, comes in for treatment. There’s a more distinctive swept up duck tail emerging from beneath, wider bottom tail light sculpted into the recessed outer bumper sections, and a cleaner number plate recess.

Panoramic sunroof and roof rails reinforce the ATTO 3 EVO’s contemporary positioning in its class, along with the one-touch power tailgate.

Both the Dynamic and Premium have their own exclusively designed 18-inch alloy wheels: the former adopting a dual-tone straight line design, while the top model gets a very stylish five-spoke with dual-tone swirls.

A completely reimagined interior

The ATTO 3 EVO also receives its most comprehensive cabin upgrade to date, with a renewed interior design, enhanced features and better use of space.

Evident from the driver’s seat is the column-mounted gear shifter on the right of the steering column, relocated from the centre console, creating more space and promoting a feeling of forward cabin openness. There is also a new steering wheel design.

The LCD driver’s dashboard screen increases in size from 5 to 8.8 inches for better legibility of key information and viewing of more vehicle functions.

The new interior also includes redesigned door panels, multi‑colour ambient lighting, split-type seats exuding a more sculptured and modern aesthetic, sunglass holder, rain-sensing wipers and a premium new grey interior tone, while wireless² phone charging power moves from 15W to 50W.

Dynamic grade offers exceptional value with standard features including six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats and eight stereo speakers.

Commensurate with the ATTO3’s Premium positioning, it receives dual-zone climate control and driver’s seat with four-way power lumbar support.

The packaging gains achieved with the rear-drive ATTO 3 EVO Premium allows for an extra 56 litres of rear boot space (from 434 to 490 litres), reconfigured to a superior 20 litres with the second row seats folded (from 1,340 to 1,360 litres).

The absence of a drive motor for the front wheels for the Premium has enabled designers to incorporate a new ‘frunk’ beneath the bonnet with a useful 101 litres of extra space – perfect for shopping trips or charging-cable storage.

ATTO 3 EVO Premium: new tech and classic excitement 

The ATTO 3 is known for its efficiency, practicality and value. And now with the ATTO 3 EVO Premium it adds something new: power and performance.

Driving aficionados simply love the balance, precision and thrill of a rear drive car; where the connection between pilot and machine is more natural, and the human response to vehicle dynamics is intuitive.

Together with the Premium’s larger 74.88kWh battery, it’s a reminder that even in an electric age, driving can still be fun.

With 230kW to the rear wheels along with 380 Nm of instant torque, this ATTO 3 EVO Premium completes the zero to 100km/h sprint in just 5.5 seconds. These are the type of numbers produced by homegrown Aussie V8 muscle cars from generations gone by – but without the guzzling fuel consumption.

The larger battery also extends the ATTO 3 EVO Premium’s EV driving range to 510kms¹ on the WLTP test cycle; the Dynamic with its 60.48kWh battery offering 420kms¹ on the same test.

The stronger Premium also an uprated 1,500kg³ braked towing capacity.

BYD’s remarkable Blade Battery

BYD’s Blade Battery design incorporates lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, with the design offering remarkable safety, durability and efficiency.

The ATTO 3 continues to offer both AC and DC charging options. The Dynamic provides up to 7kW per hour with a standard single phase AC connection, and 110kW with a DC fast charger – going from a 0 to 80 per cent State of Charge (SoC) in 41 minutes.

The Premium with its enhanced e-Platform 3.0 EV architecture offers 11kW AC charging and 220kW DC fast charging – achieving the same 0 to 80 per cent SoC in just 25 minutes – making rapid top-ups quicker and more convenient than before.

Both ATTOs come standard with 3.3kW V2L, supporting both everyday charging needs and flexible external power use – transforming this BYD into a mobile power source for tools, appliances, camping gear or emergency use.

Improved connected experience

In-car connectivity and user experience steps up a level with a cleaner screen interface, faster response to commands and a more intuitive location of vehicle and infotainment functions.

Operation remains user friendly with physical buttons maintained for often accessed vehicle functions.

With support for wired and wireless Apple CarPlay⁴ and Android Auto⁵, occupants can conveniently access navigation, phone calls, music and messages via familiar smartphone-connected environment.

The intelligent voice assistant makes everyday operation easier, with faster command response, and accurate voice zone detection or recognition to help reduce unwanted interference from other occupants.

The BYD App expands remote vehicle function access including door lock/unlock, A/C control, window control and vehicle location.

Safety for everyone

The ATTO 3 EVO builds on its proven safety foundation with new technologies designed to protect not just drivers, but families and vulnerable occupants.

The Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) has a new Child Presence Detection (CPD)⁶ function with in‑cabin senses to detect an occupant remaining in the vehicle after it is locked, triggering alerts within seconds.

The Driver Monitoring System (DMS)⁶ adds another layer of protection, identifying for signs of driver fatigue, distraction or unsafe behaviour and issuing timely alerts.

Physically, the Inster is tiny—measuring just 3.82 metres long, making it smaller than a Hyundai Venue. Yet, it arrives with a staggering proposition: a drive-away price starting around $35,990, wrapping unmatched urban practicality in a head-turning audacious design. In my experience, this isn’t just a budget EV, it’s a masterclass in clever packaging that will make you question why you ever thought you needed a larger car for the city commute.

What does the Hyundai Inster 2026 look like?

The Inster embraces a wonderfully charming, boxy “retro-futuristic” design. Built on the platform of the petrol-powered Casper sold overseas, it has a chunky, utilitarian stance with short overhangs that make it incredibly easy to place on the road. At just 1610mm wide, it can slip into parking spaces that would make other SUV drivers weep.

The highlight of the exterior is Hyundai’s signature pixel-graphic LED lighting. It gives the front and rear an unmistakable, high-tech glow at night. It rides on aerodynamically styled 15-inch alloy wheels (on this entry trim) that perfectly suit its quirky personality.

What is the Hyundai Inster 2026 like inside?

The interior is where the true magic happens. It’s almost as if IKEA designers were let loose in the cabin. The floor is completely flat, and the tall roofline (1575mm) means the sense of space completely defies the exterior dimensions. Being over 6″ often means there is not a lot of head room but in the Inster, I could comfortably wear a cowboy hat and still not hit the roof.

The materials utilize harder plastics for durability, but they are beautifully textured and styled, ensuring it doesn’t feel cheap. Crucially, the front seating area is exceptionally airy, and depending on your chosen trim, the front seats can even fold completely flat to accommodate long items like surfboards.

Storage

Practicality has been prioritized everywhere you look. There is an unexpectedly cavernous glovebox, clever trays carved into the dashboard, and a very neat centre console setup with multiple cupholders.

However, because the electric motor and crucial hardware sit under the bonnet (a front-wheel-drive architecture), there is no “frunk”. You do, however, get a handy hidden compartment under the rear boot floor specifically designed for your charging cables.

Rear seat and boot space

This is the Inster’s party trick. To maximize room, it is strictly a four-seater, meaning there is no cramped middle seat. Instead, the two rear passengers get immense amounts of legroom and headroom—genuinely enough for a 6-foot adult to sit behind a 6-foot driver.

The boot capacity is highly flexible thanks to sliding rear seats. With the seats pushed all the way back, you get 280 litres of space. Slide them fully forward, and that expands to a very usable 351 litres. Fold them completely flat, and you unlock a massive 1059 litres of cargo capacity.

Technology and connectivity

Stepping inside the Inster reveals a surprisingly sophisticated digital experience for its price. Visually, the dash features dual 10.25-inch displays—one for the digital instrument cluster and another for the central infotainment touchscreen. Functionally, the system is intuitive, highly responsive, and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to keep you seamlessly connected.

Complementing this digital array are tactile, physical buttons for your climate and basic audio controls. Consequently, it strikes a perfect balance between modern tech and everyday usability; indeed, you don’t need to dive into sub-menus just to adjust the fan speed while driving.

Beyond the screens, the car is packed with features usually reserved for larger, more expensive models. Evidenced by the inclusion of full Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing you to power household appliances right from the car.

Engine and drivetrain

The Standard Range model features a 42 kWh NMC battery feeding a single electric motor mounted on the front axle. It delivers a modest 71 kW of power and 147 Nm of torque.

While a 0-100 km/h time of 11.7 seconds won’t win any drag races, the instantaneous electric torque makes it feel much faster between 0-60 km/h in city traffic. It boasts a WLTP driving range of 327 kilometres. When you do need to top up, the DC fast-charging peaks at around 85 kW, which is enough to get the small battery from 10-80% in roughly 30 minutes.

What’s the Hyundai Inster 2026 like to drive?

To put it simply: it is an absolute joy in urban environments. Weighing just 1305 kg, it is extraordinarily light for an EV, which gives it a zippy, go-kart-like agility.

The steering is light, the visibility out of the tall glasshouse is superb, and it boasts a microscopic 10.6-metre turning circle. The suspension has been well-tuned for local conditions, meaning it soaks up speed bumps and potholes with surprising grace for a short-wheelbase car. It is the ultimate low-stress daily commuter.

Safety features

Despite its size and price, Hyundai has not skimped on safety. It features a comprehensive ‘SmartSense’ suite (though the speed limit chimes can be a bit zealous). Features include:

Forward Collision Avoidance Assist 1.5 alerts the driver and provides automatic braking assistance when there is a collision risk with a vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist.

The system uses the windscreen-mounted camera and front radar to detect sudden braking by the car ahead, or the presence of pedestrians or bicycles.

In addition, if, when turning into oncoming traffic at a junction, there is a risk of collision with an oncoming car, motorcycle or cyclist, INSTER will issue a warning and can apply emergency braking if needed.

High Beam Assist (HBA)

High Beam Assist lets INSTER scan the road for the lights of vehicles ahead, to automatically adjust the headlights from high to low beam and back, to avoid dazzling the occupants of other vehicles.

Highway Driving Assist (HDA)

Highway Driving Assist uses the windscreen-mounted camera, radar and navigation data, to assist the driver to maintain a set speed and distance from the vehicle ahead, while keeping INSTER centred in the lane, making long drives smooth and relaxed.

In-Cabin Camera (ICC)

The In-Cabin Camera monitors the driver’s face for signs of drowsiness or inattention. If the driver is not fully focused, it will provide an alert or initiate preventative action, to help avoid a collision.

Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA)

Intelligent Speed Limit Assist combines road sign recognition – using the windscreen-mounted camera – with navigation data, to inform the driver of the current speed limit.

If the recognised speed limit changes during Smart Cruise Control or Manual Speed Limit Assist operation, a corresponding increase or decrease speed message is displayed in the cluster prompting the driver to adjust the set speed using the +/- SCC steering wheel buttons, to stay within the speed limit.

Lane Following Assist (LFA)

Lane Following Assist provides steering assistance to keep INSTER centred in the lane. If the vehicle strays from the lane without a turn signal engaged, the system will issue audible and visual warnings.

Lane Keeping Assist – Line/Road-Edge (LKA-L/R)

Lane Keeping Assist uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect lane markings, the road edge, and vehicles ahead, to help keep INSTER centred in the lane by providing a warning or steering assistance as required.

Manual Speed Limit Assist (MSLA)

Manual Speed Limit Assist (MSLA) assists the driver in pre-setting a speed limit for the vehicle, which is helpful in situations with reduced speed limits, such as school zones or roadworks.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist underpins safe reversing manoeuvres in situations where the driver doesn’t have a clear view.

The system will alert the driver with sounds and visuals if a vehicle is approaching from either side and can automatically apply the brakes to help prevent a collision.

Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)

The Rear Occupant Alert system provides warnings to prevent the unintentional locking in or leaving behind of children or pets.

When active, the system detects the entry of occupants from the opening of the rear doors. Upon parking and opening the driver’s door, ROA issues an audible alert and displays a warning in the cluster, to ensure rear occupants are not left behind.

Safe Exit Warning (SEW)

The Safe Exit Warning system detects vehicles approaching from the rear to provide visual and audible warnings when it may be unsafe for occupants to exit the vehicle.

Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control – Curve (NSCC-C)

Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control can help the driver maintain a safe speed when driving on highways by automatically decelerating the vehicle or limiting acceleration when negotiating curves, as required, using curve data from the navigation system.

Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) – INSTER Cross variant

When a turn signal is activated, the Blind-Spot View Monitor presents a camera view from the corresponding side of the vehicle on the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Compared with conventional side mirrors, BVM provides a viewing angle that is approximately twice as large.

 Surround View Monitor (SVM) – INSTER Cross variant.

Surround View Monitor displays multiple views of INSTER to assist with manoeuvring, parking and driving.

These include 360-degree view, 3D view and top view with guide-lines, as well as car wash entering mode, driving rear-view mode and more, all designed to maximise driver confidence and convenience.

Reverse Parking Collision Avoidance (PCA-R) – INSTER Cross variant

Parking Collision-avoidance Assist-Reverse warns the driver if there is the risk of collision with a pedestrian or object while reversing into or out of a parking space and will assist with emergency braking if necessary to avoid a collision.

Parking Distance Warning (PDW-F) – INSTER Cross variant

The Parking Distance Warning system alerts the driver to the presence of pedestrians or objects in front of the vehicle, to help prevent a collision during low-speed driving.
