DEEPAL to show new models at Everything Electric

DEEPAL Australia is excited to announce the expansion of the model range with the highly anticipated DEEPAL S05 SUV and DEEPAL E07, a versatile SUV with Ute-like features, set to land in Australia in 2025.

This milestone represents a major step for those looking to make the transition to a New Energy Vehicle. With the E07 specifically ready to turn heads and reshape the future of automotive design through its multi-truck versatility and unique features it promises to be an exciting landmark year for DEEPAL in Australia.

Test Drive the Future at Everything Electric AUSTRALIA

From 7th to 9th March 2025, Everything Electric AUSTRALIA at Sydney Olympic Park will be your chance to get behind the wheel and experience the all-new DEEPAL E07 firsthand. The E07 is a revolutionary blend of SUV and Ute, and everything in between, citing a paradigm shift in automotive design and performance. Whether it’s the daily commute, family trips, outdoor adventures or weekend trip to Ikea or Bunnings; the E07 is rewriting the rules of what’s possible in the electric vehicle world for modern-day families with diverse needs.

Also on display will be the sleek and sophisticated DEEPAL S05, a new entry-point SUV in the DEEPAL range for the Australian market, showcasing DEEPAL’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and offering on our roads.

Cormac Cafolla, General Manager DEEPAL Australia, said:

“The S05 is the beautiful smaller sibling to the S07, making it a great choice for anyone who wants all the innovation and performance of our EV tech, but in a more compact package – it may be slightly smaller in size but as big in personality. Then there’s the E07; this one’s a real game-changer. It’s a unique mix of SUV and mini-truck, all wrapped up in a luxury trim for an unbeatable driving experience. I like to call it the automotive multi-tool, one that can take you on mountain trails, drop the kids off at school and still throw all your tools safely in the back.

“We’ll be sharing more specs later this year, but I can promise you, both the S05 and E07 are going to give Aussies some exciting, practical options for stepping into the future of electric driving without compromising on style or performance.”

S05 & E07 – Powertrain and Trim Options

These models meet the criteria (more details below) and are ideal for those looking to transition to sustainable transportation.

This scheme is a significant component of Queensland’s Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy, which aims to lower transport emissions and encourage the adoption of safer, environmentally-conscious travel solutions.

Eligibility and Requirements E-Scooter

The E-Mobility Rebate Scheme offers substantial financial incentives, allowing eligible Queensland residents to receive a rebate on the purchase of approved e-scooter models. To qualify, applicants must be 18 years or older, residents of Queensland, and must not have previously received the rebate. Businesses are not eligible for participation in the scheme.

To qualify, E-scooters under this rebate must be designed for single-person use. They must be equipped with handlebars for steering, and must not exceed a speed of 25km/h. Additionally, they must conform to specific dimensions: no longer than 1,250mm, no wider than 700mm, and not heavier than 60kg when unladen.

Application Process E-Scooter

Prospective applicants must purchase their e-scooter from Segway Online on or after 23 September 2024, and then visit the QRIDA website to submit their applications.

Applicants should be ready with the necessary documentation, including proof of purchase, charger identification, and evidence of residency. The rebates are distributed on a first in basis. So, anyone interested needs to apply as soon as possible. Funding is limited therefore riders are encouraged to get their applications in quickly.

You cannot apply as a business or if you have already received the rebate.

Benefits of the Rebate

The scheme significantly reduces the upfront costs associated with purchasing an e-scooter, offering rebates up to $200. Beyond financial savings, the shift to e-scooters helps decrease greenhouse gas emissions and alleviates traffic congestion.

The increased adoption of e-scooters also contributes to improved air quality and reduced noise pollution in urban areas like Brisbane, offering a convenient alternative to traditional vehicles.

Take Action Now

Purchase your e-scooter from Segway Online today, then visit the QRIDA website for further details or to apply for the rebate. By participating in this initiative, you’re not only saving on purchase costs but also playing a major part in a more sustainable future. With Segway, you can support a cleaner, greener Queensland with every ride.

Audi e-tron line-up to supercharge presence at Everything Electric this month, with first public showing of new Audi Q4 e-tron

Audi Q8 e-tron and RS e-tron GT will be on display and available for test drives throughout the event

Everything Electric Australia is on February 9-11 at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park

Audi Australia is excited to debut the new Audi Q4 e-tron at Everything Electric this February. This will be the first chance for the public to get up close and personal with Audi’s newest entry into the e-tron range.

The Audi Q4 e-tron will be joined on display by the Audi Q8 55 e-tron and the RS e-tron GT, both of which will also be available for test drives on-road throughout the course of the event.

Audi Australia welcomed a return to motor shows last year, attending Carsales Melbourne EV Show in September 2023. The event was a special opportunity to showcase the e-tron line-up and to connect with thousands of like-minded individuals and families interested in the electric mobility space.

The brand with four rings used the opportunity to confirm the Audi Q4 e-tron would shortly reach Australian shores, and thus it is fitting that just several months later, the model would be unveiled at an even larger event of a similar nature in Sydney.

Audi will attend Everything Electric Australia in full force this February, with an even larger display of cars and the opportunity for select test drives.

Audi Australia’s continued attendance and participation in events such as these are indicative of the brands’ unwavering commitment to electric mobility, and likewise, its growth in presence representative of the steadily growing range of electric vehicles in Australia.

Stand R10 at Sydney Showground

Stand R10 at Sydney Showground will highlight the all-new Audi Q4 e-tron, on display for the first time in Australia. Starting from $88,300*, the Audi Q4 e-tron will be available in two body styles and two powertrains with rear-wheel drive and quattro variants, providing customers with choice and uncompromised premium appointment.

Featuring innovative technology, electric efficiency and power, the Q4 e-tron combines luxury and everyday usability in a thoughtfully packaged small SUV. Arriving in the second half of 2024, this is the first opportunity for locals to see the all-electric SUV in person, with the opportunity to sit in the vehicle and ask any questions of the brand.

The Q4 Sportback e-tron

Q4 Sportback e-tron will be on display at the R10 Audi stand, while the SUV body style will be featured at Electric Alley. The Q4 e-tron is also joined on display by the Audi Q8 55 e-tron and the RS e-tron GT, both of which have been gracing Australian roads and Audi customer’s garages since launch in 2023.

These latest additions to the e-tron line-up deliver unparalleled luxury appointment, intuitive handling, and dynamic performance that attendees will have the rare opportunity to test themselves.

Everything Electric Australia boasts an EV Test Drive Experience, powered by Audi Australia’s partners at Origin Energy. As the biggest electric test drive programme in the Southern Hemisphere, there is opportunity aplenty for show-goers to get behind the wheel of a wide range of electric vehicles.

The all-electric Audi Q8 55 e-tron and the RS e-tron GT will be available for test drives on the roads surrounding the event venue during the event.

Visit Audi Australia and the new Q4 e-tron at stand R10, Sydney Olympic Park for Everything Electric Australia, February 9-11.

World EV Day – Unlocking more electric vehicles (EVs) means improved air quality and better health outcomes, reduced fuel costs, and better choice on low and zero emissions vehicles in the national market.

This World EV Day (Saturday, 9th September) is taking place as the Federal Government works out what fuel efficiency standards will look like for Australia, as part of the National Electric Vehicle Strategy, announced early this year.

Fuel efficiency standards are the key policy mechanism that will boost EV supply in Australia – and over time, ensure that all new cars sold are low and zero emissions.

Real Life Case studies

Oliver Wilcox, EV owner and NDIS service worker, drives a BYD Atto 3, and cites cost of living and environmental benefits as main reasons for the switch. He saw immediate savings from no longer needing to get petrol, and has saved on servicing fees. He uses his car to transport people around as part of his NDIS service provider work.

Jeremy Watson, owner of carbon neutral Brimbank Vets, has reduced emissions by driving an EV, switching off his gas supply and using rooftop solar. He says the last three people hired said they were attracted to the practice’s carbon policies, at a time when there’s a national shortage of vets. For much of the year using surplus rooftop solar power, Jeremy can charge his car to travel up to 400km for as little as $5.

Ben Lever, clean transport campaigner at Solar Citizens, has just completed an electric ute tour from Ballarat to Brisbane in Australia in the hope of showing that demand is there for EVs, the huge fuel cost savings that can be made, whilst highlighting the capabilities of electric utes. Ben can share anecdotes from the trip, and talk about how strong fuel efficiency standards can improve choice of low and zero emissions vehicles available in Australia.

Anneliese Alexander and her family own a Tesla which they have used on a long distance road trip, and plan on taking another trip in the later half of 2023, where she’ll be going to Lightning Ridge via Coonabarabran. They are looking to upgrade their EV from the Tesla Model 3 to Model Y, and will continue using their EV to go on frequent family camping trips.

Small Business – World EV Day

Anthony Broese van Groenou, co-founder, director and CSO of Good Car is a sustainability expert and PhD researcher and can speak to anything EV related, EV grid integration, the future of transportation and the current state of play in Australia, from policy to people.

Joseph Evans, runs Ballycroft Vineyard and Cellars, Joseph owns a 2019 Nissan Leaf ZE1, which he uses to power his house and winery at night, and lets his customers charge their own EVs on his winery’s solar grid. Joseph details his story in this video including his experience with vehicle to grid technology. He has his eyes on getting an electric ute and/or an electric tractor and can talk to barriers/opportunities in doing so.

David Stuart, – Owner of Colormaker Industries, which has three EVs, all powered off their 100 kW solar array. One EV is used for business deliveries, with the other two rotated amongst staff to help with their cost of living pressures and to help reduce their personal transport emissions during their daily commutes. Since installing solar and a battery on-site and incorporating these EVs, Colormaker’s annual electricity bill has dropped from over $24,000 to being in credit. Factoring in pre-EV petrol costs, the annual savings are over $30,000.

Russell Klose, electric vehicle importer of second hand cars, lives in Yackandandah and has seen many locals driving around in EVs as the whole town is on board with electrification. He says the best way for people to understand the benefits of an EV is to try driving one, so he loans out his own EVs for community members to try.

Health

Dr Kate Charlesworth, Climate Councillor and public health physician, can talk about the health impacts of transport pollution, and how implementing fuel efficiency standards is a practical and immediate way to make our transport system cleaner. As a mother with a young family, she is particularly concerned about children, young people, and expecting mothers’ exposure to high levels of transport pollution.

World EV Day Experts

Bryce Gaton, EV Educator and founder of EV Choice, has worked in the field and been the owner of an EV for over a decade, he can talk about the general transport transition to EVs, what to expect when purchasing an EV, and the need for strong fuel efficiency standards to support the supply and uptake of more affordable EV models in Australia.

Michael Day, National Treasurer of the Australian Electric Vehicle Association, drives a Tesla Model 3, an electric motor scooter for shorter commutes, and a converted electric sports car for recreation. He uses a home battery and solar system to help charge his EV. He can talk about what to expect when purchasing an EV, and the need for strong fuel efficiency standards to make EVs more accessible to Australian drivers.

Zapp Electric Vehicles Group Limited (NASDAQ: ZAPP) (“Zapp” or the “Company”), owner of a UK-based, high-performance two-wheeler electric vehicle brand, today announced it has been granted European patents for two components of its i300 electric urban motorcycle, which it anticipates will be ready for its first customer deliveries later this year.

The recognition from the European Patent Office relates to the i300’s Z-shaped exoskeleton and removable front fender. The grant of the patents highlights the innovative nature of the technology developed by Zapp to support the brand’s strategic vision, which encompasses the highest standards of design, performance, sustainability, manufacturing, and customer experience.

Zapp i300 exoskeleton

Zapp’s distinctive exoskeleton consists of two single-piece Z-shaped anodised aluminium components mounted on an underbone. It delivers a revolution in motorcycle chassis technology, and is central to the i300’s unique ability to combine the performance and dynamic handling of a motorbike with the step-through convenience of a scooter. The exoskeleton also endows the brand with its award-winning design language.

The fully recyclable Zapp exoskeleton solution provides numerous technical, sustainability, and commercial benefits. The two single-piece Z-shaped exoskeleton components replace a conventional-styled frame, which uses multiple connected tubes and welding points, allowing the vehicle to have a lower centre of gravity and lower weight, enhancing both handling and safety. The exoskeleton reduces the number of assembly components and also frees up space under the seat for storage. The Company believes the exoskeleton provides an ideal platform on which to base additional models and derivatives without significant additional investment.

Zapp i300 European Patents

Zapp’s second European patented component is the i300’s removable front fender, which brings a unique, almost infinite range of colourway personalisation options to the two-wheel sector for the first time. At any point after purchasing their i300, customers will be able to have the front fenders removed and replaced with new items in a colour of their choice. The personalisation upgrade will be carried out by an authorised ‘Zapper’ who will come to the customer’s home or workplace in a branded Zapp van, and perform the exchange. Going forwards, Zapp plans to collaborate with artists and leading cultural figures to create limited colourway collections.

The European patents (EP4058343 – ‘A seat-supporting structure for mounting on a motorcycle frame’ and EP4051563 – ‘Front fairing for a scooter’) further reinforce the world-class technology and design credentials of Zapp and its debut product, the i300 Carbon, which is now available to pre-order on Zapp’s website www.zappev.com.

Swin Chatsuwan, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zapp said: “The notification of not one but two European patents is enormously gratifying for Zapp and proves the innovative nature of the technology and design underpinning the brand’s i300 electric urban motorcycle. Our exoskeleton transforms two-wheeled chassis technology and is key to endowing the zero-emission i300 with the convenience of a step-though scooter and the dynamic performance of a larger motorcycle.

“Zapp’s patented removable front fenders will also revolutionise the two-wheeled vehicle category by offering customers a range of colourway personalisation options previously the exclusive domain of the supercar and hypercar sectors. The exoskeleton and the removable front fender are pivotal to Zapp’s determination to transform the two-wheeler segment with superbly designed, technically advanced, zero-emission, fun-to-ride products. However, these are just two of more than sixty novel technical aspects of the i300, which will further amplify the product’s considerable customer appeal as we move towards first deliveries commencing later this year.”

The DSDTC model has been designed to uphold Zapp’s core philosophy of ensuring its vehicles are ‘easy to buy and easy to own’.
Any servicing of the i300 will also be performed on-site at a location of the customer’s choice – whether at home, an office or somewhere else – by a Zapper in a Zapper van.

The platform is designed to ensure Zapp vehicles are ‘easy to buy, easy to own’, from the point of configurating and ordering a vehicle, through the entire duration of ownership. True to this mantra, Zapp’s omnichannel approach offers customers the choice of building and ordering their i300 electric performance city bike online or from one of Zapp’s authorised resellers.

Zapp plans to have a network of both online and physical boutique-style authorised resellers, in addition to its existing online configurator and sales platform on the Zapp website.

At any one of the global network of boutiques, customers can test ride the i300 as well as be aided through the configuration process by trained sales staff. Customers can also configure their bike and pay a deposit online if they prefer. The process is focused on making it simple and enjoyable for the customer.

Zapp’s agile manufacturing model means each i300 is built to order and delivered to customers in a ‘demand pull’ model rather than a ‘wholesale push’ model, which means authorised resellers do not hold stock from Zapp; rather they serve customer demand, offer advice and guidance, and provide test rides. Both the boutique-style authorised resellers and online authorised resellers will be paid a commission by Zapp after the customer receives their bike.

The demand-pull strategy ensures that only bikes that have been ordered are built, reducing materials and energy wastage, which is a key part of Zapp’s commitment to Gen-2 sustainability.

David McIntyre, Chief Commercial Officer at Zapp, said: “Zapp’s sales model has been devised every step of the way to make its vehicles both easy to buy and easy to own. We’re proud to offer a high level of customer convenience, from the point of configuration and purchase all the way through their ownership of the vehicle. Our agile manufacturing model means we can fulfil customer orders quickly and efficiently, which reduces financially wasteful and environmentally harmful wholesale stock build-up.”

Crucially, no matter how the customer opts to select their bike, it is ordered through Zapp’s global sales platform. Zapp implements a global pricing strategy, which offers customers assurance that they are getting the price offered on Zapp’s website. Customers can thereafter avoid having to deal with pushy salespeople or haggling, which many find off-putting in the traditional dealership-based automotive retail model.

As part of Zapp’s DSDTC model, the ZAPP i300 will be delivered to an address of the customer’s choice, wherever is most convenient to them. The bike will be delivered in a “Zapper van” and handed to them by a trained “Zapper” technician, who will provide a full handover of the bike. To increase customer convenience, any ongoing regular servicing of the i300 will also be performed on-site at a location of the customer’s choice – whether at home or an office, or somewhere else – by a Zapper in a Zapper van. Each Zapper van will be equipped with a full toolkit and spare parts inventory.

Zapp’s DSDTC sales model is being rolled out for Zapp’s debut product, the ZAPP i300 – an electric city bike that combines the convenience and agility of a step-through form factor with a high-powered electric motor for performance motorcycle levels of acceleration. This customer-first sales model will underpin each future product released by Zapp.

ZAPP EV i300

Zapp Electric Vehicles (Zapp EV) is set to debut its first model – the i300 high performance electric city bike – at Goodwood Festival of Speed. The first public outing for the i300 will include a run up the iconic Goodwood Hill on June 23rd, where it will showcase the innovative design and motorbike-like levels of performance that set it apart from other electric city bikes.

British company Zapp EV is on a mission to redefine the EV motorcycle segment, the run up the Goodwood hill for the i300 marks the beginning of its exciting journey. The i300 is the first in a suite of high-performance electric motorcycle products to come, each of which are designed and engineered to engage and thrill the rider in their appropriate environment.

Run by a team of experts from the motorbike and automotive industries, for its debut product, the i300, Zapp EV has evaluated what the urban rider needs – then looked at the very best materials and tech – to create something unique for those who don’t want to sacrifice fun on the daily commute or urban ride.

As a result, the i300 boasts motorbike levels of performance but in a step-though silhouette, combining ease of use with exhilaration and thrill.

Unlike other electric city bikes, the i300 is built around a unique exoskeleton architecture and is powered by an advanced British electric motor, which enables it to match the acceleration figures of performance motorcycles. Its lightweight alloy and composite bodywork bring total weight down to just 92kg (without batteries), while its interior permanent magnet (IPM) electric motor and carbon fibre belt drive accelerate the i300 to 30mph in 2.2s and onto its L3e-A2 limited top speed of 60mph in 4.8s.

With 14kW of peak power and a breath-taking 587Nm of torque at the rear wheel, the i300 offers best-in-class performance. Redefining how a city bike should look and ride, the i300 features pre-load and rebound adjustable pushrod rear suspension via a single-sided rear swing arm, upside-down front forks, full floating cross drilled front disk, four-piston radial mounted caliper, dual-channel ABS, and ultra-low-profile tyres.

ZAPP EV i300 No Range issues

Zapp EV didn’t set out just to make the best-riding electric city bike, it has also addressed the issues of range and charging anxiety experienced by would-be EV owners by developing an innovative double battery system. Fitted as standard on all i300 models are two attractive, easily accessible, ultra-compact portable premium LiNMC battery packs.

Weighing just 6kg each and offering a range of 60km*, they can be charged 20-80% via any standard 110/240v domestic socket in under 40 minutes, negating the need to seek out public charge points. With the average European city commute being less than 20kms a day round trip, the i300 is perfect for the urban warrior. Additional battery packs, home chargers and travel chargers are also available for purchase.

*based on WMTC

Zapp EV CEO Swin Chatsuwan said: “The Zapp EV i300 isn’t just another electric commuter, it’s a high-performance city bike designed to satisfy the needs of both serious motorcyclists and new riders alike. It is not only high-technology but also accessible and great value-for-money.

“It’s been an incredible journey to date, from the initial concepts of what a performance city bike could be right through to selecting and designing every component. To be able to showcase the finished bike here at Goodwood is an amazing opportunity for an emerging British company like ours and I’m really excited for everyone to see our bike up close.”

Zapp EV offers a wide range of personalisation options for i300. This year, six iconic British colours are offered for the front fender and three seat colours. These are also uniquely swappable. Other premium options include: diamond cut alloy wheels, other wheel colours, and other industry firsts: bodywork in NONA-carbon composite, NONA-natural composite, ocean recycled plastic; modular-interchangeable under-seat storage, and a range of other on-vehicle options and matching personal accessories. Altogether, with more than 2.5 million possible combinations, the i300 has been designed to embrace customer individuality.

The i300 can be purchased directly through Zapp EV’s e-commerce platform: zappev.com, with four versions to choose from:

i300 Carbon Launch Edition (nona-carbon composite bodywork, from £7,995)

i300 Carbon (nona-carbon composite bodywork, from £6,995)

i300 Bio (nona-natural composite bodywork, from £6,995)

i300 Ocean (ocean recycled plastic, from £5,750)

ZAPP EV i300 Purchase

Zapp EV operates an advanced direct-to-customer (DTC) experience called DSDTC (Drop-ship-direct-to-customer): once a customer orders their i300 online, it is then conveniently delivered directly to their home by “Zappers” in dedicated and liveried green plug-in hybrid (PHEV) service vans. Zappers also provide at-home inspection and support throughout vehicle ownership.

As part of Zapp EV’s full-stack e-commerce platform, customers will have access to highly competitive leasing and insurance solutions on a one-stop-shop basis, providing access to i300’s from as little as £99 per month and with a low deposit.

In addition to its appearance at Goodwood Festival of Speed, Zapp EV will soon announce dates where prospective customers can get up close to the i300, and book test rides at standalone boutiques and pop-up stores in London, New York, Paris, Milan, Seoul and Bangkok

E-scooters have become a familiar sight in cities worldwide in recent years, with many new companies renting them for use. But their arrival has also brought new safety concerns.

Now, researchers from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, present a framework for comparing how different micromobility vehicles, such as e-scooters, and bicycles move in cities, a methodology that can benefit companies and local authorities alike, and—most importantly—contribute to improving traffic safety.

In recent years, e-scooters have proliferated in cities worldwide, offering citizens a novel and convenient way to get around, but their arrival has not been frictionless. Commonly voiced concerns are that e-scooter riders break traffic rules, ride too fast, and park inappropriately. Perhaps most concerning is that crash databases, as well as insurance claims, show a clear and disproportionate rise in crashes as the number of e-scooters increases. Local authorities have sought to address these concerns through measures such as speed restrictions, requiring users to wear helmets, designated parking areas, and limiting the number of scooters or operators allowed in the city—or even outright bans.

“E-Scooters are not necessarily more dangerous than bicycles, but they are often perceived as such, possibly because of their unfamiliarity and the behavior of their riders,” explains Marco Dozza, Professor in Active Safety and Road-User Behaviour at Chalmers University of Technology, and lead author of the new study.

“While bicycling benefits from established social norms, regulations, and infrastructure, the same is not true for newer micromobility vehicles, such as e-scooters, Segways, monowheels, electric skateboards and so on. The spread and usage of these vehicles is only likely to increase, so finding ways to safely integrate them in the transport system is a vital and urgent challenge.”

To understand what makes riding new micromobility vehicles unsafe and how that compares to riding a more traditional bicycle, extensive data is needed. Scooter companies already have access to huge amounts of data, because they track every ride using GPS, but the quality of the data tends to only be useful for logistics and mapping services, while providing insufficient information about safety. Hospital admissions data and police reports may help appreciate the size of the safety problem—but cannot explain why crashes happen.

What is missing is a framework for collecting and analysing data to understand what makes rider behavior unsafe and causes the crashes. Now, Marco Dozza and colleagues present exactly this.

Two different strategies: braking or steering away

The researchers outline a process for data-collection in the field and analysis, that is intended to be repeatable and adaptable for different vehicles—from identifying useful test-maneuvers, to measuring and analysing the results of subsequent experiments. In their pilot study, the researchers compared bikes and e-scooters directly, equipping them with measuring instruments and testing the riders on various maneuvers, involving combinations of braking—both planned, and in reaction to a random signal—and steering at different speeds.

One of the most relevant findings of the new research was the fact that the braking performance of a bicycle proved consistently superior to the one of an e-scooter—offering faster deceleration and up to two times shorter stopping distance. In contrast, the e-scooter performed better during the steering maneuvers, involving a slalom through traffic cones—likely due to its shorter wheelbase and no need to pedal. The participants were also questioned about their experience and confirmed that braking felt more comfortable on the bicycle and steering more so on the e-scooter.

“The two vehicles showed distinct advantages and disadvantages through the different scenarios,” explains Marco Dozza. “We can say that the best strategy for a cyclist and an e-scooterist to avoid the same crash may be different—either braking or steering away.”

The results from these experiments may inform how the infrastructure might be designed to benefit all riders—for example, a winding path might be easier for e-scooterists than for cyclists, whereas a cyclist might find a narrower path, with low light less challenging than an e-scooterist.

“Of course, this experiment was small, and the data far from conclusive. However, it demonstrates the potential for field data to describe rider behavior and help understand the causes of crashes. With more data, we may reach a comprehensive picture of the rider behaviors that make riding an e-scooter safe which could help authorities devise innovative safety measures and motivate their decisions to the public,” explains Marco Dozza.

Potential application in smart future cities

The researchers will now, in collaboration with Scandinavian scooter company Voi, collect more field data to account for differences between riders and scenarios. Eventually, findings such as the one presented here could teach future automated vehicles and intelligent-transport-systems how to best interact with scooterists and cyclists by anticipating their behavior. Other safety measures that could be based on results from field-data analyses include dynamic geofencing—limiting the scooters’ speed depending on how crowded an area is, or the time of the day or week.

Voi were not involved in the research project outlined here in any form, nor any other scooter operator.
