Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) announced today it will pilot a RoboRide car-hailing service in Gangnam in Seoul, South Korea, utilising IONIQ 5 battery electric vehicles (EV) with in-house developed level 4 autonomous driving technology. The pilot RoboRide will be the first car-hailing service with autonomous driving vehicles to operate in Gangnam, one of the most congested areas in metropolitan Seoul.

For the pilot service, the Group has obtained a temporary autonomous driving operation permit from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) of Korea. It will collaborate with Jin Mobility, a Korean startup operating the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered car-hailing mobility platform ‘i.M.’. Jin Mobility will be in charge of operating the two IONIQ 5 RoboRide units on its i.M application. The Group also plans to expand the pilot service, while further developing autonomous driving technology with consideration for various conditions, such as driving stability.

“At Hyundai Motor Group, we are developing level 4 autonomous driving technology based on the internally developed Advanced Driving Support System (ADAS), whose functionally and safety are verified through mass production and successful commercial launch,” said Woongjun Jang, Senior Vice President and Head of the Autonomous Driving Center of Hyundai Motor Group. “We expect this RoboRide pilot service will be an important inflection point that will enable us to internalise autonomous driving technology.”

“We have been strengthening our capabilities by working on research and development with relevant institutions. Starting with the RoboRide pilot service in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group, we look forward to leading the future mobility scene,” said Lee Seong-wook, CEO of Jin Mobility. “We will put our utmost effort into creating synergies through this pilot service.”

Through this pilot, the Group expects to collect valuable autonomous driving data and plans to further develop the level 4 autonomous driving technology to navigate safely and flexibly in complicated urban environments.

To prepare for such a complicated driving environment, the Group has also worked with Seoul Metropolitan Government to establish a system that can connect traffic signals with autonomous vehicles. It has also gathered copious driving data since 2019 by testing autonomous driving in Gangnam area.

In addition, the Group will provide an in-house developed remote vehicle assist system to ensure safety. The system monitors autonomous driving status, vehicle and route, and supports the trip with remote assist functions, such as changing the lane under circumstances where autonomous driving is not feasible. Based on the level 4 autonomous driving technology, a RoboRide vehicle will perceive, make decisions, and control its own driving status, while its safety driver will only intervene under limited conditions.

The RoboRide pilot service will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., from Monday to Friday, to minimise any possible inconveniences on the road. Up to three passengers can be on a ride, whereas a safety driver will be in the vehicle to respond to any emergencies. The Group plans to operate an initial demonstration service for internally selected personnel, and then expand the pilot service targets to general customers in the future.

To commemorate the pilot service, Won Hee-ryong, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of South Korea, and Oh Se-hoon, Mayor of Seoul City, became the first customers to test drive the RoboRide vehicle.

Motional and Hyundai Motor Group debuted the IONIQ 5 robotaxis

Motional, a developer of driverless technology, and the Hyundai Motor Group have unveil a joint effort, the IONIQ 5 robotaxi merging both electrification and autonomy.

It also represents how these technologies will be seen in specific applications as a way to general public acceptance.

The vehicle operates at Level 4, the second highest level of autonomy. This means the car can perform all driving tasks, But only in predefined boundaries. These location-restricted trips are in areas that are deemed suitable and typically have a detailed graphical description of all the road conditions.

The IONIQ 5 robotaxi features a technology-driven design. The vehicle’s sensor suite is prominently displayed across the exterior, easily distinguishing the robotaxi from human-piloted vehicles.

The robotaxi has more than 30 sensors – a combination of cameras, radars, and lidar – that provide 360-degree perception, high-resolution images, and ultra-long range detection of objects.

The robotaxi will be outfitted with Motional’s driverless technology, which includes advanced machine learning systems that enables the vehicle to safely navigate challenging and complex driving situations.

Motional have already tested a robotaxi service covering left-hand and right-hand drive situations, harsh sun and heavy rain, highways and city streets, and controlled and uncontrolled intersections.

The IONIQ 5 robotaxi is built on the Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP, for ultra-fast charging and long-range driving, enabling the maximum utilisation of Motional’s robotaxi fleet. The IONIQ 5 robotaxi also comes with the Group’s advanced safety and reliability, and is globally scalable, uniquely positioning the robotaxi for cost-effective commercialisation.

“Hyundai Motor has evolved its IONIQ 5, a battery-electric vehicle built on its EV-dedicated platform, into a platform for fully autonomous vehicles,” said Woongjun Jang, Head of the Autonomous Driving Center at Hyundai Motor Group. “For the IONIQ 5-based robotaxi, we have applied various redundancy systems, in addition to a suite of essential technologies to ensure safety and convenience of the passengers.”

Motional and Hyundai Motor Group debuted the IONIQ 5 robotaxis for the first time publicly at IAA Mobility in Munich, September 7-12.

Ioniq 5 – Creating an electric vehicle from the ground up

Later this year Hyundai will be launching in Australia their latest Ioniq 5 all electric vehicle, the first Hyundai built on a new dedicated E-GMP battery electric vehicle platform.

Many current electric vehicles are based on a current platform designed to accommodate an internal combustion engine.

The low, squarish look has a hint of some of the hot hatches of the past. Apparently, this was Hyundai’s intent as their General Manager of Communication Bill Thomas says:

The designers use the cues from the original Poni concept Hyundai Pony from many decades ago. And that car was actually styled by an Italian design master called Jaro. And the cues for the design of the Ionic Five can be directly linked to Jarrah’s Pony concept. And I think that was in the 70s. So it’s interesting in that it’s kind of retro in its shape and some have compared it with the Landseer Delta integrally.

But then the really interesting thing about this car is that it’s big.
