Kia EV9 – Everything you need to know

Kia EV9 – Kia has released the all new EV9 SUV. This is a seven seat all electric SUV that is sure to make many premium brands look over their shoulder.

In short, its simply stunning.

The EV9 comes in two versions immediately, the entry level Air priced from $97,000 and the top spec GT-Line, priced at $121,000. These are all plus the usual costs.

Its big with an overall length of a bit over 5.0 metres and yet looks smaller. It’s a box on wheels yet looks stunning. Inside its cavernous with ample room for seven.

The EV9 is engaging to drive with substantial performance and the suspension tuning for Australian conditions is spot on. It feels firmly planted to the road and the hefty 2600kg weight helps. Given that weight, the 0-100km/h time for the AWD GT-Line of 5.3 seconds is impressive.

You expect electric cars to be quiet. But not this quiet. There is almost no exterior road or traffic noise that invades the cabin.

Kia has excelled with the EV9. It has a level of intelligent convenience that cars twice its price aspire to.

This is a Motoring Minute

What does Kia EV9 look like?

Like a box on wheels.

Big yet stylish.

Sleek yet long.

It has a most unusual design.

Kia have excelled.

Like the EV6, the EV9 has benefitted from a blank sheet of paper design parameters.

I’m sure it will polarise people, but I liked it. Somehow Kia have managed to make a 5.0m plus design look a metre smaller.

I particularly liked the Ocean Blue matte colour on the GT-Line.

I can rabbit on here but the best thing for readers is to simply look at the photos.

What about inside the EV9?

The immediate impression is space. Its cavernous.

The next impression is how well laid out everything is.

Seats in both models are particularly comfortable.

In front of the driver is an unusually designed steering wheel with a flattened top and bottom and it works. The familiar controls can be found on the spokes. Note that the drive mode selection is on the lower portion of the steering wheel. (it took me a little while to notice that)

The wheel also frames the digital driver instrument panel almost perfectly.

To the left is a huge central digital touch screen. Clarity is excellent.

One interesting design feature on the GT Line, is the control buttons that are integrated into the dash. Minimalist and functional. However, they can be inadvertently touched when you are resting your wrist there to use the touch screen. That’s learned behavior to avoid for an owner.

The central screen comes with a multitude of functionality and configurability. Some may say too much choice. It may take owners a little while to become familiar with the functionality and make the most of it.

For me the arm rests on the door and central storage bin are the perfect height. This is perhaps one of the most comfortable cars I’ve sat in.

Seating

Both Air and GT Line models have comfortable seats.

Mid row seats have an abundance of room and I sat back there is absolute comfort.

Third row seats looks spacious for the class. Even though the Kia product manager Roland Rivero kept encouraging me to slide my bear like frame back there I politely declined.

Access to the third row is by tilting the second row and ‘walk in’. This can apparently be done without removing a child seat.

The completely flat floorplan allows for maximum leg and foot room in all seats.

The GT Line is available with some seating options I believe. More details about those can be FOUND HERE

Some quick thoughts

There are practical USB inputs on the front lower dash area. However, there is a gap to anywhere a device can be rested so there will be a chord traversing that and will ruin the minimalist feel.

Central storage areas are huge. Large central bin with lift up lid, dual bin area and a big tray below.

The top portion houses the charging tray for smart phones. Some manufacturers are moving towards a slot style charging area and I like that.

In front of the central bin is a multi-use tray, for cups, other gear and has a slide cover. Its clever use of space.

Also clever is the steering mounted transmission controls. Tucked out of the way so they can’t be mistaken, but functional.

The digital rear view mirrors on the GT-Line take a little while to become accustomed to them. The mirrors on the AIR are conventional and quite large.

All EV9 models have a fingerprint reader that can be linked to your profile and prevent starting if not used.

Front seats have mesh style headrests. They are soft, cooling, and different in a clever way.

Kia has extensive use of recycled materials yet manages to make them look normal. More details about Kia commitment to recycling can be FOUND HERE

What about the motor and drivetrain.

The EV9 features a broad choice of electric powertrain configurations based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and utilizing Kia’s fourth-generation battery technology.

All models come with a one speed reduction gear Automatic transmission.

The Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) Air single motor model comes with a 76.1-kWh battery. This provides a claimed 160kW of power and 350 Nm of torque.

WLTP range is 443km. Top speed is 190km/h and 0-100km/h is claimed at 8.2 seconds.

Both All Wheel Drive (AWD) dual motor models the Earth and GT Line come with 99.8-kWh battery. This provides a claimed 283kW of power and 700 Nm of torque.

WLTP range for the Earth is 512km and the GT-Line is 505km.

Top speed is 200km/h and 0-100km/h is a claimed 5.3 seconds for the GT-Line and 6.0 seconds for the Earth model.

What is the EV9 like to drive.

First up this is a big and heavy SUV. It’s a touch over 5 metres in length and some 2600kg in weight for the GT-Line model. It sits firm on the road.

Second thing to note is the extensive localised suspension tuning that Kia undertook on the EV9. Their suspension Guru, Graeme Gambold is a genius when it comes to fine tuning local vehicles, and it shows.

Drive program

The launch program took in a mix of urban traffic chaos, motorway driving and twisty mountain roads. All up a great showcase for the vehicle.

We drove from Sydney Airport, down south over the Sea Cliff bridge along the Grand Pacific Drive. From there we headed toward Gerringong on the south Coast for lunch at a seaside location with a stunning ocean vista.

From there we took the back road to Jamberoo, up to the famous Pie stop at Robertson and on to Bowral. Here the Air models needed a top up for the trip home, but the GT-Line vehicles still had 240km of range left.

Its fair to say the vehicles were driven enthusiastically buy the attending journalists.

Air EV9

The rear-wheel-drive version is a touch lighter than the GT-Line and we had that for the twisty road sections.

It was responsive, soaked up the bumps and powerful enough to climb the mountain roads with ease. I would have thought that the 160Kw/350Nm would struggle with the 2400kg weight, but it seemed to do just fine.

However enthusiastic driving comes at the expense of range, as it does in a petrol engine.

EV9 GT-Line

As good as the RWD version is, the AWD GT-Line is a lot better.

Its difficult to believe this SUV is as hefty as it is and its ride, handling and dynamics are equal to several highly priced premium SUVs.

EV9 is fast, directly responsive to driver inputs and has excellent driver engagement.

Its weight helps to keep the EV9 firmly planted to the road.

Did I mention how quiet it is.

That is both a blessing and a disappointment. While its engaging to drive I really miss the sound of a burbling exhaust note.

Overall driving impressions

I loved it. For such a big SUV its surprisingly nimble and responsive.

One thing that absolutely stood out is how whisper quiet it is inside. There is imperceptible road, wind or driving noise intrusion.

This is reinforced when you, for some inexplicable reason, decide to wind down the windows when driving along and your senses are immediately assaulted.

Speaking of windows, we drove into the M5 tunnel with the window down a touch (not me driving) and the A/C on fresh. As soon as we hit the tunnel the window wound up and the A/C changed to recirculation.

We exited the tunnel and the window and A/C returned to how they were before. That’s intelligent convenience.

Kia EV9 final thoughts

My first impression is that the Kia EV9 is stunning.

Stunning in styling, practicality, interior ambience, and intelligent convenience.

Here is a vehicle that is pushing boundaries everywhere.

The onset of EV technology is levelling the playing field for brands.

Kia has just taken a giant leap forward and many premium brands should be worried.

When you consider the price of $121,000 plus the usual costs for the GT-Line, it could be considered an absolute bargain.

Fifteen influencers from more than ten countries will also attend the event as guests of Kia and will create engaging content from AO24 as they drive through the city of Melbourne in EV9 models.

In addition to reiterating the brand’s commitment to electrification, the AO24 brand initiatives were designed to highlight Kia’s continued support for the sport of tennis and pay tribute to Rafael Nadal, who unfortunately had to withdraw from AO24 due to injury. This includes a series of videos inspired by Kia’s ‘Movement That Inspires’ ethos. ‘Dear Tennis,’ and ‘Dear Rafa’ are based upon the theme of exchanging letters.

Infinitev, an emerging leader in the electric vehicle battery sector, has partnered with Kia Australia, a progressive brand in the local automotive market, to transform the landscape of electric vehicle (EV) battery reuse, repurpose, and recycling solutions.

With the rapid growth of the electric vehicle industry, the demand for battery technology is soaring. Recognising the immense potential in eco-friendly battery solutions, Infinitev and Kia Australia have joined forces to address the critical challenges associated with the entire lifecycle of EV batteries.

This groundbreaking partnership aims to leverage Infinitev’s cutting-edge expertise in sustainable technology and Kia’s renowned position as a global mobility solutions provider, to develop sustainable and scalable solutions for EV battery management. Together, the two companies will set new standards of excellence and reshape the future of electric vehicle sustainability.

Dickson Leow, General Manager of Infinitev, expressed his enthusiasm for the battery reuse and repurpose program, “We are proud to have a holistic solution that addresses the environmental concerns associated with electric vehicle batteries. Our innovative reuse approach ensures that the transition to a circular economy is not only sustainable but also reduces waste and preserves valuable resources. Through responsible battery management, we can accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and build a greener Australia.”

Infinitev cutting-edge R&D

Leveraging cutting-edge R&D and with more than four decades of expertise in automotive electronics re-engineering, Infinitev has developed a comprehensive suite of battery lifecycle management solutions. When a traction battery experiences diminished functionality within a vehicle, Infinitev initiates a rigorous protocol starting with a SafetyCheck—a meticulous examination encompassing both a physical and electrochemical safety assessments of EV batteries.

Following the SafetyCheck, Infinitev’s skilled engineers employ their proprietary HealthCheck diagnostic tools to conduct thorough performance evaluations of the battery pack and its individual modules. This comprehensive assessment yields a precise characterisation, placing the modules into one of three distinct categories:

A grade modules are reused to build batteries for EV traction

B grade modules are repurposed for battery energy storage systems

C grade modules are recycled by Infinitev’s partners to recover valuable materials

Damien Meredith, Chief Executive Officer at Kia Australia said, “We are currently in the very early stages of developing a solution tailored to Kia customers that will allow their electric vehicle batteries to be refurbished instead of discarded.”

“What happens to an electric vehicle battery at the end of its life is an important consideration when it comes to EV buyers, so this is a very significant program.”

Kia EV Lineup

Kia Australia’s lineup of electric vehicles started with the introduction of the first-generation Niro in 2021. Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid variants of the large SUV Sorento followed along with the second-generation Niro, all adapted from platforms initially designed for internal combustion engine models.

Kia’s journey towards becoming a truly sustainable mobility solutions leader really hit the mark with the introduction of its first vehicle built on a dedicated Electric Global Modular (E-GMP), the award-winning Kia EV6.

The EV6 will soon be joined by Kia’s new electric Upper Large SUV, the Kia EV9, both offering a holistic strategy for mitigating the environmental impact of a car, from design through to end-of-life disposal.

This collaboration between Infinitev and Kia Australia marks a significant milestone in the quest for sustainable transportation. By combining their strengths, these two industry trailblazers will pave the way for a cleaner, greener future, revolutionising the way electric vehicle batteries are utilised, repurposed, and recycled.

But at a recent EV expo in Korea, Kia revealed plans for more models, the EV3, EV4 and EV5.

The EV3 concept is a compact SUV that is ideal for inner city urban streets.

EV4 brings an unusual design to electric sedans which redefines what is possible is style.

And the EV5 is a mid-sized SUV designed for millennial families.

Al of these embrace sustainable production techniques and extensive use of recycled materials.

By using sustainably grown products like Mycelium and Hemp Kia is doing more for the environment on a broad scale. Details matter, such as having the carpets made from 100% recycled PET or even a portion from recycle fishing nets.

Kia is demonstrating its commitment to minimize its impact on the environment when producing vehicles with the introduction of 10 must-have sustainable items for all new Kia model lines.

Dare I say it, the future looks electric at Kia

Kia sustainable mobility solutions

“As a sustainable mobility solutions provider, Kia’s transition to electric vehicles is a must, not an option. By developing advanced EV technology, bold design, and intuitive services, and applying them to our entire EV line-up, our ultimate aim is to provide Kia’s unique value to as many people as possible. This includes the stages of pre-purchase, purchase and post-purchase,” Charles Ryu, Head of Brand and Customer Experience Division, said.

“We will continue to fulfill the needs of our customers through new digital platforms and technologies so that we can keep finding better ways to move forward.
The brand’s goal is to achieve an annual sales target of one million electric vehicles by 2026 and increase it to 1.6 million units per year by 2030, driven by the products and initiatives revealed today.

Kia’s EV strategy: Expanding EV line-up and charging infrastructure to make EVs more accessible to customers

Kia announced its plan to develop a wide-ranging EV line-up priced from $30,000 to $80,000, featuring existing models such as the EV6 and EV9, as well as future offerings tailored for the popular B- and C-segments. The brand aims to introduce smaller EVs like the EV5, EV4, and EV3, with prices ranging from $35,000 to $50,000, to accelerate the widespread adoption of EVs.

In emerging markets with slower EV adoption rates, the initial launch will focus on the EV6 and EV9, with subsequent releases of strategic models including the EV5, EV4, and EV3. This approach aims to diversify product offerings and cater to various customer preferences.

Efforts are underway to establish a reliable system for EV production and battery supply, with the brand’s goal of expanding its global EV production facilities to a total of eight by 2025. These facilities will encompass research, development, production, and supply, with Korea serving as the central hub. In Europe, it will focus on the production of small and medium-sized EVs, while in China, the emphasis will be on mid to large-sized EVs. Strategically designed EV models tailored for emerging markets will be produced in India. Kia also plans to introduce a diverse range of EV models in North America, in response to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

Furthermore, the brand is actively establishing battery joint ventures to ensure a stable global battery supply system in sync with its global EV production network.

Kia EV model line-up:

A rapidly expanding comprehensive range of models to meet diverse customer needs

Each EV model plays a key strategic role in accelerating the EV transition by expanding the appeal and democratization of EV models to an ever-broadening customer demographic.

While each model is created uniquely to meet specific and diverse customer needs, they share common elements such as the brand’s cutting-edge electric platform technology, the innovative ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, and the brand’s sustainable color, material, and finish (CMF) strategy. The latter entails incorporating sustainability at scale through action, such as using ten must-have sustainable items in the construction of each model, including bio plastic, bio paint and recycled PET or fishing net carpet.

The Kia EV5 SUV:

Designed and engineered to meet the needs and desires of millennial families

The Kia EV5, the third dedicated BEV in its line-up, is built on the brand’s dedicated EV platform, E-GMP. It introduces a new era of electric mobility and distinctive SUV design. Featuring a form shaped by the brand’s unique design philosophy ‘Opposites United’, it combines exceptional versatility and outstanding comfort with advanced technology, dynamic performance, and pioneering safety to deliver a harmoniously balanced vehicle.

The EV5 features an interior that completely reimagines the vehicle’s interior space. Drawing additional inspiration from the recently launched larger EV9 SUV, it offers an extensive interior space that is closer in concept and execution to a home lounge than a traditional car cabin.

Electric Powertrain and Driving Experience

The EV5 will be offered the company’s dedicated EV platform, E-GMP, providing a solid foundation for the vehicle’s performance and contributing to its excellent overall driving dynamics.

Production of the EV5 will take place in both China and Korea, and the Chinese market will have access to three variations: standard, long-range, and long-range AWD.

The standard model, equipped with a 64kWh battery pack and a 160kW motor, is expected to have a driving range of 530km per charge according to the Combined Charging and Load Cycle (CLTC) standards. The long-range model, featuring an 88kWh battery and the same 160kW motor, aims to achieve a range of 720km per charge.

The long-range AWD model will feature an 88kWh battery pack and a combined output of 230kW, with a front-wheel 160kW motor and a rear-wheel 70kW motor. With AWD model, Kia is targeting a driving range of 650km based on the CLTC standards. Additionally, the model offers fast-charging capability, allowing the battery to be charged from 30% to 80% capacity in just 27 minutes.

For Korea, all variants of the EV5 models, including standard, long-range, and long-range AWD versions, are in development, with potential adjustments being considered. The standard model will have a 58kWh battery and a 160kW front motor. The long-range model will feature an 81kWh battery and the same 160kW front motor. The long-range AWD model will include an extra 70kW rear motor, resulting in a combined power output of up to 225kW. The driving range of each model will be tailored to meet market demands.

EV5 battery functions in all weather conditions

The EV5 battery has been engineered to function effectively throughout all four seasons, even in extreme hot and cold weather. An advanced heat pump system, an already popular feature of the EV6, has been incorporated into the EV5 to manage the battery’s temperature, ensuring consistent performance regardless of external conditions.

It will offer regenerative braking system and an i-Pedal system that allows drivers to both slow down and accelerate using a single pedal, thereby minimizing fatigue, and enhancing the comfort of driving.

“The EV market is expanding from one catering to the smaller early-adopter group to a more broader mass majority of customers. As a leader in the great EV transition, we have quickly expanded our EV line-up beyond the EV6 and EV9 to include a variety of small- and medium-sized models such as the EV5. Our competitive, growing EV line-up will accelerate the popularization of electric vehicles and provide consumers with more options from which to choose,” Spencer Cho, Head of Global Business Planning Sub-Division, said.

“The Kia EV5 is not just the next addition to our rapidly expanding EV line-up, but also the embodiment of how we will accelerate the EV revolution. For us, it is the perfect representation of both our future EV strategy and our commitment to accelerating the worldwide transition to EVs.”

The EV5 will also be available in a GT, offer further performance features and engaged driving experience. More information regarding the EV5 GT trim will be revealed later.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The EV5’s spacious, light, well-ventilated cabin is equipped with cutting-edge infotainment and connectivity technology that enhances efficiency and convenience on every journey while enabling occupants to remain safely engaged with the digital world as they travel.

It is equipped with the connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) infotainment system and supports over-the-air software updates. It incorporates a Panoramic Wide Display, which combines a 12.3-inch cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment system, along with a 5-inch climate control display. These features provide the driver with comprehensive information and content for a convenient and immersive driving experience.

The brand’s new Unified Graphical User Interface (GUI) is applied between the audio-visual, navigation, and telematics (AVNT) screens, and the CDU ensures enhanced information display consistency. Simple-to-navigate menus provide improved usability of EV-specific functions and enable drivers to monitor aspects such as range and EV charging at a glance. The seamless flow of information is further augmented by an optional windshield HUD (Head Up Display).

Throughout the cabin, physical buttons are kept to a minimum. Beneath the central AVNT screen, four hidden hard keys provide a start/stop function along with AVNT and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control; previously, these systems would have required 17 buttons to control.

The three-zone climate control system enables individual control for the driver, front passenger, and second-row occupants, while an after-blow feature reduces air conditioner odors, ensuring a pleasant cabin environment for all occupants.

Customers can keep their EV5 constantly updated by upgrading the SUV’s digital features and services without any need to take the vehicle to a dealership. Beyond the standard features, the Kia Connect Store offers a wide array of options to add to the vehicle’s performance and enjoyment of the user experience.

Safety and Convenience Features

The EV5 is equipped with seven airbags in total. In addition to the state-of-the-art seatbelt technology, its structure is engineered for optimum strength. Naturally, it is offered with the brand’s latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and a range of active safety.

The model comes with Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA2), which helps drivers maintain distance, stay centered in the lane, change lanes, and adjust lateral positioning.

With a simple touch of the Kia Digital Key 2 smart key, customers can activate the vehicle’s Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2) system. This technology enables the SUV to park itself without the need for driver intervention, whether in or out of the vehicle. Also, the smart exit function and a remote forward and reverse function provides drivers with added peace of mind when navigating tight parking spaces. These features contribute to a more relaxed and enjoyable driving and parking experience.

Using ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles, the RSPA 2 automatically maneuvers the vehicle into the designated parking space, controlling the accelerator, brakes, and gearshift. The system also automatically applies the brakes if an object representing an obstruction is detected in its path. It also features Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) to prevent collisions with oncoming vehicles when reversing.

Efforts are being made to enhance energy utilization in the EV5 by incorporating Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functions. With V2L, the high-voltage battery can supply power to external electronic devices. Kia will concentrate on rolling out V2G in regions where the necessary infrastructure exists, enabling surplus battery energy to be shared with the grid.

Multiple seating configurations

The EV5 is available with a choice of seats featuring eco-friendly recycled PET fabric and Bio-PU leather coverings. This innovative approach elevates the EV5’s spacious cabin from somewhere for occupants to sit while travelling, into an ultra-comfortable, highly practical, and inspiring environment that meets the needs of millennial families and ensures an enjoyable experience every time they enter the vehicle.

At the front of the vehicle, bench-type seats (Chinese market only), combined with mood lighting, provide a comfortable space for occupants. The center console armrest also incorporates a table and storage, adding to the vehicle’s usability.

The reclining seats are designed to prevent back and spine discomfort with their continuously adjustable back angle. Relaxation seats feature a four-mode massage function with three levels of intensity, enabling occupants to choose their individual sweet-spot setting during charging, leaving them feeling fully refreshed when they resume their journey. Comfort seats provide exceptional levels of enhanced wellbeing, thanks to six massage air cells, four-way lumbar support, a three-step heater and ventilation function and a footrest. The model’s safety seats, equipped with three airbags and a four-way adjustable headrest, provide optimum occupant protection.

Kia Bedroom on wheels

On reaching their destination, families can effectively transform the rear of the vehicle into a bedroom thanks to the 0-degree, full-flat folding second-row camping seat. They can enjoy pre-purchased food stored in the rear console refrigerator/warmer. The unit provides food warming and beverage cooling functions with a temperature range of 5 to 55 degrees Celsius and a 4.0-liter capacity. It can be used in numerous ways, such as keeping takeout breakfast warm during commutes, heating beverages like tea and coffee, and storing ice-cold drinks and water during summer camping trips.

Naturally, the EV5’s interior designers have also thought of a feature to enable occupants to enjoy their food, whether they choose to dine alfresco or in-cabin. It takes the form of the highly versatile Multi Table luggage board, which can instantly be transformed into a table.

The Kia Concept EV3:

Providing the technology, practicality and design of the flagship SUV in a compact form

The Concept EV3 represents the brand’s vision for an electric compact CUV that effortlessly blends practicality with the sheer joy of driving. It offers users the technology, practicality and design of Kia’s flagship SUV, the EV9, in a compact and accessible form. While those qualities might seem incompatible to some, delivering creative, groundbreaking design solutions by fusing seemingly contrasting sources lies at the heart of Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy. And in the case of the Concept EV3, Kia’s designers have drawn a high degree of inspiration from the ‘Joy for Reason’ pillar of the design philosophy.

“Joy can be seen as the antithesis of reason. One is a positive, emotional response, and the other is derived from logic. When the two are combined, though, their contrasting qualities merge into a powerful and highly impactful design,” Karim Habib, Executive Vice President, and Head of Kia Global Design Center, said.

“With the Concept EV3, the ‘Joy for Reason’ influence is evident in the contrasting qualities of a robust body combined with a dynamic silhouette. In addition, the unexpected treatment of volumes and graphics simultaneously interlock with each other, creating a logical yet emotional design.”

Concept EV3 interior

The design treatment of the cabin, with the windscreen pushed forward and the long sloping roofline, creates a unique silhouette. The robust architecture of the squared wheel arches, cut with asymmetrical angles, results in an unexpected logic and a strong impression. This, in turn, is contrasted by the wrap-around windscreen and disconnected C pillar, which link the glasshouse surfaces and give the roof a floating effect.

Inside, the Concept EV3 blends exceptional practicality with transformative cabin ambience and design. As with the vehicles’ exterior, the ‘Joy for Reason’ pillar plays a fundamental influencing role, merging seemingly opposing values to execute a precise product design language, resulting in a cabin that feels joyful to travel in, while providing ample space to support an active lifestyle once occupants reach their destination.

Its cabin also provides an environment that promotes emotional wellbeing. Enhanced by soft mood lighting, the compelling, ultra-clean shape and surface of the dashboard, crafted through exquisitely refined character lines, creates an expansive visual sense to offer up the possibility of boundless opportunities on every journey.

Advanced ergonomic seat design and environmentally friendly materials, in keeping with the brand’s ethos of achieving sustainability at scale, combine with mini tables that rotate in length, position, and angle. In conjunction with the movement of the seats, the tables support four customer experience-enhancing modes – Focus, Social, Refreshing and Storage. The folding bench-type rear seat is equally flexible and can be effortlessly folded upward, allowing for storing bulky luggage such as electric scooters and bicycles.

The Kia Concept EV4:

Redefining the essence of the EV sedan

The Concept EV4 represents the purity of the ‘Power to Progress’ pillar of the ‘Opposites Untied’ design philosophy. ‘Power to Progress’ focuses on the skills, expertise and creativity developed during Kia’s recent era of design-led transformation. This approach fuels the creation of innovative products that transcend the establishment of new standards for individual vehicle design to redefine entire sectors. Such is the case with the Concept EV4.

Its four-door format might suggest it should be categorized as a sedan. However, the model’s potent and impactful lines represent not just another sedan, but an entirely new type of EV sedan that stands as a symbol of innovation.

Inspired by the ‘Power of Progress’ and manifested through a harmonious fusion of confident, geometric diagonal character lines and rich yet technical surfaces, the Concept EV4 represents a new value, approach, customer experience, and typology. Aspects such as the evocative sleek low nose, the elongated, dynamic long-tail silhouette, and the technical roof spoiler, all attributes reminiscent of sports and racing cars, affirm the EV4’s status as an entirely new type of EV sedan.

An aggressive facial impression complements the Concept EV4’s progressive, technological silhouette. Featuring a wide, imposing stance, with headlamps located vertically at the extreme outer edges of the hood and front bumper, the model further symbolizes the brand’s determination to push boundaries and accelerate the EV Revolution.

Concept EV4 interior

The interior features a sleek and spacious horizontal layout, incorporating stylish design elements that prioritize the driver’s experience without obstructing their view.

To achieve this, Kia designers have placed an air conditioning control panel that can be neatly stored in the center console when not in use and applied pin-style air vents that offer the flexibility to change patterns, among other refinements to the interior design.

The cocoon-like ambience of the cabin enables the driver to engage with the vehicle in a new and unobtrusive way. Presented via twin digital screens, a slimmed-down instrument panel delivers subtle levels of driver orientation, helping clear the mind from distractions and prepare for upcoming tasks.

The Concept EV4 comes with a new ‘Mind Modes’ feature that adjusts ambient lighting and animated ventilation patterns. In ‘Perform’ mode, the driver is presented with all the information they require to perform at their optimum and get the most out of their day. In contrast, ‘Serenity’ mode offers a range of digital graphics to create a more relaxed ambience for reflection and restoration.

Expanding charging infrastructure

Looking to help address the ongoing challenge of reliable and available charging infrastructure, the brand is actively expanding global charging networks. In North America, Kia has announced its decision to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for their EVs starting from the fourth quarter of 2024. This move will grant Kia customers access to approximately 12,000 Tesla Superchargers.

As part of a coalition of six OEM groups, Kia is working to build 30,000 fast-charging stations across North America by 2030 to address charging accessibility concerns. In Europe, it has collaborated with four OEM groups to create IONITY, installing 2,800 fast-charging stations along key highways. The aim is to have a total of 7,000 operational stations by 2025, providing efficient charging options for the brand’s EV owners.

Kia’s new EV experience: Elevating the customer journey to the next level

To accelerate the EV revolution and provide a diverse and comprehensive offer to all its customers, the brand will leverage all aspects of the customer journey, thus ensuring the adoption of EVs is as convenient and effortless as possible. This strategy involves optimizing every single customer touchpoint, from pre-purchase to ownership experience.

In the first half of 2024, the ‘Kia App’ is scheduled for release, with the aim of offering customers with a comprehensive and hassle-free experience, from vehicle research and test drives to contract finalization.

The app will include an AI chatbot to help customers with their questions and provide quick responses. It will also offer insurance premium discounts linked to insurance products. The standout feature of the app is the ‘E-routing’ function, which uses the current battery status of the vehicle to suggest the best route, considering charging stations. The app’s home screen will display location-based information, like nearby restaurants, to improve the user experience. Customers can conveniently manage the charging port and monitor real-time charging status on the home screen using the ‘Handle Layer’ feature in the app.

Kia reality experiences

Kia also aims to enhance offline customer experiences to highlight the advantages of EV models, with existing efforts like the ‘Digital City Store’ and ‘EV Unplugged Ground’ in Korea, as well as the ‘City Store’ located outside Korea. Future plans to establish exclusive EV stores in the United States, Europe, China, and India.

Harnessing virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) technologies, the aim is to provide immersive experiences that motivate customers to engage more deeply with the products. Efforts will also focus on improving the customer service capabilities of global sales representatives in the EV sector and introducing product specialists tailored to specific regions, enabling personalized consultations and test drives aligned with each area’s unique characteristics.

Kia is set to embrace generative AI technology to revolutionize the in-vehicle experience, including partnering with top generative AI model providers to roll out innovative services. This will allow customers to access a wide range of services like schedule management, electric vehicle route optimization, travel planning, entertainment, and emergency support by simply engaging in conversations with the generative AI assistant.

Generative AI technology will debut in the 2024 EV3 model, with subsequent integration into the EV4 and EV5, and continuous enhancements via over-the-air updates.

Future EV Days

Going forward, Kia will continue to showcase new electric models, concepts, and groundbreaking technologies at EV Day each year and leverage the event as a platform for the brand to present its progressive EV strategy and vision for future mobility.

※ Product specifications and availability may vary depending on the region and country.

Ten must-have sustainability items applied to all new Kia production models

Initiatives reinforce Kia’s strategic commitment to reduce short-term carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality across its operations by 2045

EV3 AND EV4 Concept details

Kia has unveiled further details of the interiors of the EV3 and EV4 concept vehicles and the game-changing eco-friendly materials and methodologies used to create them, which will play an essential role in the brand’s transition to a sustainable mobility solutions provider.

When creating the interior of the Kia Concept EV3, Kia’s CMF (Color, Materials, Finish) design team took inspiration from the element of Air with optimum use of light and transparency throughout the cabin. As with the Kia Concept EV4, the Kia CMF team also utilized an array of innovative sustainable materials that reduce the vehicles’ environmental impact, provide greater design freedom, and afford unprecedented levels of colour choice and trim finish.

For the Concept EV3, the Kia CMF team deployed natural – as opposed to carbon–fibre structures to deliver a lightweight, slimmer seat design. The exceptionally strong, sustainable fibre weave enables more elegant, modern aesthetics, complemented by soothing natural tones. For the seat covers, the CMF team applied 3D Knit technology. This process not only results in a visually stunning 3D effect with an exceptionally soft surface but also delivers class-leading efficiency with reduced stitching and joins, plus zero waste material.

Kia EV – Game-changing sustainable materials inspired by nature

The material Kia chose for the inside of the Concept EV3’s console table was not manufactured – it was grown, as Marília Biill, Head of CMF Design at Kia, explains. “Mycelium, which comes from mushroom roots, combines excellent strength with an extremely soft surface. Developing grown materials, a process referred to as bio fabrication, is a major goal for Kia.

“Using Mycelium enables us to mimic the processes we see in nature and leverage it to design more sustainable solutions – the material can be grown in any shape you want using a mold. The use of Mycelium is still at a very early stage, and, as part of Kia’s Sustainability Strategy, we are working with partners to accelerate development of the material. One day, by growing our own materials, we’ll be able to simplify processes, adapt forms and most importantly, be closer to nature in its essence.”

For creating the Concept EV4’s cabin, the Kia CMF team took inspiration from the element Earth. By applying natural dyes to 100 per cent recycled cotton, using madder roots and walnut shells, the team can take advantage of a near-endless range of tonalities and hues, courtesy of nature.

Concept EV4 cabin ambience

Determined to give the Concept EV4 cabin an ambience of sheer uniqueness and exceptional quality, Kia wove fabric stripes by hand and applied them to the car’s storage area and dashboard. This handcrafted approach creates a 3D effect as stunning and as beautiful in execution as the 3D Knit finish used in the Concept EV3 seat covers.

To elevate the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the Concept EV4’s console table, Kia’s CMF designers turned to hemp fibers. “Hemp is a rapidly growing plant that requires minimal resources to cultivate,” explains Marília Biill. “Not only is it highly sustainable, but it’s also highly moldable too, which means it is a very versatile material to work with, plus it enhances the EV concept’s cabin with its beautiful rich color.”

Making the difference today with 10 must-have sustainable items

While many of the materials and methodologies utilized in the EV3 and EV4 concept vehicles showcase solutions Kia is investigating to implement at scale in the future, the brand has a long history of integrating sustainable materials into its products, starting with the use of bioplastic and sugar cane bio fibre in the 2014 Soul EV.

Earlier this year, with the launch of the EV9 flagship electric SUV in March, Kia further escalated its commitment to minimize its impact on the environment when producing vehicles with the introduction of 10 must-have sustainable items for all new Kia model lines.

Kia’s 10 must-have sustainable items include bioplastic. Produced from biomass sources such as vegetable oils, corn extract, sawdust and sugarcane, bioplastic is used in vehicle components such as dashboards, consoles, pillars, and trim. Kia identified Bio Polyurethane (PU) as an optimal leather replacement, as the material incorporates plant-based components and provides exemplary support, cushioning, and durability. Vehicle carpets can be created from 100 per cent recycled PET, and Kia offers the option of a proportion of this material being sourced from recycled fishing nets.

Kia EV9 Suspension tune

Kia Australia has released details about the EV9’s local ride and handling tune ahead of its arrival into dealer showrooms in October. The all-electric Kia EV9 will become Kia’s flagship model affirming the brand’s ongoing evolution while providing drivers with their first opportunity to purchase an Upper Large electric SUV in Australia.

The Kia EV9, the brand’s first three-row electric flagship SUV, which encapsulates bold styling and sophisticated elegance inside and out, represents a pivotal step forward in the company’s journey towards becoming a sustainable mobility solutions provider and has been created to deliver new standards of space, practicality, flexibility, comfort and technology.

“Kia is about to liven up both the Upper Large SUV segment and electric vehicle market, with the addition of the all-new and very unique, Kia EV9,” said Kia Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Damien Meredith.

“It’s big, full electric on a dedicated EV platform, provides seven seats, equipped with some really impressive technology and it’s locally tuned; there really isn’t an apples to apples competitor in the local new car market.

“As with the arrival of the EV6 range, consumer interest in the Kia EV9 has been extraordinary but thankfully, we will be receiving better supply of the EV9 and planning for 100 per month.”

Developed over a period of 44 months every facet of the EV9 has been pushed to the limits of durability at both Kia’s global Namyang R&D Center in Korea and most recently, locally on Australian roads.

During the global testing phase of the Kia EV9, it was relentlessly subjected to a gruelling verification program on a 4WD climbing hill and a rough terrain track, as well as a deep-water wading test, to ensure maximum reliability even in the most challenging conditions. Kia’s high-speed, handling, and low-friction tracks place every element of the EV9’s performance and roadholding under the strictest scrutiny.

Australia Ride and Handling

The Kia EV9 has now been put to the test with Kia Australia’s local ride and handling testing regimen ensuring its overall vehicle dynamics meet the expectations of Australian drivers, a new car buyer’s requirement established by the EV6 electric vehicle range and the majority of Kia’s internal combustion engine models before it.

“As the new halo product for the Kia brand, it was imperative that Kia Australia localised the EV9 to suit our roads and lifestyle,” said Roland Rivero, General Manager Product at Kia Australia.

“We went through our normal robust program which commenced in Korea followed by detailed damper and steering development on Aussie roads, while collaborating closely with our colleagues from Namyang, who actually came to Australia with our key suppliers to support us throughout the process.

“The EV9 delivers a refined and polished ride across the varying conditions the Australian terrain offers.”

Kia Australia’s Chief Ride and Handling Engineer, Graeme Gambold added, “Overall, we are very happy with how the EV9 drives. It is comfortable, confident and surprisingly nimble despite its dimensions and mass.”

“In line with the vehicle’s size and versatility, our local tuning program focused on marrying the unique demands of Australian road conditions with making the EV9 a very comfortable and effortless family cruiser.

“We aimed to make it capable not only in the urban jungle but, also enjoyable on a long drive and on challenging rougher roads. It does a great job absorbing bumps around town and soaks up the rough stuff at higher speeds on typical country roads, whilst maintaining good body control.

“This was also the first time we have worked with the combination of the E-GMP platform and self-levelling shock absorbers in the rear. The equipment all works in harmony for the EV9, keeping the vehicle level despite loads. This is important for this big and boxy 7-seater, ensuring front-end grip is maintained whether the EV9 has one driver, or a whole family plus cargo in the back.

“We are confident Australians will appreciate how the EV9 drives and how well it will cater to their lifestyle.”

Kia EV9 advanced features

As the new flagship model, the Kia EV9 will be the most advanced product in the range, introducing several firsts for Kia in Australia. This includes Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2), Kia’s next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) which functions only when driving on a freeway or motorway. HDA 2 fundamentally builds on adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, combining with Lane Following Assist (LFA) to keep the car centred in the lane even when driving through a curve.

It adds a direct Hands-on Detection (HOD) sensor to the torque sensor recognition method to further enhance the recognition of the driver’s steering control, providing warnings and if necessary, deactivation of HDA 2. As well as staying centred in the lane, HDA 2 can add a degree of offset to improve spacing between a vehicle in the adjacent lane.

Additionally, HDA 2 includes Lane Change Assist (LCA) which when activated whilst holding the steering wheel and fully engaging the turn signal in the desired direction, will automatically steer to the respective lane.

The Kia EV9 will also introduce the next generation of Kia’s in-house developed infotainment and telematics system. Now termed Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), this upgraded platform is designed to offer more processing power running on a new chipset and an even more user-friendly interface with revised graphics.

Kia’s ccNC includes Over-the-Air (OTA) updates which enable the system to undergo constant “wireless” improvements, with the latest maps, interfaces and software enhancements, and all without customers having to visit a service centre.

Sustainability: setting new standards for responsible mobility

Kia’s strategic commitment to become a leader in sustainable mobility, and its declared roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, extend beyond the provision of zero-emission EV drivetrains. They also encompass the materials used in the vehicle’s construction, and the EV9 takes this to the next level, with eco-friendly materials applied to set new standards in sustainable mobility.

The Kia EV9 marks a pioneering milestone as the first model to embrace the brand’s three-step Design Sustainability Strategy, initiated to phase out the use of leather, apply ten ‘must-have’ sustainable items to all new Kia models and continuously increase the use of bio-based materials such as corn, sugar cane, and natural oils. Kia’s target is to increase the proportion of recycled plastics it uses to 20 per cent by 2030.

The EV9’s color palette draws inspiration from nature’s four core elements, namely light, air, earth, and water, to establish a connection with nature’s beauty and fuse it into the EV9’s design philosophy.

The EV9’s interior features a total of six different combinations, from a light modern grey to elegant natural tones and a more sporting version for the GT-Line.

EV9 Preview design

Kia Corporation has revealed full images of the exterior and interior design of the Kia EV9, its first three-row electric flagship SUV, which encapsulates bold styling and sophisticated elegance inside and out. The Kia EV9 represents a pivotal step forward in the company’s journey towards becoming a sustainable mobility solutions provider.

The bold and confident visual presence of the EV9 is inspired by Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, which harnesses the creative tension generated by the divergent values of nature and modernity to deliver a harmonious whole. Kia’s designers have fused a unique combination of sleek, sculptural shapes and assured, assertive geometry to deliver a strikingly contemporary yet gracefully serene SUV.

“The Kia EV9 breaks new ground, aiming to redefine standards for design, connectivity, usability and environmental responsibility,” said Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center. “The Kia EV9 offers customers an exceptionally high-quality proposition and a fresh EV perspective in the family SUV sector. This new vehicle typology provides instinctive experiences and excellent comfort for not just the driver, but all occupants, through innovative use of space, technology and design.”

Exterior design: paving new paths for future electric SUV design

Guided by the brand’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, Kia’s designers strive to create vehicles with unprecedented visual appeal. In particular, the ‘Bold for Nature’ pillar of the ideology, which inspires the combination of elements from the natural and material worlds, has played a key role in forming the exterior design of the EV9. The result is a vehicle that effortlessly combines an undoubted aura of rugged capability for all conditions, with the serene calmness of a sophisticated EV that paves new paths for future electric SUV design.

The front of the EV9 is denoted by simple clear-cut lines and body surfaces, which exude confidence, clarity and calmness in equal measure. Accentuated by the ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille’ and striking vertical headlamps, the EV9’s signature ‘Digital Tiger Face’ imparts a visionary and futuristic look and feel. The Digital Tiger Face features two clusters of small cube lamps within the bodywork adjacent to each headlamp. The EV9’s innovative ‘Star Map LED daytime running lights (DRL)’ creates a new illumination experience and delivers a sophisticated animated lighting pattern that will denote Kia’s Digital Tiger Face for the brand’s future EV models.

Formed from a polygonal design language, the side profile of the EV9 effortlessly combines a strong and indisputable SUV identity with exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. Dynamic triangular fender structures and highly pronounced geometric wheel arches combine with the fuselage body, unifying the polygonal elements into a cohesive structure that presents a determined look. Flush door handles and a tapered back roofline gives a sense of smooth and efficient motion.

At the rear of the vehicle, the simple, clean lines of the tailgate, which are elegantly detailed by the slim rear lights that mirror the design of those at the front, further reflect the EV9’s strong and confident stance.

Interior design: new social space with enhanced comfort and technology

The Kia ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy ‘Technology for Life’ pillar ensures that only technology and innovation that promote positive, intuitive interactions between humans and machines are created – realizing new possibilities for mobility. These values have played a pivotal role in the creation of the interior of the EV9. They have enabled Kia’s designers to prioritize space, comfort and technology for all passengers, reimagining what a family SUV can offer.

Built on Kia’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the EV9’s long wheelbase, low beltline, and completely flat electric vehicle architecture have facilitated the creation of generous space for all occupants to connect and relax with lounge-style comfort in all three rows of seats. Offered in both six and seven-seat formats, Kia captured feedback from families to evaluate seating configurations and features to ensure the EV9 delivers equality of space, comfort and experience for all occupants without placing all of its focus on the driver.

Occupants sitting in the first and second-row seats can simultaneously recline their seats to relax and rest when the EV9 is charging. The seats in the second row can be effortlessly swiveled 180 degrees so that occupants can interact with those sitting in the third row. The third-row seats also offer cup holders and charging points for mobile devices.

Spacious, light, airy cabin

Throughout the spacious, light, airy cabin, the EV9 embodies an elegantly simple, premium quality, exceptionally user-friendly design. The open, floating panoramic dashboard extends from the steering wheel to the vehicle’s centre. Two 12.3-inch touch screens integrated with one 5-inch segment display improve the digital experience, offering effortless control of the vehicle’s functions and ensuring physical buttons are kept to a minimum.

The centre console is equipped with ample storage options, including a spacious compartment located at its base. The centre console doors are further designed to add to the overall refinement of the interior space.

The EV9’s extended display high-definition audiovisual, navigation and telematics (AVNT) screen creates a rich and immersive experience. It enhances occupants’ ability to engage and interact with the digital world seamlessly. Beneath the AVNT screen, an array of hidden type touch buttons provides a start/stop function along with AVNT and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) control.
